Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is the second installment in this spin-off Battlefield series. It has a more serious campaign and a vastly expanded multiplayer system.
Can you fly helicopters in Battlefield?
THE UAV DOES NOT COUNT! It does not handle like actual helicopters
Helicopters in Battlefield games are notoriously tough to handle. Ive played games where all people do is drive them into cliffs (My preferred strategy), I've also played games where a well trained player in a Cobra can tear the entire enemy team to pieces, single handed-ly.
I got a fair amount of experience in BF2 with ferrying troops in Blackhawks, but all of that has been lost to me in Bad Company 2. I was wondering how you guys fair with these fancy contraptions.
I did pretty decently with the gunships and air transports in 2142, but no such luck with these birds. I think I'm at the "almost a non-crashing entity" stage of my pilot-hood, but I haven't gotten much further than that. I'm trying to set up a Saitek X52 flight stick to make things easier, but I need to figure out to invert all the controls before it becomes much of an asset. Right now, left and right are reversed and the throttle control can only be used to ascend or descend, not both.
So no. I do not fly. I wobble precariously.
Too bad they can't just simplify them to the controls of a Banshee in Halo if they aren't going to bother with helicopter tutorials like there was for planes in Bf:1943. I was a beast in the helicopter in the first Bf:BC, but I was lucky that it was a demo I learned and I joined a server that eventually everyone left but me and I just used that as my time to learn since I think it's utterly selfish to try and learn in a full room. Took me a good 25 minutes to fly and land without crashing (if the helicopter spawned faster it probably would of took half the time to learn).
I can, i love the new control scheme, plus that level that screenshot is from pissed me off to no end ¬¬ it took me like 5 trys because I kept blowing the sides of the truck off so i didn't accidentally kill myself with the GL and then realised that without the sides i die repeatedly due to the chopper at the end ¬¬
I've always been a helicpter pilot in Battlefield games and if there is a helicopter on the map then I'm flying it. I've flown them in BF2, 2142 and Bad Company 1
The best helicopters were in 2142, futuristic helis without the spinning blades
I can usually fly the same chopper an entire game without having to switch
I can fly helicopters, it's just that I don't normally fly helicopters. I can do it well enough for my team to score some kills, but if it was a dogfight, I'd resort to kamikaze tactics and simply suicide run the problem. I enjoy flying, but it's difficult to do well. I can hover for my teammates in the UH-64 Blackhawk to mini-gun the problems and stuff, but I would definitely not be your go-to pilot. I'd see myself more as a wheelman and mechanic due to the fact I try to repair my team's vehicles, and I like speeding around. Using the Humvee and speeding around off road is a particularly fun activity for me.
But my favorite helicopter in Bad Company 2 is the Mi-24 Hind, I think it's called.
" Yes. I'm a good helicopter pilot. "yup, thanks to being a BF2 addict i can fly a helo just fine .
My BFBC2 doesnt like my x52Pro setup, all the axes are reversed and even though i intentionally bind them in reverse, it doesnt help. so no i cant fly for shit in bfbc2 but i can ILS to singapore in a monsoon with 0 visibility in Flight Simulator just fine.
:/ hope they fix, but they have a ton of shit to fix before that.
I think the choppers are much easier to handle in this game. That doesn't mean that any of the people who get in them can actually fly them, of course. I wish they had some kind of off-line training mode.
No, I'm absolutely horrendous at flying them. Not that anybody I get in a chopper with is any better, but I'd rather not be the reason four of my comrades died.
" I could fly the transport ship in BF2142 underneath bridges, that was always pretty sick. "I flew a Blackhawk under one of Wake Island 2007's bridges in BF2, it was a big moment for me.
And in BF 2, black-hawks were damn hard to take down, in this game they get shredded with ease by enemy gunfire.
" @ImperiousRix: This is the pilot. We have a little problem with our flight sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then - explode. "Exactly, or you get in thinking the pilot's gonna do some sorta sweeping run, then all of a sudden they go barrelling into the ground and blow up the heli. I blame that damn achievement you get by running over somebody with a helicopter.
" @Alphiehyr said:Imagine being in a chopper when you realize the pilot is dead......... thats as sucky as things can get in Battlefield haha." I wonder if it's possible to get shot through the visor while in the chopper. "I've sniped 5 pilots and tons of gunners myself. Sniping pilots is always as funny as you imagine it to be. "
" @Pinworm45 said:Yeah 3 of the times I did it I got multi kills." @Alphiehyr said:Imagine being in a chopper when you realize the pilot is dead......... thats as sucky as things can get in Battlefield haha. It actually happened to me once. I was a gunner when the pilot was killed somehow. So I just hit f5 and then flew around getting assists from my spawning-gunners getting kills. I like to think that a sniper shot the pilot and was all proud of his work, and I ruined his day by making his efforts in vain.
I actually haven't gotten into the Bad Company games, but if they're anything like the ones in BF2 then yes.
Was able to fly blackhawks and attack choppers under bridges, inside the bow of the aircraft carrier etc. Could do loop-the-loops and barrel rolls with the blackhawk as well.
Nothing was funner than jumping in a blackhawk full of people on an aircraft carrier, then doing a barrel roll over the water. 3/4 of the people got shitscared and thought I sucked and was going to crash. They'd bail out over water, I'd complete the roll, and then fly off to the mainland.
" @Pinworm45 said:If history in gaming has taught us anything, choppers in multiplayer games are difficult to drive and are in concise amounts. As you've said: "I've sniped 5 pilots and tons of gunners myself". Looks like putting all the effort into waiting for a chopper to spawn, starting it up and just to get shot down by a sniper really isn't worth it. Then again, I haven't played it so I won't know." @Alphiehyr said:Imagine being in a chopper when you realize the pilot is dead......... thats as sucky as things can get in Battlefield haha. It happened to me once that the dipshit flying the chopper went outside the combat zone and forgot how to go back, thus forcing the passengers to bail out in mid-air and suicide." @Jeffk38uk said:

Yes, game, it was an "epic fail". On his part, not mine.
" I'm not a good one. But my faith in humanity is restored when you see 4 people waiting next to a Blackhawk for someone to put their hand up and say ... I WILL FLY THIS HELICOPTER GOOD SIR, GET IN. "Yea, im the guy who jumps ahead of that group and goes "Wow your idiots, im going to show you how its done, cant be that hard to fly!" They follow me into the helicopter, next thing you know its upside down and on fire in what used to be somebody's shed......

According to my Battlefield 2 stats I have 53h 18m 18s of time in helicopters, the majority of that being in the pilots seat...so yes, I can fly these helicopters.
I'm not that bad at flying them. My biggest piss off is when the heli pilots can't keep the damn thing steady. I'm sure if I tried to fly them more often I'd easily get really good but seeing as I pilot them once every 15 matches it probably won't happen. I barely drive any vehicle though, I love being the gunner.
Oh, and nice screenshot!
