What's this I hear about armor regeneration on vehicles?

Now I'm not asking for a simulation shooter because quite honestly they suck so I'm fine with the whole "regen health" thing on players...but on vehicles? Since when have vehicles had the ability to heal themselves? That just sounds retarded to me

    Edit:
Link: http://au.pc.ign.com/articles/117/1172554p1.html look for the 5th paragraph or just search "vehicle" on the page and you'll find it or wtf I'll just paste it:

Vehicles have also been tweaked in Battlefield 3, in hopes of making them more fun for both the operator and passengers. Vehicles regenerate small amounts of health when damaged, but in order to heal to full will need the assistance of an Engineer. Vehicles can also be immobilized right before destruction, forcing an Engineer to intervene to save it, and giving the passengers a chance to bail out. The hope is that this will alleviate a lot of the rage that comes from a team jumping into a humvee, only to be destroyed by one well placed rocket. Yes, the rocket might kill the person it blows up right next to, but the whole squad won't be punished for one crazy driver, or feel like vehicles are death traps.

It sounds retarded as hell but I suppose it makes sense from a gameplay stand of point. If you correctly manoeuvre a vehicle you can avoid it from being destroyed by poking in and out with a tank for example.

What the fuck? Can I get a link to confirm this as true? Because if so, that is possibly the stupidest fucking thing I've ever heard.

This is the first I've heard of that. Source?

If true, I hope they only have it in single-player. That is the only way I can see it working. There is no way in hell that belongs in multi-player!

Vehicles in Battlefield 3 have two new features. First is they now have regenerating armor. If it goes down below a certain threshold your vehicle will be disabled (you will see sparks) and not being able to move, although the turret can still move.

Maybe instead of handholding the driver the player should learn to fucking drive a tank and/or realize that no game will be 100% free of griefers? Just a thought.

There must be some specific situation for this, because they have a class devoted to essentially fixing vehicles. Would be weird to do both.

The vehicle shindig is still very, very vague at the moment. There seems to be an evolution in vehicle abilities and features in Battlefield 3, so i won't be judging just yet

This is outrageous! Look at how outraged I am!

Don't DICE kind of deal in well-balanced and enjoyable multiplayer? I'm sure this hasn't been done without any thought or testing behind it. I'm not exactly a Battlefield player, though, I'm basically just observing this from the outside - so feel free to tell me what's what.

From what this says it sounds like the regen mechanic sounds more like a fighting game, where you can only regen a set amount and the rest of the health is permanently lost (Until an engineer comes that is). As long as you're not taking a vehicle from 20 to 100 it doesn't sound too bad.

interesting, one of the most annoying things in bad company was people bailing out of tanks when they got below 40. maybe if they think they have a fighting chance they will stay in long enough to die.

@Bishna: that's the whole thing. It's going to be a lot harder to kill people in vehicles since they'll become "immobilized" before they die allowing them to get out

This sounds incredibly stupid but DICE certainly knows what its doing so I'll wait and see how it actually plays. Having played hundreds of hours of BC2 alone I never noticed issues with the durabiltiy of vehicles if the respective engineers know what they're doing. If you play in a reckless fashion you should be at a much higher risk so that concept doesn't sound good at all right now. We'll see how it turns out I guess.

@Meteora: since aiming and shooting targets is way easier in games (especially this one) than it is in real life, i think it's okay to make other things less realistic to make up for that.

Vehicle balancing will be key in BF3. It's no small feat, especially if classes remain similarly powerful as in BF:BC 2, where every kit except medic had AT capabilities. With 64 players, that's a tough design nut to crack.

As for the 'vehicle armor reg'. Nothing's cofirmed yet and likely it's a misconception. I heard something about 'rounding up to a full 5% after a while', so going from 21% up to 25% after a while. Guess that frees up some memory, which is a super scarce commodity on consoles - which is likely what this is about.

@Seppli:Uh.... it's not gonna be for memory. There's literally no difference between storing any number between 0 and 255, for example. Even if it mattered for performance, they coudn't do this because the game would begin to break down if there happened to be a lot of vehicles taking damage at the same time.

Whatever people want to boast about how "real" BF players always, 100% of the time have an invincible, completely attentive engineer superglued to their exhaust, I'd guess this is a concession to give drivers a bit more self-sufficiency. Also, whether a vehicle is alive or dead often makes a massive difference in the game, and this gives damaged vehicles a better chance to pull back and get repaired when things go bad. Thirdly, this could be in addition to vehicles maybe having their max armor and engineer repair speed brought down? It's fairly stupid that in BC2, tanks either die instantly without repair, or are completely invincible because they have an engineer poking them with a flashlight. Hopefully this brings things towards realism, with vehicles moving forward and fighting, then pulling back to get repaired.

Why is everyone raging so much about it ?

They said that only a small amount of armor will regenerate so you won't have to roll around with a critically damaged tank.

In real life , when a tank gets hit by a projectile but is still mobile , the crew inside will attempt to fix issues to keep that tank rolling.

Instead of bitching go read how tank crews work.

No, it's that having to put 3 rockets into a tank to kill it is hard enough, without the driver being able to just back behind a building and wait a few seconds before moving up and blowing you away. That's what people are worried about.

Part of the trade-off with taking a vehicle in BF is that you move faster, but also make yourself a more conspicuous target. They take away the risk and it sort of negates that balance. Whatever, I'm sure DICE are play-testing the hell out of it and know what they're doing.

This seems dumb. The only thing they need to sort out is that if you're the passenger in a helicopter and you have to bail out of bounds because the pilot is an idiot that shouldn't count as a suicide.

It is in the future, not far flung, but near enough to have regenerating shields on replica military vehicles or perhaps even aircrafts. Tanks are people too. And if you can time your forced landing right, you'd be able to go up in the sky to fight in no time.

Either way. IGN suffers from a misconception. There is no 'armor reg'. Some inner working has been explained by DICE to them and they've misconstrued that sentence out of it. At least according to the twitter account of Demize99, the lead weapon's balancing designer. It's something about rounding up or down to 5%. So take that how you will. This whole topic is built upon nonsense to begin with. And it's still work in progress. Nothing's been officially announced to begin with. It's pre-alpha and any information has to be taken with a grain of salt in the very least.

I think it was fine the way it was.

Also, the idea of a person recovering from an injury at least makes a serviceable amount of sense, but I've never heard of a tank fixing itself. Maybe someone in the tank is repairing it from the inside? (which would be a nice limiter, if you needed at least 1 passenger in order to regenerate the vehicle)

It's a balance tweak for god's sake. Apparently DICE doesn't deserve any trust and respect, despite their track record. :/

All the silly assumptions and panicky statements on every rumor that comes out of the mill about BF3 are getting to the point of hilarity.

That's why there's an engineer class...  to fix the vehicles...   Health regen on vehicles is ludicrous.
