Overview
Asteroids was first released as an arcade game by Atari in January 1979 and proved to be their best selling game of all time. It used vector graphics. The object was to destroy asteroids in an asteroid belt while avoiding collision with them.
Gameplay
The objective of the game is to destroy all the asteroids in the area and avoid colliding into them, which results in death. When asteroids are shot, they break up into smaller and smaller asteroids with each hit until they're destroyed. The ship can turn left and right and has a forward thrust. In an emergency, the ship can also warp into hyperspace (which causes it to disappear and reappear in a random spot).
In addition to asteroids, there are also two types of flying saucers which appear randomly. The large type shoots in random directions and the small type aims at the player. The action presented is "wrapped" around the screen (i.e. if an asteroid drifts off the right side of the screen, it will reappear on the left). Round after round, the number of asteroids increases (up to a maximum of 12). The games ends if the player loses all of his/her lives.

Atari's best selling game of all time, Asteroids was one of the most influential games of the Golden Age of Arcade Gaming. The original space shooter, and inspiration for many dual stick controller games such as Geometry Wars. Coming soon to a theatre near you.
