The horrible frame rate is making it hard to enjoy this game

In all my years as a gamer I've never seen framerate ruin my experience so much. It's so choppy in the city's it's honestly hard for me to play. It's especially bad for this game because it ruins the fantastic animation. I'd wait and play it on the pc, but well, I don't have a gaming PC. Is there anything I can do to make it not so bad? I heard uninstalling it from the 360 hard drive helps, can anyone confirm?

EDIT: I also started my save before downloading the day 1 patch, if that has anything to do with it.

I have no issues with framerate at all. 360 version.

@The_Laughing_Man: @MariachiMacabre: @ChadMasterFlash: Well Fuck. my frame rate seems to be at 15-20 fps almost always, only when I get in small enviornments does it play smooth.

#6 Edited by _Chad (930 posts) - 6 months, 20 days ago

@RedRoach: All I can tell you is clear your cache but I've never had that do anything significant.

#7 Posted by DeShawn2ks (1013 posts) - 6 months, 20 days ago

@RedRoach: Man that really sucks. I am also playing on the 360 and the only issue I've had in my 10 hours is a few people just vanished in Boston once and for some reason during a cutscene my character went in the fighting stance and didn't move at all. Besides all that the game has been running smoothly for me.

#8 Posted by gaminghooligan (824 posts) - 6 months, 20 days ago

I can confirm my frame-rate went up after the uninstall. Hope they fix it though, my Xbox pretty much screams at me whenever I play off the disc lol

PS3 version seems a-ok to me, though I've heard talk of it having its fair share of issues.

No framerate problems here except when I ran into an area with infinitely spawning guards and had so many bodies on the screen the framerate finally collapsed. Otherwise it's been just fine. http://i.imgur.com/kDGMo.jpg

To further clarify: I have the game installed and it's running on a 4 year old 360.

Eh.. ya the framerate isn't great. They are clearly delusional. Not ruining my experience tho. Other things have bothered me. Like talking to some doods at a table and while they are talking their lips arent moving and they are not even acknowledging I'm there. I pan the camera around and my guy's face is all weird... his eyes are closed for some reason while he talks. Stuff like that just kinda takes me outta the game.

uninstalling and clearing cache seemed to help, but whenever I start running through a busy street it still drops.

The drop in framerate is noticeable at times but I can deal with it.

#18 Edited by Poppduder (390 posts) - 6 months, 20 days ago

I've only seen one dip in framerate on the 360 and its when

a boatload of wagons and shit was blowing up

Past that I actually remember thinking once or twice "wow, I'm surprised that the framerate is as smooth as it is right now."

Edit: Not installed, if that helps.

Or we've had varying experiences with the game.

On Ps3, my framerate has been pretty bad at times. It's really noticeable. It sucks, but I still love the game a lot.

#22 Posted by Sooty (6695 posts) - 6 months, 20 days ago

These games have never had very good frame rates in the cities. I remember taking back the PS3 version of the first game because the frame rate was so poor. (then again that game was also shit)

#23 Posted by MikkaQ (9714 posts) - 6 months, 20 days ago

Yeah it is fucking atrocious. I wish they didn't delay the PC version, otherwise I would have grabbed that one instead. Same thing with Max Payne 3, although that was at least good on the 360. Why do they do this? I just want the game when it comes out. I don't like having to get the console version if I can do otherwise, and I don't like playing games after the zeitgeist has passed. It's like a no-win situation right there.

#24 Posted by hwy_61 (873 posts) - 6 months, 20 days ago

I rented it from redbox and yes, the framerate is horrible. That being said, its sorta one of those things you just have to ignore until the next generation of consoles.

#25 Posted by addictedtopinescent (3645 posts) - 6 months, 20 days ago

Some small drops on the ps3 version for me, nothing that disturbs me though maybe that's just me being lenient on such details.

#27 Posted by krazy_kyle (702 posts) - 6 months, 20 days ago

framerate is pretty poor in that game, in some parts. Still a fun game though but I kind of wish I waited to get the Wii U version.

#28 Posted by Triumvir (292 posts) - 6 months, 20 days ago

I got a copy earlier today, and I'm pretty disappointed so far. The frame rate is pretty abysmal on my PS3 copy. It's pretty slow overall, but it can dip real hard when moving quickly through cities or fighting guys. I also think the new combat system is a hot mess (it feels sloppy and unresponsive), but I'll give that some more time.

#30 Posted by andrew2696 (160 posts) - 6 months, 20 days ago

Installed on my harddrive on the 360 and the framerate varies but only in moments of large explosions has the frame rate been horrible. That was once. No major problems with framerate that affected (effected?) gameplay.

#31 Posted by MB (9884 posts) - 6 months, 20 days ago

This is really sad to hear. I split my time evenly between PC & 360 (even though I do own a PS3, I just don't buy games for it normally) and was really considering buying the 360 version of AC3. One thing I can't stand in games is a poor or unstable frame rate...sounds like I'll be waiting for it to be released on PC. I'm sure it'll have full controller support just like the console versions anyway.

This is unfortunate, I wonder how much of this can be addressed in a patch?

More reason to wait for PC.

#33 Posted by Cameron (466 posts) - 6 months, 20 days ago

I wonder how much regularly playing games on PC influences being able to notice this? If you are used to everything being at or above 60fps at all times, then even 30 can look downright bad in certain games. It just seems strange that about half of the people here are saying there is no problem, and half are saying it's very noticeable. It seems unlikely there is actually such a big difference in the game's performance on the same hardware, so it must be perception.

#34 Posted by ImmortalSaiyan (4186 posts) - 6 months, 20 days ago

I never had issues with the frame rate yet but the game hard locked on me not long ago.

#35 Posted by Triumvir (292 posts) - 6 months, 20 days ago

@Cameron: It's almost certainly a main factor. Once you know what a good framerate looks like, it's hard not to see a poor one.

#36 Posted by RubberFactory (251 posts) - 6 months, 19 days ago

I went back and played a bit of Assassins Creed II and you can instantly tell how much smoother that game ran. This game seems to hover in the 15-20 fps while running around Boston and and it's distracting as hell.

#37 Posted by CaptainTightPants (2776 posts) - 6 months, 19 days ago

Yeah the frame rate is consistently terrible, I had to turn the game off after an hour or two because I seriously just couldn't take it anymore. I have made it a bit further in the game since then and the frame rate seems somewhat improved, but I am seriously regretting not waiting for the PC version.

#38 Posted by Alexandru (301 posts) - 6 months, 19 days ago

@handlas: many people just dont notice low framerates, while others are too bothered by them.

#39 Posted by crusader8463 (13074 posts) - 6 months, 19 days ago

I'm on PS3 and ya, there are some points when the game gets unplayably laggy. I'm using an old 80 GB model so maybe that's what's doing it. I'm going to give it some more time and if it doesn't get any better I will just wait for the PC release and pirate it so that I can run it in a playable state. First time I bought a console game on release in years and stuff like this is why I prefer PC. Though this is Ubisoft so I'm sure that ontop of the BS delay it will be a crappy port. That's what I get for trying to stick with their franchise on consoles I guess.

#40 Posted by Zirilius (194 posts) - 6 months, 19 days ago

Noticed people complaining about Installs on 360 and can say that I deleted my install data because I was getting lockups when loading the map when installed. Haven't seen any noticeable frame rate dips either but I did have a swarm of guards attacking me COD spawn style.

I am not at all a PC gamer, I do play Civ 5 and stuff but I stick to consoles, so I'm not used to having 60fps in every game. I think the bigger problem is that it roller coasters up and down so quickly it's hard not to notice. Also, every once in awhile it goes up to 50-60 and looks fucking amazing.

#42 Posted by supermonkey122 (686 posts) - 6 months, 19 days ago

I haven't had a problem with it on PS3.

#43 Posted by Lysergica33 (360 posts) - 6 months, 19 days ago

Noticed a loooot of slowdown up until I got to the frontier, where it evened out somewhat. Even then it's dipping into territory that I personally think is bordering on unplayable. It's not ruining my enjoyment of the game or anything, but this is clearly going to be at its best on PC.

#44 Posted by onarum (1805 posts) - 6 months, 19 days ago

well... there's only so much they can do with 6 year old tech you know.

#45 Posted by Klei (1409 posts) - 6 months, 18 days ago

Oddly enough, the game stutters in the secret basement of the manor.

Yeah, I'm just as distressed as you are. I no longer own a 360 so my platform choices are PC and PS3. I was originally planning to get this on PS3 but after all the things I've heard about framerate dips and generally bugginess, I'm pretty wary...

Though I can understand that you are upset at the poor job that Ubisoft did with its console versions, I really wish you would not have explicitly stated that you are planning to pirate the game. Although this would not affect the end result, I cannot condone that kind of mindset (not that my opinion will or should matter to you).

I also thought that, as mentioned by Brad somewhere, that generally the PC AC ports were done fairly well and it was just the BS DRM that Ubi put on them that made them shitty.

@The_Laughing_Man: i think that means you're just accustomed to the problem, not that there isn't one. but yes, frame-rate issues aside, i would gladly sacrifice faster performance if it meant having greater "stability" in terms of ai, scripting, ui navigation, etc. unfortunately in this case, we're not getting much of either.

#48 Posted by crusader8463 (13074 posts) - 6 months, 18 days ago

@wchigo: I bought the game at full price and it runs terribly. Because there is no option for me to get a refund and rebuy it on the better platform I must resort to piracy. If they would give me my $120 back or let me exchange it for the PC version I happily would, but I'm not going to go spend the same amount of money to buy the game a second time because they did a piss poor job on the version I originally bought it for.

No that is not true. I often play PC games at a high frame rate. AC3 does dip some times but not as much as the guy is stating.
