Batman Doesn't Suck

#1 Edited by jakob187 (21640 posts) -

Like my original pessimism towards Fallout 3 being proved wrong, Batman has done the same.  Consider this my official "I was wrong on this one" response:  Batman Arkham Asylum deserves all the praise it is receiving.  There is a certain hold-your-hand element throughout the game...but it's never intrusive or out of place.  The combat is as simple or as difficult as you want to make it.  Put quite simply:  you've gotta play this game.

Who else is playing it right now, and what do you think?

i think i may just rent it

I've been on the fence for a while now but I have a feeling it's almost time to jump the hell off that fence and just get the damn game.

Just hope it's lengthy enough to warrant a purchase, I rarely play through games multiple times unless there's a real incentive to do so.

Glad you're enjoying it though, from what I gather you are one of many!

I played the first hour and so far I love it. Its tough to explain but the greatest thing about it is that you ARE the Batman, you feel like Batman. The way he fights, the stealth, the gadgets. this IS Batman. I don't think another studio could've made this feeling in a game better than this one does. I cannot wait to go back at home and play this mofo all day!!

Quite surprised with it as well, really enjoying it thus far. Can't believe this whole Wal-Mart price cut thing. A brand new game for around $40.00 and its top quality. Wish that happened more often.

I don't believe Fallout 3 deserved the praise it got, but okay.

I'm playing it and it is epic. Damn that scarecrow part was fantastic.

Playing it and so far it's more fun than expected.  Don't think I'd quantify it as one of those games every gamer should play yet, but I'm not too far in yet.

I agree, but any gamer who is way into Batman is going to eat it up.

Cool, you are obviously ahead of me. I heading towards getting the "notes" from Penny. I've already found out that she took them from the safe and am tracking her down.

@jakob187: I'm on the fence about it. Is the story long? Is there more to do besides play through the single player?

I am going to buy it but I first need to get to a place where I can get it. I was sort of stuck in my house today but I should go out tomorrow or the next day. I really can't wait to play it.

That's where the second scarecrow thing is if I remember correctly.

I'm loving everything about the game right now. The combat, the story, the characters, the environment, etc etc... I could go on.

The voice acting?!

That whole intro while walking deep into the asylum with Joker talking is epic.

I loved that they didn't go all lazy and use text for certain parts. Gotta utilize the great voice acting talents you've got.

My only guess is that the trend of licensed games tending to suck has gotten into the minds of every marketing guy throughout the entire gaming industry so much that they all instinctively performed damage control procedures before the game even came out. I honestly don't blame them and I suppose they're as surprised about this game as everyone else.

Big props to Rocksteady studios

Well, all I can say is that they have been very respectful to Batman fans with this game.  The way Arkham is setup definitely rings a certain "Bioshock" bell in how everything is arranged...as far as locations.  There's a couple of other things borrowed from that game, but Hell...if they wanna borrow from great games to make a great game, I can't complain.

The combat is incredibly simple, but again, you can make it as deep as you want.  It really comes down to "kick the shit out doods however you want and it'll look AWESOME".  I love when you get that last guy down and it goes into slow-mo.  You can feel the impact of all the hits.

The detective stuff and sleuthing is really great as well.  Again, there's a certain aesthetic of hold-your-hand to it, but you've still gotta do some searching and some scouting.

Personally, the Riddler challenges are what do it for me.  They really make you take in the environment and the history of Batman.

Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, about this game is fucking incredible.  I feel bad for having doubted it.  FINALLY, Eidos has released a great game after a LOOOOOONG drought of crap.  Good job, guys!!!

Beat the game last night.  I'll have a blog up sometime later tonight talking about Batman, Shadow Complex, and BlazBlue.  Well, only a little bit about BlazBlue.

As an avid Batman fan since birth, I will get this eventually.

#30 Posted by pornstorestiffi (4909 posts) -

Will be picking it up when it drops in price, to me it looks like a good game, but a game i would only play once.I´m not into finding collectables, never like that stuff, feels like a waste of time to me, so that stuff won´t make me play it twice.

#31 Posted by jakob187 (21640 posts) -
@rjayb89: I would say that it is a necessity!

I've been to gamefaqs, I've been here, I keep expecting the prerequisite "WOW this game is overhyped" thread, but it doesn't exist.  I've been wanting this game but looking for excuses not to buy it, the only thing I've got so far is Ryan saying "eh... I don't get what the big deal is", but he hasn't released his scathing review... yet.

I may have to give in.
