Baten Kaitos is a turn base RPG for the Game Cube. A great RPG with an engrossing storyline 0
Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean is an RPG published by Namco Bandai for the Gamecube. The main thing that differentiates this game from other RPGs is the card system. The game revolves around the use of cards called magnus. Magnus capture the essences of real life items. A magnus of an apple will heal you but after a certain amount of time passes on your save file the apple may become a rotten apple which may have a 60% chance of poison. I had very low expectations going in with Baten Kaitos, but I ended up enjoying it more than I had wanted to. There was a ton of flaws with it, including the story, characters, and voices but I stuck it out and finished the game without feeling bored. I did cringe with most of the dialog though. The battles dragged on a little long, even the sub-enemies, so I dreaded going into a fight. The way you level up is really stupid, and the lack of CGI Cutscenes was extremely disappointing. Baten Kaitos is one of those games where the flaws are amplified by greatness in other areas, making them seem glaring and unacceptable by contrast. It's become a signature feature of Monlith Software's RPG output that their games can reach heights genre contemporaries like Tales Of or Dragon Quest could never hope to achieve, but never consistently.
