Every game is a contender, until it come out and disappoints us. We know nothing about this game right now. We'll see.

I'd really like to see Battlefield 3 succeed and blow us away, but the competition for GOTY 2011 is going to be very tight. Contender? I'd say so. Winner? Impossible to speculate at this point.

GOTY? Dunno. That really depends on what they do with the single player campaign. If I had to guess, I'd say it will be right up there for multiplayer of the year, but even that is pure speculation. 
 
I'd say it's pretty much guaranteed it will be on anybody that is in to multiplayer shooters Top-10 lists.

A shooter and/or multiplayer top spot is quite likely. But GOTY? No way! Mass Effect 3, Batman and Uncharted 3 will duke it out I guess. Maybe Dead Space 2 is also up to the task, and LA Noire might also surprise us. I think story driven games have it much easier, but often they deserve it. Some really touch us. Thats quite a feat.

I'm not too certain it will take GOTY. But if it's an improvement from BF2, I would be outraged if it didn't grab best multiplayer at least.

This thread reminds me of how many games are sure to be great this year. The real question for me is: what's going to come out and surprise us? Super Meat Boy and Limbo surprised the hell out of me last year.

most likely, i have tons of faith in DICE but...there sure are a LOT of amazing games coming out this year.

I think it definitely will be a contender. It's a big game, and looks damn good, so it probably has as good of a chance as any other. But there a shit-ton of great-looking (I don't mean graphics, when I say "___-looking", but that too, I guess) games coming out this year, so it will be a tough fight indeed.

Also, just reading the Killzone 3-review, I have suspicion that the single player part will drag BF3 down. It's just something DICE is mot very good at. I bet it will end up as a Frostbite 2 technology showcase, that takes itself way to serious. Thats what happened to BF:BC2 here on GB as well.

I'd say not a a chance.  There's so many amazing looking games this year that I don't believe another generic shooter deserves to even be a contender. 
 
I also think considering a hack & slash/loot grinding game like Diablo better than everything else is pretty laughable as well..  and I'm actually looking forward to that.  Come on, the gameplay isn't that deep and it certainly isn't going to have a story to rival the likes of the Witcher or ME3.  It would be a contender, if it were going to be released this year, but it doesn't instantly eliminate everything else.

I remember when Mass Effect 2 came out last year and everyone started listing off 20 or so games that could be it for GOTY. You go back to those threads now, and maybe only 2 games at the most turned out to be legitimate contenders. 
 
Most of the games posted here could definitely turn out to be great, but maybe not GOTY material. We really have no idea how anything will turn out so lets give it some time.
