Batman: Arkham Asylum puts you behind the cowl of the iconic Dark Knight, fighting his way through Arkham Asylum to stop the Joker from enacting a sinister plot that would have grave consequences for Gotham City.
Sorry to bump an old post, but I just bought Arkham Asylum through Steam, downloaded it, installed it and now I'm having exactly the same problem as Mars Cleric.
Pay good money for a game and it doesn't friggin' work. This shit is getting old.

not really, I ended up buying a hard copy pretty cheap and it gives me the same problem. I'm thinking my computer is stuffed (maybe DirectX stuff, I don't know) so I'm in the process of backing stuff up and will restore it. I'll post again on whether it works. or maybe I'll just buy the Xbox version so I can have 3 copies of it...
Let it be known to the world that I have defeated Batman.
After trying so many things, I bizarrely fixed the problem at some ungodly hour of the morning simply by updating my graphics drivers. It seems like such a silly thing, but have you tried it, Mars?
If it matters, I've got a NDVIDIA Geforce GTX 260, using Windows 7 64-bit. The driver I downloaded is release 266.58 (driver date 2011.01.18).
Have you tried reinstalling the game yet? I've had games not work on me through steam before and the only thing that fixed it was deleting the local content and reinstalling the game.
Great. When I tried it late last night, everything worked fine. But whenever I launch it today, it perpetually crashes at the opening movie (101_Batmobile_Intro.bik). Even after reinstalling my graphics drivers, I can't seem to get it to work again. Bruce Frickin' Wayne, if the Joker doesn't get to you first, I'm going to kill you myself!
Any ideas?
Edit: OK, I figured it out. For some reason I can't have PhysX enabled. At all.
@BombKareshi: yeah I've heard there's some weird physx problems with it I still haven't got it working on my PC, although it works on my laptop it just looks like crap. I think I might look for a cheap Xbox version
wow, only took 4 months for it to get moved to the AA forum :P I'm just finishing up the transfer to an external storage disc and will see if restoring the PC to original settings will fix the problem
@Mars_Cleric: I take it updating your graphics drivers didn't work. My drivers should have been up to date as well, considering the game was released in March 2010, but still I had to update to a release from this year in order to get it working. Out of curiosity, what graphics card do you have?
Windows 7 actually has a higher security access mode above "Run as Administrator" called "Run as Batman". You have to go into the DOS prompt and type "C:/signal" for it to show up.
okay so I went for a trip down to JB and saw the xbox version of Batman for reasonably cheap and caved and bought it. so now I own three versions of this game: the steam version, the hard copy of the PC version and the Xbox 360 version. ha ha...I'm not crazy, ha ha... BATMAN MADE ME DO IT! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
