DICE is smart to include Battlefield 1943 on PS3

Smart move indeed, trying to keep their "on the side" downloadable stuff played and populated :)  That should get a few thousand players back into 1943.

I would kill for a BF3: 1942 expansion pack btw.

Including it to the PC version would have been the real smart move, but that's only because they canned it from digital download. :P

On the PS3 version of Battlefield 3, on the same Bluray disc in fact, Battlefield 1943 is being included for no extra charge. In my opinion, this was a great snag for Sony, as BF1943 is one of the best downloadable games on the Playstation Network, and still one of my favorite online games. I think this will give the game a fresh breath of life and will see a whole new community get involved. My only concern is that many players will skip over this great addition, it being overshadowed by Battlefield 3's multiplayer. I certainly hope that isn't the case. Great business decision on Sony's end, and thank you to DICE for allowing more people to experience this great game with no barrier to entry. If anyone is still active on BF1943, feel free to add me on PSN. Just send me a PM if you want to play.

Everyone who has wanted to play this game already owns it. Sure a few people will try it and find out they love it, but I hardly see it as a big deal.

But who's going to spend time on 1943 when BF3 is right there ready to play? I know I wouldn't.

Also, at this point, it'd be futile to try to bring 1943 to PC. That ship has sailed.

The ship has never sailed on a chance to play 1942 with the latest Frostbite tech!

BF3 may bring in a lot of new players to the franchise on consoles. Those players may have skimmed over 1943 when it released, but after being drawn into the franchise with 3, they may give it a try.

I agree though, it is more or less just a bulletpoint on the back of the box. Maybe someone on the fence between the two console versions will be swayed because, well, why not?

Yeah, I own 1943 for the PS3 already. Also DICE is the development studio. It is funny. Always when something good happens it is credited to the developer. Bad news > publisher. Clearly this is a business decision, and I doubt DICE had any say in this - and why should they, it involves no development work. Sony paid EA a certain amount of money, so they could get a differentiator for their system. Since 1943, and likely its sales, are pretty much meaningless now, they probably could get this "exclusive" at a bargain price. This by far does not have the magnitude of the Dead Space 2 deal.

I really hoped they would said something like: "Hey we will open up the bandwidth limitations for the PS3 version of BF3, like we did with MAG, so you can have e.g. 32 (16 vs 16) player matches." Well, this was unlikely since DICE wouldn't had the time to make 24, 32 and 64 player versions of all the maps.

Since I might get this on PS3 (fuck Origin), I would have preferred some actual new DLC. Heck even just some cosmetic changes etc.

I think it is more good for the PS3 than for Dice.  I know as somebody that owns both systems that if I am looking at two identical items and one has something extra for free I usually go ahead and get the free thing.  I already own Battlefield 1943 on the 360 and I don't even play it much but I will probably get the PS3 version because it adds a little value that isn't there on the 360 version.

If not already mentioned before, a big draw would be BF3 players trying to lure more BF1943 players who don't have BF3 to switch ship.

Yes it has. DICE already confirmed a while back that they have taken the team who was doing BF1943 PC into the BF3's development process. No BF1943 for PC.

I meant in general. Just because BF1943 is gone, doesn't mean a Frostbite 2.0 treatment of 1942 is gone. It is NEVER futile to bring Wake Island back with WWII weapons and vehicles.

Why the fuck would you play 1943 when you could be playing Battlefield 3? It wasn't a "snag" by Sony, they just gobbled up the scraps.

Sony could have gotten a much better exclusive, like increased playercount on the PS3 or something like that.

Aren't they remaking wake island for BF3? That makes a 1/3 of 1943 worthless pretty much

Not when the PS3 is the system with the least memory. The PS3 versions of BF:BC 1 & 2 and BF 1943 struggle the most with framerate and freezes and crashes and blurry textures and effects and such. Maybe different with Frostbite 2 though, since it employs a completely different overall rendering method. Frostbite 2 certainly looks pretty and smooth with outstanding dynamic lighting in the NFS : The Run trailer for PS3.

More like Sony is smart for paying DICE to include BF1943 on the BF3 disc. DICE isn't just throwing it on there because there's unused space on the Blu-Ray.

The game has been out for two years. Nearly every Battlefield fan has played the game by now. And even if they hadn't, why would they consider even playing more than one or two games of 1943 when they've just bought the biggest, rawest first-person shooter on the market? Sony has wasted money, I believe. They should have paid EA to include exclusive skins or maps, or some sort of Vita connectivity.

I will probably end up going the PC route. More people to shoot at. Besides I have played every BF game since 1942.. and the most fun was on the PC versions. Really should have went with an exclusive bump in player count. I mean if MAG handled 256 as well as it did, you would think 64 or at very least 32 would be a go.

I liked the inclusion of Dead Space Extraction on PS3 and I bought it on PS3 but I also bought it for the single disk. This inclusion is not for me since I already own BF1943 on PS3. I think as the other poster said bigger maps or a bigger player count would have been a much better win for Sony. Its not quite the same as Dead Space but its a nice inclusion but its still picking between two lesser versions of the game.

Those are two entirely different ships. 1943 is certainly not 1942 and it does not use the latest Frostbite tech. If they hadn't decided to avoid mod support, you could have bet your britches the community would make such a thing a reality.
