Batman was created by Bob Kane and is part of the DC Universe.

Batman's origin story is fairly consistent throughout his various incarnations: at a young age, Bruce witnessed his parents murder. However throughout the years, the Wayne's murderer has changed a few times. Originally, the Waynes were killed by a nameless thug. Tim Burton's 1989 movie interpretation then attributes this to Batman's arch-nemesis The Joker. In 2005's Batman Begins, the origin resets to a random thug named Joe Chill, a poverty-stricken man who is later repentant and then shot down to cover the crimes of mob boss Carmine Falcone. Despite these divergences, there is a consensus that witnessing his parents' murders makes him resolve to devote his life to ending crime.

In the Christopher Nolan incarnation, Bruce disappears into Asia living as a street criminal and is eventually arrested and put into prison himself. He is then emancipated by the League of Shadows; a fundamentalist vigilante organization that has been around for thousands of years. After training with them, he returns to Gotham and creates the alternate persona of the Batman to fight crime.

Unlike other superheroes, Batman has no superpowers and relies on his various gadgets, martial arts, intellect, and psychological mind games to fight crime. His punishing training regime has resulted in his being a near-perfect human specimen in terms of mental alacrity and physical conditioning. Batman lives at Wayne Manor located in Gotham City; which also houses his base of operations, the Batcave.

Batman's arch rival is The Joker, an extremely psychopathic murderer. Villains in the Batman universe are famous themselves with their own fan bases. This has caused the Batman mythology to have a sort of "Gallery of Villains". Some of the most notable villains include: The Penguin, The Riddler, Catwoman, Two Face, Scarecrow, Ra's Al Ghul, Harley Quinn, Clayface, Mr. Freeze, The Ventriloquist, Bane, Black Mask, Killer Croc, The Mad Hatter, Mr. Zsasz, Poison Ivy, Man Bat, and perhaps the most famous, The Joker.

The games that Batman have appeared in are mostly licensed from movies and television shows, but a few games based on the comic books have appeared. Batman is scheduled to appear in games not based on a strict source, such as Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe and DC Universe Online.

As Bruce Wayne, he helps Gotham City through charity events, while as Batman he strikes to inflict vengeance and security. He has also dated many woman but only for a short while because of his "night shift". In some Comic book stories he has been married to Catwoman and had a daughter, also known as the Huntress, and in other stories a Son named Damien when he was with the daughter of Raz al ghul, Talia al Ghul. Damien, in some stories, is supposed to be the successor to Batman after Bruce Wayne.

He was recently killed in battle with Darkseid. He used a radion bullet to hurt the evil god, who was eventually defeated by Superman and other heroes, saving the world once more. At the exact same time, Darkseid fired his Omega beams, leaving nothing of Batman but a skeleton.

Movie Adaptations of Batman

Batman has currently been used for six live action movies.

Four of these movies were part of the "batman series".
  • Batman
  • Batman Returns
  • Batman Forever
  • Batman & Robin

Some see, at least the first two, as classics. Both of which featured Micheal Keaton as Batman were directed by Tim Burton. Batman Returns received some controversy, being said to be too dark. The last two were directed by Joel Shumacher, with Val Kilmer and Goerge Clooney, respectively, taking in on the eponymous role in the latter two films of this Batman movie run.

The Nolan Batman films are often seen as the pinnacle of the Batman films, the "true" Batman. These films have a more realistic take on Gotham City and the Batman universe. These movies contain a new love interest by the name of Rachel Dawes. Batman is played by Christian Bale, who has proven he has the chops to pull off dark characters such as those he played in American Psycho, The Machinist, and The Prestige; though some tend to have a problem with his raspy "Batman voice."

The two films the are part of the Nolan Batman universe are:
  • Batman Begins
  • The Dark Knight
  • The Caped Crusader?- This is a rumoured title of the third film as seen on IMDB.com.

There is still speculation on whether a third will be made. Because of the record breaking success of the Batman: Dark Knight, Warner Bros studios has expressed extreme interest in the creation of the 3rd film, although nothing at the moment has confirmed that they have started the project as of yet. Nolan himself has stated that he won't do a third film unless the story is very good.
