DICE has been a busy bee of late. From Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, to Medal of Honor, to period piece add-ons for Bad Company 2, EA has been leaning on DICE to deliver content for all kinds of games. All the while, DICE has been in active development on the next iteration in its flagship Battlefield franchise, Battlefield 3. Details are, sadly, still hard to find, but there's a chance that the first image of the game has been leaked.

Battlefield 3 Blog believes it might just have the first, totally unofficial image of the game, which doesn't even have a release date yet. The image (below) reportedly comes from a Swedish fellow who calls himself "Doe," who snapped a quick one at the home of a DICE developer, obviously off a TV or a monitor.

 I hope he's crouching.

To be crystal clear: this is in no way an official screenshot of the game and the source here is suspect to boot. However, the shot does look legit. The soldiers, the atmosphere, and the guns look very Battlefield-esque, and as the BF3 Blog notes, the HUD elements take specific cues from various BF games, most notably Battlefield 2.

Unfortunately, we won't know if this image is real or not until DICE actually tosses out the first screen of the game, which might take a while. Feel free to take this shot with a grain of salt, or salivate with the rest of us. Whatever makes you happy!

UPDATE: No, this is not a leaked screenshot of Battlefield 3. It's a fake created from this Battlefield: Bad Company 2 wallpaper. Oh, Internet.

If it is real, it is gonna be a gorgeous game.

Intresting

It looks like a modern military shooter!

Looks like BF: BC2 with a different mini-map.

#8 Posted by EpicSteve (6479 posts) -

Battlefield 1944

#9 Posted by Joelteon7 (101 posts) -

The map is Arica Harbour, its town more specifically. All the assets look like they're from BC2.

It's possible the interface is actually one of the many iterations DICE were toying with leading into the release of BC2; from the various short gameplay trailers you could see they were tinkering with different designs.

I very much doubt this is BF3.

Hey, that CoD screenshot's map is on the wrong side!

#11 Posted by MisterMouse (3543 posts) -

if that looks real, I feel like the beauty of this game could be impressive.

Was going to say the same thing.

this was already proven it was fake
   Oh thats BC2^^

The player-character in Killzone 2 was practically that short.  Good-grief, Sev seemed to be about 4''1' in that game.

Should be awesome :)

It's a fake according to the blog:

UPDATE: we can confirm that it’s a fake — Photoshopped from this Bad Company 2 wallpaper. Thanks for our commenters “DomagojH76″ and “EL1TE” for pointing it out.

I hope he's not crouching. I love the Killzone 2 perspective in shooters.

#19 Posted by ch3burashka (5018 posts) -

Nothing interesting nor special about that image. It's becoming much harder to differentiate between the numerous shooters these days.

And apparently it's fake. However, the comment still applies.

lol fake.  woulda been nice tho.

#22 Posted by Sogeman (866 posts) -

And a pretty obvious fake since it looks exactly like BC2

#23 Posted by Darksaw (315 posts) -

Could well be. The poses and positioning of both the camera and other players make me think it's more of a pre-rendered screenshot though.

@ the title of this news story
no.

got me excited however
BF3 is the game that makes me upgrade my pc
even if i can only just play BLOPS atm with an unstable framerate

#25 Posted by Zereta (1365 posts) -

Doubt it. Besides, am I the only one who thinks that the positioning of the gun is off?

Journalism is hard

#27 Posted by canucks23 (1087 posts) -

So fake it's obvious. It's a BC2 screenshot in the background, with a custom made shitty looking minimap, and a random bc2 gun slapped on the front. This is embarassingly fake why is this even posted?

#28 Posted by ArcLyte (881 posts) -

sure hope DICE doesn't fuck this one up.

#29 Posted by DerekDanahy (867 posts) -

Like everyone else has said: This is BC2.

#30 Posted by Guexx (60 posts) -

I'm pretty sure its fake....anyway i really doubt they'd use the same engine for bf3

Yeah they shouldn't post loose rumours like that.

Love the people saying things about Brads journalism, yet when Jeff posted a video of a girl saying Cattackalysm as news it's fine xD. Love this community so much.

This just in: Battlefield 3 will be a desaturated version of BFBC 2.

That said, I imagine Battlefield 3 will look a lot like this.

there's always the chance it's the new F2P Battlefield coming out. It does run on the BC2 engine.

#39 Posted by Mikewrestler5 (602 posts) -

Can't believe some of you legitimately thought it was real.

#40 Edited by FrankCanada97 (4039 posts) -
@Shisnopi: Actually, I think it's based on the BF2 engine.
EDIT: Correction, BF2142 engine.
#41 Posted by Jayross (2365 posts) -

That looks pretty fake to me; looks just like BC2. Even that sign is from Arica Harbor.

#42 Posted by MrKlorox (11209 posts) -

If by "crouching," you mean "prone", then I agree. Otherwise go play some real fucking Battlefield.

The military is equally open for those who are themselves 'vertically challenged'. Equal opportunities man.
#44 Edited by EpicReflex (205 posts) -

It's blatantly obvious that it's BFBC2 - Africa Harbour.

I read that it was its own unique variation of the engine used in BF2/2142/Heroes, like each game before it.

The scale in the top right is not BC 2.

tbh it looks like the new tomb raider reboot game
