Does it live up to the hype?
Battlefield 3. The most generic title. It actually is more generic than "Modern Warfare", They win the award for sure. But, how is the game? If you don't have internet for you console, Its bad. If you do (Like the other 7 million of us) its pretty good. This review is unbiased because I am not a BF nerd and never have been. I never played 1942 or any other up until BF BC.
The multiplayer, If you haven't heard already, is pretty amazing. The campaign... Not so much. I was looking forward to playing through an incredible story, I loved the previous ones, but they had flaws I had hoped they would fix. They did not. Gone is the open world feel that some of the earlier games had.You go where the game wants you to go. No questions. The strategy of flanking or changing any tactics is thrown out the window, because if you move just a little to much, the game snaps at your heels relentlessly, and a counter starts the clock to your doom. Another thing, This game is very difficult. Even on easy I got eradicated and executed tirelessly. That's not bad, but half the time it was felt like the games fault, not mine. Whether it was getting instantly killed for standing instead of going prone, or it was a strangely quick and accurate artillery strike when I went "Out of bounds". Also, frostbite had been toned down a lot. You will not be able to demolish buildings quite as nicely as before. Minor gripe.
It feels like they copied the MW formula and messed with it, to no avail. The campaign is a roller-coaster ride, except it has no loops. This is a shot in the dark and it missed. The plane has crashed. Understand? The Quick time events are thrown in...Like a shotgun blast. Even the poor helpless rat is not safe. Prepare to hit many buttons as you watch your movie play out in front of you. Not much fun, and it ends up feeling like you are hitting the play button over and over, instead of interacting with your environment and your enemies. The story is a mediocre, and is an unsatisfying short attempt at an adventure, and you may have a hard time even getting through it.
Now to the other stuff. The game has online co-op missions which are pretty good, but, still have some of the gripes that the Story mode had. A big gripe for me is, that I like getting together with my comrades and killing each other split screen. None of that. Not a surprise, but I was hoping for it, I mean, they do have a Co-op mode so...
The multiplayer is absolutely thrilling. The awe-inspiring landscapes are remarkable. If have not played this game yet, you have no idea how insanely fun it is flying majestically through the air in a jet, zipping around missile locks and eventually parachuting out. This is only a small part of this game. It has tanks, jeeps and of course, helicopters. The maps range from COD style meat grinders, to huge epic battles, where you can die, at most, four times. So much fun. The typical game types are back, Rush being a attack-defend style, and Conquest being capture the enemy bases and defend your own. Of course their is still TD and such. The games multiplayer, Dare I say it, may be superior to even the mighty Call of Duty. This is where the game shines, it stops pretending to be COD and embraces the BF style. Its too bad that COD will almost certainly destroy this game in sales. Its truly a massive multiplayer, and I wish more people went BF instead of COD.
BF nerds will love this, because they have been skipping Single player for years, but the rest of us will be disappointed by the games single player. However Online play is very impressive, and is worthy of your time, and trust me you will be losing a lot of your life span to this.
