So we all know that DICE is pretty much unrivaled in the games industry when it comes to sound design.  No weapon pops like a Battlefield weapon pops.  Despite all the deafening tank shells and perpetually echoing sniper rounds, there is a more subtle sound that gets my blood flowing.  That's the way the main Battlefield 3 theme begins to play real low in the background when a match is about to be won.  Next time you're about to plant a charge on the last M-Com, or if you see the ticket counter go into single digits, just pause and take a listen.  Really nice touch.  I've never noticed it in any other Battlefield game so I assume this is a new thing.

Anyway, what aspect of the audio design in Battlefield 3 really stands out to you?

Hmm, let's see...

Every one of them. Audio in this game is like a set of nice breasts for the ears.

"Be advised"

I love hearing this all the time. It makes my ears just ORGASM

BE ADVISED, I AM COMING

This thread became explicit far faster than I had anticipated.

I have only played the beta, but the distant gun sounds are nothing like any other game. They just nail every aspect of the audio in this game. The way the guns sound different outdoors compared to in is also extremely impressive.

@Spoonman671: It's much better than the wailing alarms of the Bad Company games.

When you see the aurora of light coming down a dark narrow hallway and the sound of the rocket as it just barely passes your head is fucking amazing every time it happens.

Also, the sound when a jet flies right over you. You don't see it but damn if I don't hit the deck everytime it happens.

I really didn't mean anything by that comment.  It was just an offhanded joke.

And let's not forget the A-10 cannon's grumpy monster yawn.

The sound signaling the imminent end of a round was in BC2, except it was a siren, which was horrid.

#15 Posted by max_mischi3f (63 posts) -

The subtle "hisssssss-thwup" of incoming sniper rounds sends me running for cover every time. It's even worse when the sniper is far enough away that you don't hear the report from his gun to lead you to his position.

#16 Posted by max_mischi3f (63 posts) -

Likewise the sound of a plane getting a missile lock sends me into a cussing panic.

#17 Posted by BawlZINmotion (714 posts) -

The sound of boots hitting pavement. The first time I played Operation Metro in Conquest mode, at the beginning, 16 jacked up marines running full tilt, slamming their boots against the conrete, while everything else remained silent. Then everything erupting in an orgasm of violent noise.

#18 Posted by RadixNegative2 (524 posts) -

My favorite has to be a rocket zipping past your head, barely missing it and exploding behind you. It's awesome every time.

I absolutely concur with the above. I also like the switch flipping and instrumental noises when you enter a tank or air vehicle. Oh, and I love the sound of all of the mounted weaponry (from the LAVs and HUMVEEs to the big tanks).

#20 Posted by Xeiphyer (5608 posts) -

I always love the sound of guns being fired inside buildings, the rapports are great.

Also, not a single sound, but when you are trying to hold down a point and there are bullets flying all over the place and things exploding all around you deafening you. Its so fucking intense.

I like the voice acting of the soldiers in multiplayer. So unprofessional rofl. It's like they never went for any voice procedure lessons.

"Uhh.. Yap. I would like to confirm that that is an enemy tank.

... *long pause*

Over."

I like to swoop as low as possible over friendlies, maybe while doing a barrel roll.

I wish someone would do the same for me, I wanna hear what a barrel roll sounds like

When you get a missile lockon with a jet/chopper.

Agreed. DICE nailed the dynamic soldier talk perfectly.

BF3, along with BC2, are the only games I intentionaly cranked up the volume and sub-woofer just to hear all the bells and whistles of each gun shots. Usually, I don't play loud, but with these games, damn son.

Breasts... for... the ... ears? I never considered that that my ears might be wanting that, but then again, I do love some Battlefield audio. It's like a... cock for the ears. no wait...

It's like a ... vag for the ears... ehhh... that sounds like a disease.

It's like... music for my ears, There ya go!!!

#27 Posted by Jonnyflash80 (502 posts) -

I love the effect you get when firing off guns inside a small room or enclosed area. It has that subtle ear ringing effect, kind of like when a grenade explodes near you except it's way more subtle.

This game is absolute auditory bliss with a good pair of headphones and Dolby Headphone turned on.

#28 Posted by SomeJerk (3361 posts) -

I like it when I use the shock paddles on a recently downed friendly.

Try it.

#29 Posted by Ghost_Cat (1467 posts) -

The insanely humorous dialogue from both teams. Like the assault class on RU side, where trying to revive someone activates the sound clip "Die you motha fucka!"

Being in the Military I can attest that although we aren't allowed to curse over the channels, it's something that we would totally do if you've seen some of the action in BF3. For me I love the sounds of the rounds pinching the surrounding objects around you, they nailed it.
#31 Posted by Branthog (5592 posts) -

Frankly, I don't get the deal about the BF3 music. As the match nears the end, you hear a couple bass vibrations mixed with lots of static. Then the round ends and you get a five or ten second clip from the trailers. That's about it.

#32 Posted by Giantstalker (1708 posts) -

It's minor, but they put in distinct sounds for the transmission changing gears in armored vehicles as you accelerate/decelerate.

THIS BLOWS MY MIND.

... and the pitch/tempo of the various turbine and diesel engines are fantastic too.

My favourite part of the beta was how when a round was won, everything kept going until the screen faded out and the noisy menu noises happened. It might of had something to do with the OP's point, but it's awesome how it gives a sense that the battle isn't finished. Much better than people suddenly just stopping stood in place. It was an unexpected piece of awesome.

#35 Edited by awesomeusername (4230 posts) -

I don't have a favorite sound. That games sound is too jizztastic to have a favorite sound. DICE has the best sound design in the business. The sound is my second favorite thing about the game. Everything sounds so sexy. So much 'sound' in my post. Jeez.

#36 Posted by Capum15 (4960 posts) -

It's all amazing, but I have to lean towards the explosions being my favorite. Especially when they go off close enough to make all the other sounds stop and your ears ring.

The talking for spotting targets is also pretty great.

#37 Posted by selbie (1962 posts) -

The mechanical sound when you switch between machine gun and main cannon in the tank.

taktaktaktaktaktaktaktak....*clikathunk*....BOOM......*kashoop*......BOOM.. *clikathunk*...taktaktaktaktaktaktak

HERE COMES THE RAPE TRAIN BABY, WOO!

Oh absolutely, I remember the first time I came under MK-11 fire in Seine and hearing the "snappada tip tip," and diving for cover as the bullets pecked the rubble around my head.

Yep. That "SHHHHPPPPPFFFRFPRFPPFFFFFFFFF...THOOOOM" is amazing.

Also the sound of a jet making a low pass and firing its gun and the sound of an attack chopper firing off a volley of missiles.

Ohh good call on the missile volleys. And yeah, I always make low passes over people when I'm in the jet because I know it sounds awesome.

I ...appreciate the crisp snap of a bullet passing nearly too closely. I hate it, but I appreciate it.

Jets flying low to the ground. With the sound cranked up, it's almost loud enough to blow me out of my seat.

Well.... I mean.... huh.... thats without a doubt the most appropriate statement about DICEs audio, and yet, at the same time, there's something ever so wrong about that analogy.

#45 Posted by bigsmoke77 (791 posts) -

When an RPG screams over your head, its UNFREAKINGBELIEVABLE!

#46 Posted by Brazooka (15 posts) -

My favorite audio effect is probably the indoor death groan. Mostly in Bazzar, in those great corridors, when someone gets killed you hear that echoing UUUGH (something like Saving Private Ryan's epic knife scene). It just makes my skin jump off and run away in fear. But my body stays, ready to knife the fool ;)

Rocket zinging by is crazy good, too.

Also, love the battlechatter. Not as good as in BC2, but you gotta love the "Get ready, IM'A LIGHT THESE MTFs UP!"

#47 Posted by Chtasm (459 posts) -

Whenever you use the Boost for the tanks. The engine whine and the rumble makes it sound like it's giving its all to get you where you want to go.

#48 Posted by RoyCampbell (1096 posts) -

The little bleeps and bloops upon completing an objective are totally cool. I also love the way the HUD looks; the aforementioned bloops accompany that very well.

#49 Posted by c0kemusheen (64 posts) -

Every sound seems so believable and immersive, the combat chatter especially. In Bad Company 2 I used to play with the "war tapes" audio mode enabled, it gave everything a much more intense punch. But now it seems as though the default "hi fi" setting is just as good! Amazing sound effects as always, props to DICE

#50 Posted by bwmcmaste (857 posts) -

I should also add the whole series of sounds that comes with having your tank disabled: the sound of your tank getting spanked by an RPG, the grinding of failing treads, and the bacon-frying sound of your torch repairing the big flaming hulk.
