Batman: Arkham City’s... er, city, will be bigger than Arkham Asylum’s overrun and corridor-filled island. The name of the follow-up implies as much. But just how much bigger will the new game world be? According to game director Sefton Hill, Arkham City will be about five times larger than the game world in the previous gameI'm bad at math and I don’t have exact dimensions at hand, but that sounds like a lot more space!

“The footprint of Arkham City is about five times bigger than Arkham Island, but our primary intention was never to create a bigger game world just for the sake of it,” Hill told GameSpot in a short interview

Hill went on and explained that Batman will be able to go wherever he wants in the new game world and will indeed encounter some side stuff reminiscent of open-world games, like missions, secrets, and brawls. However, the critical path will always be clear. Also, he made it clear that Arkham city isn’t a sandbox.

“I wouldn't describe the game as ‘sandbox’ because a totally open and free-form game world would not allow us to create the kind of atmosphere that we wanted to,” Hill continued, “but we don't hold your hand either. Arkham City is its own place; a massive super prison, jam packed with supervillains, thugs, and psychopaths.”

“There aren't any rules, but it has a law of its own, and this is why it is a perfect setting for Batman. Gamers will have to think and act like the Dark Knight if they want to survive in a place like Arkham City.”

Earlier, Hill said that the team is trying to recreate the “pressure-cooker” atmosphere from the first game. So, even though Arkham City is several times larger than the island of the original, Rocksteady will attempt to make you feel like you need to progress in the actual game instead of wandering the streets looking for a thug or six to smash. Sounds hot, right?

I'm sure this will be awesome, but in my mind, part of what made AA so great was a open world feeling into a very confined environment.

Damn, that's impressive. Hoping that there'll be enough in the city to keep you engaged and not just a bunch of stock repeated sidemissions.

This is great news, the first Arkham felt really constricting because of its size. Bigger IS better.

I forgot how much I loved the first game.

I definitely don't think an open world setting would help the game at all, it's nice to have some amount of freedom, but the enclosed spaces was really what set the mood in the first game.  I think it's best they stick with the Metroid-vania style, rather than taking the easy route of making it completely open world.

Not sure i like the sound of open world. I've been burnt enough times by the crappy spider man open world games with there 5 side missions repeated 600 times.

This could go either way, but one thing's for sure: they just assured that this game will be REALLY great or REALLY terrible, it's unlikely to be merely mediocre.

Can someone PLEASE pay these guys whatever they want to make a Superman game?  I feel that they're the only ones that could do it properly, and a GOOD Superman game would probably be the best thing ever (though, it should be noted that my opinion of a "Good" Superman game is pretty much just giving me the ability to punch a dude THROUGH a skyscraper...love it when he does that).

I think they've done so well with Batman because he has such an interesting backstory and a lot of really cool villains..  Superman doesn't really have either, I'm sure they could get the gameplay right but what about the mood and setting?  Those are the things that really made Arkham Asylum what it was.

Was the backtracking really a problem?  It's not like they were just reusing areas like some games do, it was more about exploring and finding new areas you couldn't access before without certain abilities..  Again, Metroidvania.

The first game was the perfect size with an enjoyable element of backtracking. I don't know about this 5 XL city, but then again what other medium size environment can you lock up the Bman in besides the Asylum...Comic book guys- anything?

Is it going to be an detailed, interesting world? Or just a generic, bland open world. I like small worlds sometimes, the developer has the luxury to make them unique and interesting, certainly something done well in Arkham Asylum.

"World size" is not really a huge concern of mine when it comes to this game, it's not really what I'm going there for.

"...our primary intention was never to create a bigger game world just for the sake of it"

This quote keeps me optimistic. I really hope they don't lose the excellent focus and pacing of the original.

Open world games suck. A story focused adventure is exactly where The Batman shines. I'm stoked that they are trying to keep the adventure tight. The first Arkham was a fucking superhero revelation.

Great... now i will be in the South, and the key i need i held by someone on the North corner, but i'll have to travel 5 times more than in AA.  I hated all the backtracking the other game had. I hope this one solves it.

“There aren't any rules, but it has a law of its own, and this is why it is a perfect setting for Batman. Gamers will have to think and act like the Dark Knight if they want to survive in a place like Arkham City.”

I'm guessing thinking and acting like the Dark Knight to survive in a place like Arkham City pretty much just involves applying liberal amounts of punches to folk.

" "World size" is not really a huge concern of mine when it comes to this game, it's not really what I'm going there for.

"...our primary intention was never to create a bigger game world just for the sake of it" This quote keeps me optimistic. I really hope they don't lose the excellent focus and pacing of the original. "
Yeah, a big world doesn't mean anything really as long as it's as directed as the first one.
