Fantastic development make this one of the best RPGs of the year. 0

BASTION - Video Review Bastion is exclusively a downloadable game which was first released as an Xbox Arcade title and then made the transition to the PC a short time later. Bastion’s style is second to none through its beauty and amazing sound track. Bastion can also be seen grabbing inspirations from old classics like “The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past” and other games of the middle to late 90’s era. Fantastic gameplay and a deeper (yet extremely simply) RPG experience than Zeld...

Bastion is quite simply one of the best games ever made. 0

A lot of times as a game reviewer you wonder what kind of game people like us would make. Certainly being exposed to decades of games both good and bad, popular and obscure that you would know what works and what doesn't, and most importantly whats good about a game and whats bad about a game. It might seem like common sense but so many games even with 70 million dollar budgets still get it wrong. A lot of games still don't know how to explain stories well, and fewer know how to present all the...

A child’s eyes see a simple world. For centuries, fairy tales have been tools to give those eyes a view on the world they might not see on their own. They are a means of teaching lessons and giving metaphors, to see villainy and sorrow overcome by heroism and bravery. In Bastion, Supergiant Games has crafted a new fairy tale in videogame form, one that allows you to revisit your youth while celebrating the games you loved when you were small and the world was big.The Kid wakes in his bed. He get...

Here's a kid whose whole world got twisted 0

Bastion immediately caught my eye when I first saw it. It has that old school swagger, that certain joie de vivre that makes it instantly appealing, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a solid game to be found here as well. Bastion takes some great combat, excellent customization options, and spectacular audio and visuals, and glues it all together with an infectious energy to create a fresh experience you’d be remiss to discount. It would be reductive to call Bastion an action RPG and leave it at ...

Bastion is a Well Crafted Experience with Beautiful Art Direction 1

The Xbox Live Summer of Arcade for 2011 officially kicks off with Bastion, the premiere title from developer Supergiant Games, and sets a high benchmark for the upcoming games in Microsoft’s summer downloadable line-up. Bastion offers fast-paced strategic combat, incredibly beautiful art direction, a healthy amount of customization, and one of the most memorable narrators in recent memory. It seamlessly combines all of these traits into a fantasy action RPG that players won’t forget anytime soon...

A classic example of "style over substance" 0

Ahhh, “games as art”. It is a debate that seemingly never ends. Bastion is the latest exhibit on the side of the “game are art” crowd. Unfortunately, though, what it really is is pseudo-intellectual faux art. It is a game whose simple story and mediocre action-RPG gameplay are disguised with buckets of style and unnecessarily cryptic dialog. There’s a word for that, actually, and that word is “pretentious”. Real art is original and creative, and it is only as weird or as thick as it has to be. B...

A simple game, gloriously presented 0

It's easy to become especially charmed by Bastion. The developers are seemingly familiar with how to craft a world with intrigue, Logan Cunningham (the narrator), Darren Korb (the composer) and the artists who poured liquid bliss into my eyeballs are the highlights of the game. Players will be mystified, because these things are not exactly new things in games, yet at the same time - they are. At least in this way. This use of narration, exceptional soundtrack and art are the things that hold t...

    Strong, but not Sticky 0

It only took 16 months and 22 hours, but I finally beat Bastion. In a world where you can buy a dozen games for a dollar it’s easy to stack a backlog longer than your lifetime. Far too many games slip between the cracks and, frankly, Bastion was about to. It was the trailer for developer Supergiant Games’ upcoming Transistor that urged me back to the falling tile world for the umpteenth time. Since the wiki is a click a way, head there if you're looking for a description of the game.Bastion is n...

BastionWhere do I begin? I have heard of this game so many times and never really thought much of it. I saw the screenshots and the talk, but it just never grabbed me. Then I heard the Giant Bombcast talking to one of the Super Giant Games team members and I got curious. Well, I am so glad that I did. This game combined so much of what I loved of classic RPG's like Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger and other similar titles. The graphics and art were beautiful and lovingly created. The controls wer...

    Bastion Review 0

Bastion is an action RPG developed by the newly formed Supergiant Games. What immediately sets Bastion apart is the fact that the entire game is narrated dynamically. Almost every action you make will be commented on by the smooth voiced narrator known as "The Stranger". The idea of an ever present narrator has the potential to turn sour, but Bastion pulls it off brilliantly. The unique narration, beautiful hand drawn graphics, moving music, interesting story, and fast paced gameplay combine to ...

The kid wakes up... and just rages for awhile 0

After following this game for quite some time it was finally released as the first Xbox Live Summer of Arcade game for 2011, and what a fantastic start to the promotion. Bastion (Supergiant Games' first title) has a unique art style, a deep fiction, some very entertaining gameplay, all held up by one of my favorite video game narrators ever. The story of Bastion is also very rich and has a lot of backstory if the player is willing to listen to the Voice-Overs and play those side quests, however,...

    Bastion 0

In this age of development teams numbering in the hundreds and multi-million dollar budgets, it still amazes me sometimes what a handful of people can do. The group behind the actual making of Bastion consists of a couple programmers, a designer, an artist, a sound guy, and a former game critic doing the writing. Greg Kasavin was always very likable when he worked at Gamespot, and it's cool seeing one of the many journalists who have switched over to the development side actually have a t...

Time for a fashionably late write-up about this year's best downloadable title so far. Bastion is a downloadable title from the Xbox Live Summer of Arcade and it most certainly deserves the attention it has been getting. At its base the game is an Action RPG that shows its depth through simplicity, but the art direction and sound design is where this game really shines. You start the game out waking up in a ruin as "The Kid". Your world has been struck by "The Calamity". What exactly that entails...

    It's good something fierce 0

I have to admit, while I was excited for Bastion, I expected to be a little disappointed. I expected that the combat might grow dull and repetitive, the RPG elements wouldn't be terribly deep, the story might not be up to snuff, and the narrator would lose his charm rather quickly. To my surprise Bastion didn't seem to lack in any of those regards, or really any regard at all. You are "The Kid" and kicking the game off you wake up in a mysterious world where paths form beneath your feet and your...

I've Played This Game Before... But Hey, I Liked It Then, Too. 0

Bastion is an action RPG developed by rookie indie developer Supergiant Games and released for the Xbox LIVE Marketplace (XBLM) and PC. It follows the adventures of an unnamed protagonist (referred to as “the Kid”) as he tries to piece together remnants of a shattered world.Design: 4 / 5I’m really growing to like the “downloadable game” concept, particularly as it’s executed on XBLM. Downloadable titles allow small developers to take solid, innovative concepts and realize them on a limited scale...

Supergiant Games delivers with this beautiful downloadable title 0

Bastion successfully shatters whatever expectations you may have for a download-only game. It's driven by a fantastical story delivered by a clever narrator (voiced by Logan Cunningham) who not only responds to your actions, but also fills in the universe with details that are vague enough to give you a pretty good idea of what happened to the world while managing to not swamp you in overbearing details. The fluid and dynamic combat system goes hand-in-hand with the game's storytelling in a rema...

A Bastion All Your Own 0

In the world of cinema, there are certain films which transcend both genre and era. They are highly regarded amongst many who appreciate the medium, the works that define our culture through expertly crafted storytelling. If Bastion were a film, I would safely mark it down as such.  Don't get me wrong, I had my fair share of doubts going in to Bastion; and for the first half hour I played, I feared the game would grow into a steady fest of smash this, listen to narrator, move forward. Luckil...

Highly Polished, but lacking in substance 2

Bastion is an isometric 2D action game, unlike similar games, Bastion doesn't use a dual-stick shooter setup, but instead uses auto-aiming and only a single stick. The rest of the controls are a button for a secondary attack, a button for a special attack, one for blocking, one for dodge rolling and one for healing. Weapons, both melee and ranged, are gathered over the course of the game and can be freely equipped. The story of Bastion is for most part told via a narrator that constantly comment...

A perfect choice for those who look for a worthy arcade game 0

Bastion's developers knew what they were doing and that's probably the reason why this game holds the player's interest till it lasts. It has a unique style, some neat ideas and also a very good pace and presentation. Story of the game is about a world destroyed by an event called calamity and a hero called " The Kid " who tries to restore it by creating a safe haven ( Bastion ) with the help of the game's narrator " Rucks " . Story of Bastion doesn't make you wonder what happens next, but it se...

In beauty, mechanics, and otherwise complete function, this game just works. Ugh, I love this game. Anyway...TO THE REVIEW!You're The Kid, a survivor of the Calamity, and restorer of Bastion. The Green Dude Reviewed a Great Game 0

I'll be honest, I had high expectations for Bastion. I followed the game via Giantbomb's "Building The Bastion" series, and was truly thrilled to play this game made by such a small development team. Even more interesting was one of the developers is Greg Kasavin, a former Gamespot reviewer. Not many reviewers actually create games, so i would expect when they do, they would know what makes up a good game. I thought the game looked great, and the art style is beautiful, and hard to believe one p...

Bastion combines action, RPG, and a great artstyle to make magic 0

Bastion cover artBastion is an action RPG that is currently part of the summer of arcade for Xbox 360's online arcade (XBLA). The game takes place on a mysterious planet/plane of existence/place that recently went through something called "The Calamity." As the initial sole survivor, you story is told through a narrator who almost seems to know what you are going to do before you do it. More on this later. The game plays like a standard action RPG where you get weapons, upgrades, and kill enemie...

    On Solid Ground 0

In an era where gratuitous excess is the norm for video games, Bastion is a testament to the power of restraint in its design and execution. Rather than bombard the player with and endless stream of particle effects, one-liners, and nonsensical plot points, Bastion elegantly unfolds layer by layer, allowing you to savor each moment and absorb the richness of its world. Like a well-written book, you're compelled to fill in the blank spots with your own imagination. In fact, the protagonist doesn'...

The littlest game that could 0

Holy crap, where to start with this game? It's not only a great baby's first action-rpg, it's also a challenge for seasoned veterans of the genre. And that's where Bastion's strength lies. It truly is an all ages game; the closest video games have ever come to Pixar quality. Not only can the youngest of the young play this game and enjoy it, but older gamers can find an incredibly deep and satisfying story that deals heavily in themes of forgiveness, loss, and genocide. Parallels between the Cal...

This is one of the best games that i've played, beautiful graphics, art-style and soundtrack combined with fun gameplay. I am usually not into indie games. I support them merely because I believe they are good for the industry. Usually I buy them and they just sit their on my computer after a short play. But this game really hooked me in from the beginning, it's art style is reminiscent of Korean cartoons that I've watched and the game play is pretty entertaining. The one standout feature of thi...

    Quite simply, amazing. 0

Few games pull off all areas of production so flawlessly as Supergiant's masterpiece, Bastion. From the art-design to the soundtrack to the gameplay everything is incredibly well executed and leaves you craving more even after the credits roll. Even though the story can be completed in around 6 hours, the option of a New Game+ and score attack mode will have you coming back. Aside from that, the incredible atmosphere and innovative storytelling will leave you wondering why other studios with muc...

    An impressive first try 0

We all know Bastion is an incredible game. It's absolutely stunning to look at, sounds like Kurt Cobain's voiceless ghost, has an impressively deep number of systems that keep the game evolving on and on. It's an awesome experience and deserves pretty much every bit of the credit it gets. So rather than say what's already been said by pretty much everyone in the industry, I want to give a critical assessment of what wasn't done quite as well because it seems like the flaws, small though they are...

Supergiant games show off what they can do with Bastion 0

The summer months are never the most exciting time for video games. Big titles are usually moved out of summer to looking for bigger sales around Christmas present buying season. This void of big budget titles has brought about the emergence of the Summer of Arcade, introduced by Microsoft for its Xbox 360 system, back in 2008. The concept of the summer of arcade is fairly simple. Fill the void of big titles with small innovative indie title for Xbox Live Arcade. Summer of arcade 2011 was kicke...

    What a treat. 0

I don't know what I was expecting going into this, but I was pleasantly surprised. Supergiant Games managed to develop a game with an interesting premise and story, rounded out with solid gameplay mechanics. The narration is inventive and interesting and relevant, though not without flaws. There were a few moments when I thought to myself, "what the fuck he is talking about again?" But those moments were fairly rare. And the music was fantastic. And not really what you'd expect from a fantasy ga...

Bastion is an action role-playing game released by Supergiant Games as part of the 2011 Summer of Arcade promotion on XBLA. Bastion is one beautiful looking game. But those worried that weak gameplay is hiding behind a wash of artistic brilliance, don't. This game offers up so many approaches to playing, combat always feels engaging. I've personally never come across a game with so much single-player replayability. One of this year's gems.Bastion is, on the surface, a simple click and hack adventure set in the mystical, floating realm of Caelondia - or what is left of it. I would recommend not reading this review until you've completed the game, since any spoilers would significantly worsen your experience of this game.    So, Bastion, it's my Game of the Year 2011, for many reasons. If I had to classify Bastion in a genre, it would be an ARPG, but it is far more than that, it is a story-driven ARPG, with a wonderful art style, and a wonderful gimmick (it IS a gimmick), of a narrator who sounds like Frank Zappa, telling the story of the game's protagonist, the Ki...

Bastion was the start of the 2011 Summer of Arcade, and is one of the finest Arcade games out there. With a great story and excellent visuals, the premier game from Supergiant Games really delivered on everything it promised.     Kid's got a nice arsenal to use. He loves mixing and matching.                     It was with muted anticipation that I started Bastion. Previews showed something like a cross between Diablo and Zelda with a vaguely JRPG style look. I thought it would be an interesting time waster, and I quickly downloaded the demo and started it skeptical of laying $15 for a product.                 “Proper story’s supposed to start at the beginning. Bastion is a beautiful 2D fantasy game with a unique storytelling method of an ever present voice narrating the story as it happens. The voice’s register hovers somewhere in the vicinity of Sam Elliott and Ron Perlman and serves as a constant companion that elegantly toes the line between pure exposition but also a character in the game itself. In addition to this unique conceit, the game itself is a fun action-RPG with great weapons, upgrade systems and a lot of well thought out gameplay design...

Bastion got a lot of hype this past year from many a games journalist. It was the nice indie, but still commercially digestible game that people like to feel good about and also like to tell others they feel good about it. There is no pretention from the developer, no secret agenda or broad push. It seemed that this was just a simple game with a good art style, a great soundtrack and a simple gameplay mechanic. Let me reiterate that though. This game had a simple gameplay mechanic. Simple. As in...

Most video games struggle to create a consistent sense of pacing, the medium isn’t really known for having amazing stories across the board, and adding player agency creates big challenges. Throw a narrator into the mix, like Portal, The Bard’s Tale, and now SuperGiant Game’s Bastion, and making a well-written story is that much more difficult. Having to decide how much dialogue the narrator will have based on player control isn’t something many studios dare try to tackle. You'll get to know this...
