The original Atari Inc. was a pioneer in arcade games, home video game consoles, and home computers. The company's products, such as Pong and the Atari 2600, helped define the computer entertainment industry from the 1970s to the mid 1980s.
Current State
In October 2008 Infogrames completed the purchase of Atari for 11 Million dollars, making Atari a wholly owned subsidiary of the French publisher.
In 1984 the company was divided into Atari Games Inc. and The Atari Consumer Electronics Division. The later were sold to Jack Tramiel's Tramel Technology Ltd., which then renamed itself to Atari Corporation. Atari Games kept the rights to use the logo and brand name with appended text "Games" on arcade games, as well as rights to the original 1972 - 1984 arcade hardware properties.
Atari Games was later sold to Namco in 1985 and Atari Corporation was merged with disk drive manufacturer JT Storage in 1996.
In 1998 Hasbro Interactive acquired all Atari Corporation related properties from JT Storage and stared a subsidiary named Atari Interactive.
In 2003 an international company based in France, Infogrames Entertainment SA (aka IESA), acquired Hasbro Interactive and its related Atari properties. The Atari name and logo was in 2003 licensed to the American company Infogrames Inc (former GT Interactive), which changed its name to Atari Inc.
