Apparently, according to Reddit through Kotaku, it'll be set in an alternate-history version of during WW1. Release date is set for October 21st, 2016 (or the 18th if you preorder).

Some quick points I gathered from the post-video interview:

• Close combat is being expanded with new systems and a wide variety of new weapons (Sword bayonets, maces, spades/shovels etc)
• Cavalry and mounted combat are in
• Playable battleships are mentioned by the lead producer, implying naval battles (like Jutland?) or amphibious landings (Gallipoli?) could be a part of the game
• Weapon customization is back, with new ways to modify guns, details forthcoming
• Flamethrowers and chemical warfare will be a part of the game, although how was not stated

All things told, I'm definitely excited for this.

I thought it was going to be Battlefield 1, set in 1AD. Romans vs. Christians or something.

Battlefield: Harlem Hellfighters is a much cooler name.

From that picture I can only gather that I will be playing as Commander Shepard during WW1 on Earth.

I am very excited. I am expecting the "alternate" part will accelerate some of the technology a few years ahead to allow the more typical Battlefield gameplay. But setting wise this is a big improvement for my interest levels over another modern or sci-fi shooter.

Yeah in my case, I love historical settings for shooters, so this should be what I'm down with. Except, the one thing I like less than sci-fi is steampunk (and derivatives thereof)

We don't know anything yet but really hope it doesn't lead in that direction. On the plus side, dude in the picture is holding a Mauser C96 pistol which is a real period-appropriate gun

Two things first why are they still using the generic Bf3 sparks background second there already was a BF1 game name it something else. This series really went to shit after BF2 to me BF2 will always be the best once they went on consoles they dumbed down there gameplay to appeal to COD fans. I really want this game to be good but I'm sure it will be the same old same.

Welp, Kotaku amended their story since it was posted. Apparently they don't know whether it'll be alternate history or not, they just assumed. I'm just gonna sit tight and edit after the announcement stream is done

If it really is about the Harlem Hellfighters, they missed an opportunity to call it Battlefield: Hellfighters. Although people could think the new Battlefield would be a Doom crossover or something. Still, I bet there's better names than Battlefield 1.

Hm, could be interesting. But, my god, was that a stupid fucking build-up to nothing. Does marketing shit like this somehow subversively work? Or do they just not get that cheaply blowing the hype out of proportion has to at least be followed up by something substantial.

Nice trailer though, I really enjoy the distorted sound/ artillery moment. If they get back to punchy gunplay and not this CoD-derivative BF 3/4 nonsense I might be back in.

I like it. WW1 wasn't all trench warfare so I don't think it will be static.

+ I get to be the Red Baron. (well, that might actually be real like the heroes in Battlefront)

Other than that, it was a cool trailer, I'm curious about this game now. But was it worth it all of this hype, stream and keynote? Hell no! Marketing people are getting uncreative.

Really hope so, boarding a flying zeppelin was one of my favorite things to do in their Battlefield precursor Codename: Eagle.

Or a Tommy with a Lee-Enfield, that'd be super dope as well. I haven't been into this idea of a AAA FPS since CoD 2, I really dig the idea of historical shooters and hope this one isn't alternate history.

...that said I'm kinda doubtful I'm going get this until ages after it's out, at a discount, and by that time I might have forgotten about it.

I really like the look and the bold direction of setting but if they do that Battlefront bullshit of releasing a game with barely any content at full price, you can count me out.

The trailer was really nice, but at least a tiny smidgen of gameplay would have been a lot nicer. I'm glad it's turned out to be a historical setting for something a little fresh these days, and to serve as a contrast to COD's future hysteria. It should really just be called Battlefield 5 though.

That trailer is awful, but at least they appear to be doing something slightly unique. I hope they actually try to differentiate if from previous Battlefield games, though. It would be a real shame if it ended up playing like a re-skinned, prettier version of 1942.

Please, for the love of all that is right in this world, change the name of this game, EA and DICE. I already had to explain to customers a million times why Madden 15 was newer than Madden 25, and I really don't want to have to explain to anyone why Battlefield 1 is newer than Battlefield 4.

Hell, I'm already sick of trying to explain to people that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is not newer than Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.

Apparently the destruction is crazier than ever. Seems like buildings can be destroyed, big and small, and the ground can even be blown apart.

Also, looking at the game, I love the color used. Nice to see a period shooter with color.

Another bit: sounds like 4 classes. Assault, Medic (they're split again, wooo), Scout, Support.

And there are dedicated vehicle classes, like a pilot. So you spawn right into the vehicle I believe. I think this is a good change that hopefully doesn't waste vehicles how they can be some in these games.

I'm all for using periods of history that haven't really been done before, and WWI is a refreshing change from "modern military bros," but I am very curious how they're going to pull this off in a way that makes the gameplay fun without also making the time period feel completely incongruous. Because off the top of my head, I can only think of a few things you can do with a WWI FPS:

1. A NPC officer yelling "Over the top!" followed immediately by you getting sawn in half by a machine gun.

2. "Press X to put on gas mask"

3. "Trench Foot Simulator 2016"

Also, they better have a black and white mode where everything moves super-fast like it was shot at 16fps.

And dubstep needs to f-ing stop. Right now. Just go back in time and erase it.

After the messes BF games have been since 3 (still salty bout 4's netcode), chalk this down as Battlefield 1 game I'm not buying.
