Sega held their "Feel Bayonetta" demo event in Tokyo today, in which they gave 300 members the gaming public ample hands on experience of PlatinumGames Kamiya produced action fest.

After the first of three play sessions of the E3 09 demo, director Hideki Kamiya and producer Yusuke Hashimoto took the time to speak about the game in some detail, it was then that they mentioned to the press attending that Sega and PlatinumGames plan to release a demo for the game:

"We're currently hard at work on it"

 - Hashimoto-san

Hashimoto-san then said something quite interesting:

"It will be more than just a demo that's pulled from the middle of the game. We'd like to make it so that those who've already bought the game will make new discoveries if they play the demo."

What could he possibly mean I wonder, whatever it is I do like the idea of doing something of this sort, rewarding those that have been eager to play this wild looking game. / Kamiya's next masterpiece.

Really? Seems like a DMC mod where you play as a sexy librarian.

In gameplay terms, I agree-ish. But it's fucking bonkers in every other aspect. Have you seen some of the bosses?
#6 Posted by Linkyshinks (9880 posts) -

There are a load of gameplay concepts that are entirely new in this game. The suggestion that this is some sort of re-shelled DMC, from the creator of DMC. is far off the mark.

This title will breath new life into the genre, because Kamiya has designed it to.

Breath of fresh air? What? It looks like Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, Heavenly Sword, all those stupid beat em up action games.

So you're saying a boss design is a fresh of breath air? A boss could look like the most badass crazy thing in the world, but what it comes down to is you mashing buttons and draining his life gauge. I doubt you will have to plug your controller in slot2 or something like that.
#9 Edited by get2sammyb (6412 posts) -
@CowMuffins: @TheMustacheHero: I'm talking about the aesthetics. The way it looks, the character designs, the whole art aspect of the game is unlike anything I've ever seen before. I used the bosses as an example, but it still looks unlike anything else I've seen before. By all hands-on play test accounts, it's not as close to DMC as people are making out.

I stand by my initial statement. It's a breath of fresh air. Particularly when you look at something like Dante's Inferno and God Of War III. To be fair, the latter of which is at least building on a formula of its own. But Dante's Inferno is shameless.

Regardless there's going to be a host of these action-style beat 'em ups early next year, and I think Bayonetta is by a country-mile the most original of the lot. So yes, it's a breath of fresh air.

You have obviously don't know anything about Bayonetta, or hack 'n slash-style action games in general. Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry and Heavenly sword are very different games(Ninja Gaiden in particular).

Cool,I love demo's.I'm sure I'll get this when it comes out,but I'll have top wait and see if I like it more than Ninja Gaiden II Sigma.I loved NGII on 360 and with all the new features they are adding to the PS3 one I think it's gonna rawk my sawks off.But yea,Bayonetta definately looks badass.

That's like saying Burnout Paradise is uninteresting because Big Rigs was bad. Devil May Cry 2 was fucking horrible -- a disgrace to the DMC name, and the action genre as a whole. Bayonetta is nothing like that game.

I've read interviews, hands-on previews and dev diaries. I have seen concept art, screenshots and gameplay videos. The game is being directed by Hideki Kamiya(Devil May Cry, Okami, Viewtiful Joe 1&2), and plenty of ex-Clover members are working on the game(as is the cutscene director from Devil May Cry 3).

I think I know enough about the game to make an approximate judgment of it's quality. Even if the game is waaaay below my expectations, it'll still be a thousand times better than DMC2.

Bayonetta is like interactive softcore pornography to me. It also brings a new level of action in gaming.
I can't wait to play it.

I don't know man, it looks like a DMC clone in every possible way. Though DMC is not a bad game to copy so this might turn out to be pretty good. It even looks like they are sticking very close to the DMC4 combat system, which was the best part of that game.

What's DMC 2 got to to with this game, Kamiya had no role in making that rubbish

PlatinumGames and Kamiya, who is known not to be happy with the product he once created, sticking to a combat system in another game made by Capcom, by another producer : ? LOL

Her neck is über long and freaky. She looks wrong, not really sure how to explain it. The game does look pretty retarded, especially the rocket launchers on the feet. Even if the gameplay was very good I still wouldn't buy it since I really don't like the main character and the atmosphere.

#29 Edited by punkxblaze (2971 posts) -

Bayonetta rubs me the wrong way, gameplay completely aside. Something about the aesthetic of it bothers me. In the same way that I can't stand to play Dead or Alive games, this seems like a shameless attempt to pander to the typical LOL BEWBS IN MAH VIDJA GAMES crowd. Now, mind you, I'm not saying that IS the mentality behind the game, but it falls close enough to that territory for me to not take too vested an interest in it.

Also, as the above poster stated, her costume and general design just looks sort of dumb. There's "Damn, son, that shit is mad japanese and WACKY!", and then there's "Really? Trying too hard.". This is the latter.

#30 Posted by Seedofpower (3928 posts) -

Man, they are really pushing this whole sex thing. "Feel Bayonetta" It just makes it seem that the gameplay will be lacking and they want to cover it up with something "shiny."

Yeah, I saw the game-play vids but I've been stung by hack and slashes before so I'll wait for the review.

All you people who complain about the T&A... seriously? The game's art direction is fantastic -- the environments and enemies are intricate, detailed and colorful. Yet you look past all this and get hung up on the T&A, going all "oh no bewbs this game must suck".

The sexiness in this game is not a cheap marketing trick like in X-Blades and Dead or Alive Extreme... it's just Kamiya's over-the-top character design. He has created Dante, designed to be extremely "cool", Joe, designed to be extremely "beautiful", and now he has created a character designed to be extremely "sexy". That's is just the way his characters are.

Read some of the Bayo-Blogs and check out some gameplay videos and interviews . If you've done that and still think they're doing the sex appeal thing to cover up lacking gameplay, you don't deserve to play the game.

I don't think anyone who's negatively reacted to the 'sexy' visual aesthetic (including myself) in this topic has accused it of compensating for lacking gameplay. We've simply stated that it doesn't suit our individual tastes. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. It looks like a decent game, it just feels like it's going a bit overboard with the cheesecake value.

In that case, sorry. It just seems to me that the complainers think this is like X-Blades, and well... it's not. I can understand if the game is a bit too ridiculously over-the-top for some people though... I mean the game cranks everything up to 11, including cheesiness.

DMC2 is the stylish action baby that should have been aborted and should be completely left out of any discussion pertaining to the hack and slash genre forever because it shouldn't exist.

They failed pretty hard with the sexy part then. Bayonetta doesn't look good at all and it all feels very forced.

@Gargantuan: I agree, I don't find Bayonetta attractive at all. But it seems there are plenty of people who think she's über-hot... to each his own, I guess.
#41 Edited by Linkyshinks (9880 posts) -

The term "hack n slash" gives the impression it's mindless button mashing, that's why people who choose to dismiss such games use it the term often. The fact is however. games like Ninja Gaiden and DMC have a great deal of depth to the combat, they require the learning of complex combos and blocking and attacking in a almost rhythmic fashion, They are tough games that are great fun (excluding some DMC's), and that's why they continue to be popular to this day.

I guess you've never played the great GOD HAND (-Clover Studios, now PlatinumGames), and seen firsthand the merits of what you call cheesecake.

I think her character design is cool, she has that whole S&M goth thing going on, and I love her elongated limbs and the athleticism they give her character. I also like her evil Okami incarnation, when she turns into a black panther, and how she summons demons with her hair. Everything else about the style appeals to me a great deal, I think the quality of art is exceptionally good. I have rarely seen environments and NPC's look so alive looking in such a game.

It's awesomely garish and knows it's a videogame...

Your better off waiting 2 months more and getting a full grasp of the story and comedy.  It's out in October in Japan, and arrives in NA and Europe in January.

This is most certainly a game I am waiting to see turn out to be something a lot of people have claimed it is. I don't blame some of the dissenters against Bayonetta, while certain aspects of the game look great the most we have seen pumped out in trailers and gameplay clips has been essentially what looks like a DMC mod with a character swap. I'm hoping to see some re-focused advertising here.

Yes, I get it. She's hot. The character herself is pretty kinda attractive, in a bizzaree Sarah Palin-ish-librarian-sorta-way. Let's not make what is visually obvious the sole selling point here.

And regarding DMC2: NO! We are not comparing anything to that pile of garbage. DMC2 is not at all a legitimate example of the DMC franchise. I rented it once and there will never be a place on my shelf for that terrible, terrible game.

I said, good, day!

I didn't care for it. XD

Jason Sudekis was right. She really does look like Sarah Palin. At least the hair.

I love DMC and all that good stuff but I've failed to see what all the fuss has been about for this game from the start? Does it really look like a good game or is it just because you play as a hot chick whose practically naked 90% of the time?

#50 Posted by Linkyshinks (9880 posts) -

It has nothing at all to do with the character : /, since when has a Kamiya game been shallow rubbish? (-RE2, Okami, VJ, DMC), if you go onto the official forums you will soon realise why fans of his games are excited. There's a ton of info there on every aspect of it's design, which is all innovative as his past games.
