It’s little surprise Ubisoft is prepping another Assassin’s Creed game, but given the many times the company had us playing as Ezio, it’s interesting to learn Connor won’t be back next time.

Additionally, we’ll be heading to a new moment in history. Goodbye, Revolutionary War!

Ubisoft made the announcement on its earnings call this morning, revealing another Assassin’s Creed game is in development, and that it's scheduled for a release in the next fiscal year. Ubisoft's next fiscal year ends March 2014, and it’s likely Ubisoft will continue sticking to its holiday timeframe.

In addition to being vague on a release date, it’s also unclear whether the next Assassin’s Creed will remain only on the current set of consoles, or straddle the current and next-generation sets of hardware. With E3 not all that far away, it won’t be long until we have a better picture of the future.

Connor could still return in a future game. My problems with Assassin's Creed III weren't on his shoulders!

I'd much rather them do another assassin creed game with the female assassin from the vita game.

Did people honestly think that Ubisoft was not going to milk AC for all its worth? Hopefully they don't annualize Far Cry too.

I really hope they take their time and don't try to force the holiday release date yet again. Their games have been getting progressively weaker and buggier; I felt like I kinda hit the last straw with AC3 in giving them the benefit of the doubt.

And I'm glad they aren't using Connor or the same setting again. He wasn't exactly the most interesting MC of the series, and while I was skeptical beforehand, I decided that the setting just didn't fit a good AC after playing it. The frontier land just seemed like a waste of time.

Well, to be fair the second game was so drastically different from the first in so many ways, and then Brotherhood changed the formula significantly again, the only constants in the franchise seem to be an insane story, scaling buildings, and assassinating dudes in cool ways. I can deal with that.

I'm really hoping though that either this next game or the first next-gen AC game gives us a vastly different setting akin to the change from the Middle East to southern Europe in the first two games. I still think feudal Japan or even ancient China would fit the bill nicely and offer up big enough change in scenery to also facilitate some new gameplay. I skipped Revelations and haven't got around to AC3 yet so I'm not as sick of the series as some, but if they don't change things up pretty drastically with the next game, I'll have no problem skipping it as well.

But can anyone give me a reason to care about this franchise anymore? Anyone? Please?

Connor hasn't "starred" in an AC game yet, though.

The "star" of AC3 was Haytham, and we all know it.

They could re-group and figure out how to improve the "franchise" and make it a better series of games or they could just continue milking it in the way that makes each iteration after the first second game worse, like a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy and watch it slip between their fingers in their pathetic attempt to shove it out annually.

Most of us called this ages ago. There was still a hoard of fans going around pointing fingers at those of us viewing the future of the game for what it would become and telling us we were just "haters". And, now, you see that it is indeed waning. If you treat your creative content like "product", that is ultimately what it will become and when everything is just "product", it ultimately becomes devalued by those who would be your market.

Right?! It already felt stale to me when Brotherhood came out. It felt just like ACII, which isn't a bad thing except I was sick of AC after getting 100% in ACII. It was fun, & at times a great game but I was done with the franchise after it. Getting 100% in ACII took me forever, and was real boring collecting all the logos for it. As a compulsive gamer who has to get 100% in everything, I just can't put to the time or interest in another AC game. However, I played about 2 hours of ACIII on PC, and stopped from boredom and monotony. Just my opinion...

I think they need to scrap the series and start a new franchise. These are very talented developers, and their talent should be put to use on a better project. To me, AC is now just like COD. Every sequel feels like the same damn game as the previous ones in the franchise, but with a new coat of paint. Give me something new please.

I am an awful person who enjoyed AC3 (and Revelations, once it got going), Ubisoft have yet to disappoint me with their annual AC releases, so I look forward to more details. I really feel like a piece of shit for liking Assassin's Creed 3 though. I feel like I have e worst taste in everything.

@patrick - yeah, my problems with it weren't had nothing to do with Connor. They need to take a break and figure out how to make the series what it should be, instead of simply trying to squeeze everything they can from the well.

I'm probably being cynical, but I feel execs look at this and think "native character doesn't vibe" when the real problems of the game are far from that. Please don't stop being brave Ubi, but make a better game.

They spent 3 years developing AC3 and now they're just going to abandon those assets?

Good Riddance to connor though. He might've been interesting if his character was written as well as some of minor characters in the game.

AC3 exhausted me in the worst way. Every single thing I wanted to actually do felt like I had to trudge through a mile of swampland filled with pointless mini-games and terribly designed menus to get to it.

Man if it's even just ported to 360 from 720 then no way I'm buying it. That game being developed for new and old platforms = corners cut, greater potential squandered and after the last 2 ac's neither of which I finished they're going to need to reinvent or refine the very core of the franchises game mechanics for me to care.

Oh man, could we just get a new Tenchu game? I would be happy with that. Something with large sandbox levels like Hitman/Dishonored and then you get ratings on how you did. That would be great...

Haven't finished AC3 yet, though certainly will do for my love of the franchise. But I'm disappointed by this, unless there is a specific reason in the story why they would shift. Don't get me wrong, from an historical standpoint there are other periods I'd find a great deal more interesting that could be absolutely fascinating, but it's unfortunate that they might be ditching Connor (who while not the most memorable in the series, I rather liked) and of course Haytham... because, you know!

If the next AC game features Haytham as the main character I'll be happy.

Yeah, as cool as the ending to 2 was, I think it would've been better for the series to just be Assassins and Templars fighting over ancient technology for global domination/freedom rather than Those Who Came Before actually taking part in Demond's story.

    • Assassin's Creed 1: Altair during the Crusades / Desmond intro
    • Assassin's Creed 2: Ezio during the Renaissance / Desmond training
    • Assassin's Creed 3: Conner in England during the Age of Discovery (with features from Brotherhood) / Desmond on assignments and the Templars eventually taking over the world
    • Assassin's Creed Revelations: Adam in Africa during the human uprising against the Precursors / Desmond and Assassins revolting against the Templars

That would have been amazing, though probably hard to sell for the entire duration of a game. I would have loved to see them try though.

Haytham was pretty darn great; practically held the game up on his own.
