Atari Out Of Europe

Posted by Jeff (3580 posts) -
As long as Ray is getting his, none of this other stuff matters.
MCV has the story on Atari's transition out of the European market, at least as a brand. Atari's European operation is primarily sales and marketing, and the report is that Namco Bandai will be picking up the business, now known as Distribution Partners. The company will deal with Namco Bandai's products in Europe, New Zealand, Australia, and Asia.

This probably explains the recent Sony move with the European releases of Ghostbusters. Under that deal, SCEE will publish the PlayStation 3, PSP, and PS2 versions of the game over there, while anyone looking for the game on DS, Wii, or 360 will have to wait until later in the year. The original news made it sound like Atari would still handle those versions when the time came, but by the time those versions are released, there won't be an Atari in that region to publish them. Kotaku is reporting that Distribution Partners will handle the non-Sony versions of the game. Those versions are still set to hit Europe at some point later this year.

In other words, still a bummer if you're looking to play Ghostbusters on a European Wii, DS, or Xbox 360 anytime soon.

Nope.

It'll probably suck anyways but I was really hoping for a PC release and atleast the beauty of this platform is if it doesn't come out here for it then you can torrent it.

I'm fairly certain it remains a dick move.

There's nothing beautiful about torrenting, PapaLazarou!

I think that the Sony iterations may be the only iterations that we see of Ghost Busters the game, at least in the near future!

I guess this makes Sony look a little less sinister.

Bullshit, we dumped Atari, not the other way around.  If she tells you different then she's a filthy lying whore.

Without wanting to be knob or anything - I speculated in the last article that I presumed Atari were having financial difficulties publishing the game in Europe.

Seems like that has been the case. If Sony hadn't moved, no one in Europe would be playing Ghostbusters next month.

I'll still concede though - it sucks for everyone else who was looking forward to the game. Shame to see Atari in this state too.

Can we eat some humble pie on the "dick move" comments though Jeff -- I wanna see you eat humble pie! ;)

so who's the "dick" now Jeff???? hahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but in all seriousness, for a professional video game journalist like you Jeff, i suggest you do more research before you start bashing Sony.  I know you're a bit anti-Sony deep inside your heart, but comon dude...you know better than that.

Eventually Europe and Australia will be free of video games.

#17 Posted by JonathanMoore (1858 posts) -

Still annoying for us over here in Europe.

This exclusivity bullshit that's been going on for a long time obviously bothers him, and I think this was just the perfect time for him to rant about it. I think there were very few people who even considered the possibility of Atari getting the hell out of Europe.

Very true. That's the bigger story here. Atari. Not In Europe!? WTF!?!?!

Still a jerk move by Sony even if it doesn't effect me.

Would you prefer it never came out in Europe at all? It's actually possible that Atari tried to sell the game to different publishers as well, but SCEE was the one who got it.

So the difference is you speculate in positive pro-Sony ways and he speculates in the opposite manner. Still speculations, nobody's right... The fact they are in such financial trouble only reinforces the possibility they were paid to keep it exclusive for x number of months. The rest versions will be published eventually, why not at the same time? Just because the partnership isn't officially formed? Publish under the Namco label for now, then, or whoever has the means to in the region. Makes no sense to delay it for a platform when they have agreements in place, even if semantics like how the new publishing platform will be called aren't official yet...

Oh man that Ray Parker record, my mom has that in her collection she got it before i was born.  Now that I am 23, it really makes me think, man this stuff is ever lasting. Remember Extreme Ghostbusters?  They were extreme cuz one guy was in a wheelchair?  Booo.

@Luke:

Uhhh, this is "Jeff's" site.  I'm sure if any low-level mod locked the thread, Jeff would PWN them???  I'm really confused as to what you're getting at.

Lol, I was just kidding and jumping on the hate on Jeff bandwagon, in my own little way :p

But regardless, it did give me an idea...  How about the GB Staff start promoting already existing Community Forum Discussions to Front Page Articles, if the Topic Created Post is deemed well written enough, as to not duplicate posts.

Huh, huh?

@LiveOrDie1212:

Okely-dokely.

You also sent me this via PM:

" fuck you bitch. don't call me fuckin gay you faggot.  i think you're the gay one because i know you wanna suck Jeff's cock ever since you knew. so shut the fuck up and don't talk shit to anyone you don't know. if you wanna talk smack, say it to me in person and see what happens. fuckin bitch."

lol.  I thought "U r ghey :)" would be taken tongue-in-cheek, considering it is intentionally misspelled and ends in a smiley face.  Kids and the internet now-a-days, I guess.

i suppose this is a bit weird. Buts its deffiantely not the worse case scenario for the wii, ds and xbox 360. I suppose because Ghostbusters is Sony's intellectual property they could just say "look the wii, ds and xbox 360 aren't getting it at all" and nothing could be done about it

#31 Posted by lantus (143 posts) -

So actually, Europeans are lucky to be getting it at all right now?

#32 Posted by Keyser_Soze (1186 posts) -

Apologise to Sony Jeff. Apologise for Sony rescued the game in Europe.
