Banned

Concept »

Games that have been banned, or refused a rating for one reason or another.

Do you own any "Banned" video games?

#1 Edited by squirrelnacho (310 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

What I mean by "banned" are games that were banned at one point, had to be cut to receive a lower rating, or AO rated games. For example, GTA SA before they removed the Hot Coffee mod.

I own the AO rated version of Manhunt 2 that was only available on PC as a digital download 2 years after the game's console release, and is not longer for sale. I also have the 18 rated version of Vietcong that was cut to T for the American release.

I own San Andreas (edited version) and Mass Effect (banned in Turkey, I think, for "lesbian sex"). Oh, and Oblivion got re-rated, but I don't think that really counts.

I own a copy of the elusive Pokemon Snatch, a very rare game where you collect pocket monsters and then use them to expand your illegal sex trade organization.

I wonder if anyone's going to say Rapelay....

Sure, Oblivion counts. Any game involved with a rating controversy does.

Yeah, if you have the T-Rated version it counts as banned. I have such a version (or my friend does, really, because he's a worthless fucking game leech).

Man, that was a weird effing set of circumstances that led to the re-rating. Example number infinite of why the ESRB has issues.

I owned Dead Space.

I have the first run hot coffee version of San Andreas. I used to have a CDR copy of Thrill Kill for PS1 if that counts.

#11 Posted by NekuCTR (1619 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

I've got a Little Big Planet copy with some super offensive music on it.

#12 Posted by TheDudeOfGaming (5878 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago
Manhunt, the game for aspiring psychopaths.
#13 Posted by waitwhat (251 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

postal 2

#14 Posted by Dimsey (866 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

I have Mortal Kombat, imported from abroad because you know... Australia!

I also got a copy of Manhunt before it was re-classified and pulled from shelves, so yay for that!

Lastly apparently Postal 2 was refused classification here, but we can still buy it from gog.com so.. Yay for that too!

Anyway, I've got an original copy of San Andreas that I've never played... I should do that some day.

 no, i don't think i own any.

#20 Posted by ArbitraryWater (8961 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

I once saw a copy of The Guy Game at my local shady pawnshop where you can buy incense and pristine Star Wars figurines in addition to the DVDs and Video games. I didn't buy it, partially because I don't really have any desire to play a crappy quiz game where the reward is underage boobs, and partially because it was like $25.

#21 Posted by fazzle (265 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

I have the aforementioned hot coffee San Andreas and the T-rated Oblivion, as well as the Sega CD version of Night Trap

#22 Posted by solidlife (838 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

what was the track? Why was it offensive. All I know is there is one tune that had to be removed, but I have no idea why it was offensive....

Yeah, I have that one too. Thanks for reminding me.. I would never have thought of Little Big Planet when I'm thinking of banned games. XD
#25 Posted by Legend (2495 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago
@BestUsernameEver It had Muslim prayers that some Muslim groups felt had no place in a video game.
#26 Posted by Rheinmetall (152 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Leisure Suit Larry Magna Cum Laude (PS2) It says on the cover: "Uncut version"

No More Heroes: Heroes Paradise (PS3) "Uncensored version", though only in Japan it is censored.

Nope.

#28 Posted by CoinMatze (288 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

I own a lot of UK versions of games which are cut or unreleased in Germany like Gears of War, The Darkness, Fallout 3 and New Vegas... All of them can be easily imported. I also own the orignal Dead Rising which is illegal to be sold in Germany.

The track had a couple of lines from the Qur'an in it. http://kotaku.com/5065076/littlebigplanet-faces-worldwide-recall-for-quran-references

EDIT: This was corrected with the day 1 patch that went out. If you play a recalled copy online, it'll be patched, but if you don't, cover your sensitive ears.

#31 Posted by MaFoLu (1820 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

I'm pretty sure my copy of San Andreas is from before they removed the Hot Coffee stuff.

#32 Posted by Metal_Mills (2805 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

I'm Australian, so yes.

I don't know about "banned" per se, but older copies of GTA San Andreas would suffice since the game was recalled and then reissued due to the "Hot Coffee" debacle.

Had a 1.0 San Andreas before Katrina. It was actually the game that was still in my OG PS2. Pried the CD tray open with a screwdriver to get it out but the moisture, rust, heat, etc. wrecked the shit out of both the PS2 and the game.

For some reason I ended up with a copy that game when it came out. It is in a box somewhere with The Bible Game

I still own my copy of San Andreas launch copy pre edit.

I once picked up the T rated version of Oblivion. When I went to buy it the Gamestop employees got all confused because the computer said it was M rated. I didn't tell them why the rest of their copies were rated M, someone who works at a video game store should know that.

#40 Posted by ShaunassNZ (2125 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Manhunt 2, Postal 2... etc.

#41 Posted by MEATBALL (1958 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

I own Mortal Kombat and an uncensored, imported copy of Left 4 Dead 2, both were RCed in Australia.

#42 Posted by Branthog (7045 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Nope. In the US, the closest you can get to "banned" is the industry's own non-legally-binding (thank fucking god) ratings system which still performs some serious censorship in as much as if you don't bow down to the ratings system requirements, your game could end up rated AO and nobody will sell it -- so while not direct censorship by the government, it may as well be (because it's under threat of "or we'll do it for you").

So, I don't own any games that are banned, but I also don't own any number of games that have never been made or released simply because the moment they produced the concept and put it on paper, they realized "the ESRB will never rate this such that it'll be on store shelves, so we'll never make any money from it". Kind of unfortunate.

I have a copy of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City before the dialogue was changed and they took out all of Danny Trejo's men shouting, "Kill the Haitians!"

#44 Posted by Cold_Wolven (1688 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

Manhunt on PS2 and Xbox that still is banned in Australia.

#45 Posted by biospank (603 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

I own dead or alive dimensions and it was banned due to child pornography laws in sweden, so Norway never got it.

#46 Edited by AndrewB (6871 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

The only thing I can think of is the original MA version of San Andreas before the Hot Coffee incident was discovered. And damn, that thing came with a pretty sweet case (and it didn't cost anything extra, either. Guess that was also before Limited Editions became ludicrous).

I must also have this. Didn't even know it was an issue 'till now.
