Assault Heroes is a standout dual-joystick shooter for the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.

Overview

Assault heroes is a vertically scrolling dual-joystick shooter pitting the player as the driver of gun-toting land and water vehicles. Players can go through the campaign on their own, or they can play with a friend locally or over Xbox Live. Developed by Wanako Games, the game was originally released on the Xbox Live Arcade for 800 Microsoft Points, but has since dropped to just 400 Microsoft Points, and later on the PlayStation Network for $9.99 USD.

Story

You are the only surviving member left of an elite forces unit. You're searching for a secret laboratory, and must destroy it.

Gameplay

As in any dual joystick shooter, the left stick controls movement while the right stick directs your gunfire. The objective is to take out all the enemies while avoiding their attacks.
There are three weapon types at the player's disposal:
  • Minigun - Low damage per bullet, but boasts a very high rate of fire. Upgrades increase both rate of fire and damage per round.
  • Flak Cannon - Low rate of fire (roughly 120 rounds per minute,) but can take out armored enemies with relative ease. Upgrades increase damage per round.
  • Flamethrower - An arcing, short-ranged weapon. Most useful against swarms of foot soldiers. Upgrades increase range and damage per round.

Each weapon can be upgraded up to three times, by collecting weapon-specific power-ups on the field.
Assault Heroes uses a replenishing health system. If the player's vehicle is destroyed, the driver is able to run at a slow speed and shoot a weak weapon. A new vehicle will appear after about 10 seconds, if the player survives.
Besides the standard weapons already mentioned, grenades and nukes can be used. Grenades can be lobbed at short distances, and can destroy most foes in one shot. Nukes are radial attacks, causing everything around the player to blow up. Both grenades and nukes are collected on the field as power-ups.

Bonus Areas

Each level has a special underground bonus area that can only be accessed on foot. While on foot, the player has a non-regenerating health bar that will cause him to die if it reaches zero. There are health packs to replenish health, and even if the player dies he is just transported back to the surface with no loss of lives. Completing these bonus areas earns the player an extra life and counts toward an achievement.
