This is what I've been hearing a lot from impressions. First 6 hours are tutorial.

Boston doesn't open up until then, it's not fully built yet.

No hunting. No trading. No tree climbing.

Seems a bit long, Assassin's Creed 2 and onwards were slow but not to this extent.

#2 Posted by Village_Guy (2657 posts) -

That's... a lot.

Hopefully they justify it with good/plenty of story stuff.

it's a stupid game, made by stupid people FOR stupid people. in fact, the whole game should just be one long tutorial... or maybe include an autopilot feature where the game plays with itself. bloated, pretentious, indulgent pos

So you've played it, then?

#6 Posted by wemibelec90 (1806 posts) -

Hmm. You would think they wouldn't need to keep doing this, since EVERY game has done the exact same thing. It's part of why I could barely get through Revelations. Slogging through that boring beginning part again nearly put me to sleep.

#7 Posted by Tylea002 (2295 posts) -

That sounds like Revelations and Brotherhood to me. So long as it's enjoyable and awesome then it'll be alright.

#8 Posted by Zomgfruitbunnies (863 posts) -

Well, how many dudes do you get to stab in those six hours?

You don't get to stab anyone in the first 2 hours.

#10 Posted by HistoryInRust (6380 posts) -

All the Assassin's Creed games had painfully long tutorial sequences. I felt like I was getting introduced to new mechanics ten hours in in Revelations.

Every game developer operates under the delusion that people who ignored every game in their franchise up until this point are totally going to change their mind this time, so they always cater to new players, regardless of the last few games.

But surely there will be much face- and/or neck-stabbing in the next 4 hours then?!

#13 Posted by Mnemoidian (956 posts) -

Sounds about par for the series?

Also, I'm going to go ahead and guess here that it's not so much a constant tutorial as it is introducing systems as they come, while the game paces introducing new systems. Just like all the other games in the series have done...? :P

#14 Posted by SharkEthic (1062 posts) -

If it's true, a six hour tutorial for the fifth game in the series seems fucking crazy.

#15 Posted by Bell_End (1208 posts) -

i needs something cools to happen in the first 45 mins or i loose interest and look at shiny things like bottle tops or spoons.

#16 Posted by david3cm (635 posts) -

Anyone know when embargo is lifted on this game? I am interested in playing it and I dont want to get my impressions from random forum chatter. I know some people will argue that professional reviews may be just as biased as regular players, but at least it will be a little better thought out criticism.

#17 Posted by ArtelinaRose (1859 posts) -

I don't see how this is any different from any of the other games in the series.

#18 Posted by SomeJerk (3362 posts) -

Is it tutorial, or a lengthy part of the game where new things are slowly introduced to the player in a tutorial-like way of "press X to Y", which is what passes for a tutorial this generation around ie FF13's 20+ hour tutorial?

#19 Posted by MEATBALL (3402 posts) -

Sounds like Assassin's Creed to me.

#20 Posted by Heltom92 (714 posts) -

I assume it's like other AC games where they are slowly introducing new mechanics to you over the first few hours.

2 edgy 4 me

Hopefully it isn't painfully obvious that it is tutorial stuff and they find a way to introduce mechanics through a series of story missions that play out in a logical way. AC as a series has always been pretty good about justifying and hiding the fact that you are playing nothing but a glorified tutorial mission.

That's only 5x shorter than FFXIII.

It should really be an option then. As the games get more and more complicated, a larger percent of them will have to be tutorial. Most gamers are intelligent enough to figure things out. We don't need our hands held for half the game.

#25 Posted by devilzrule27 (1239 posts) -

I feel like that first few hours of every Assassin's Creed games are mostly tutorials as they slowly introduce all their mechanics. That said if it's anything like previous games those tutorials are sprinkled in between some good action sequences and some story.

#26 Posted by Zaccheus (1801 posts) -

I don't know how this is news to anyone who has played the previous AC games.

I'm about 2 hours into this game and so far it's kind of a mess. There's a lot of arbitrary "walk 5 feet to initiate cutscene" nonsense. I mean a lot. Even more than previous games in the series. Also, I've played as 2 different characters so far, neither of which are the guy on the cover of the fucking box. I really feel like the story telling mechanic of this game has become kind of tedious.

#28 Posted by dropabombonit (1492 posts) -

I was all excited to play this today but now it sounds like I have to play for 6 hours before shit happens

#29 Posted by allworkandlowpay (874 posts) -

It's actually like and hour and a half.

#30 Posted by Pazy (2601 posts) -

That isnt good, I suffered through with AC1 and 2 because it was new and I was extremely excited but going through it again for Brotherhood was terrible and hard (though the game opened up and was fantastic) and I still have never got through the Revelations tutorial time.

#31 Posted by joshrholloway (72 posts) -

@david3cm: I believe it's 9AM Pacific this morning.

Kinda but more of story building.

I'll just get my face- and neck-stabbing enjoyment from Chivalry.

Fuck Assassin's Creed. There, I said it.

No I have not. Would like to try it, but I'm satisfied with Chivalry. People who have tried both are saying the combat in Chivalry has more depth anyway, even though it may not look like it at first.

The game is a load of dumbed down nonsense - Ubicrap have done it again.

#40 Posted by murisan (1119 posts) -

Oy vey... this has been the way since AC2. What did you expect from the next numbered game? So long as the tutorial introduces story along the way (like AC2 did so well), I'm more than fine with that.

#41 Posted by bslayer (222 posts) -

i'm okay with that. the build up usually gets paid off when you get to make your first kill, and it's that much more impactful.

He never said you don't kill in the first 6 hours...

#43 Posted by bslayer (222 posts) -

@murisan: true. well damn, now i've got nothing. whatever, as long as that portion is fun or interesting, right?

#44 Posted by murisan (1119 posts) -

@bslayer: I'm sure they are. People can bash Ubi and all that, but this is the first "AnvilNext" game, and the third Assassin's Creed. They're going to pace it so the majority of consumers enjoy it thoroughly.

Gaming sure has become a lot of hand-holding...

Source? Is this GameFaqs talk or from an actual review?

Hearing this and having watched some of the first couple hours of gameplay, I am now a little less interested in this game.

Who the hell are you trying to fool here exactly? Since when did Giant Bomb have people like this?
