Seriously, get a heavy sheath from a tailor and buy the bearded axe. It's pretty good in melee, but that's not the point. Target a guard, stand away from them a bit, get the axe out and then hold X. You full on throw a two-haned battleaxe at their head. The game got 10x more awesome for me when I accidentally did it to a guard charging me on horseback.

Axes with beards are the shit.

I also tried to do a big swing by holding X and did that by accident, pretty awesome.

I'm pretty sure you can throw all the melee weapons like that.

All heavy weapons can be thrown. Swords use the gun and the dagger throws dirt. Heavy weapons being big maces, swords and axes. "

Causally pushing a guard down after axing his face is still the best fucking thing.
