JEANNE

Jeanne, like Bayonetta, is an Umbra Witch. Like Bayonetta, she fights against angels.  Jeanne's intentions in pursuing Bayonetta are unclear, but she does appear to have knowledge of Bayonetta's mysterious past, a past which Bayonetta herself does not know but seeks...

RIVALS

RODIN

Rodin runs The Gates of Hell, a bar in the slum area. When he's not serving drinks, he's assembling weapons for Bayonetta, although the exact reason for his show of support is unclear.  "Your fights are yours alone. I'm only here to watch my handiwork in action."  - Rodin

ENZO

Enzo profits by making use of his vast network of information sources. The information he provides Bayonetta will help her unravel the mysteries of her past.  "At least let me get a drink at Rodin's before you start drilling me." - Enzo

LUKA

Luka is a freelance journalist who follows Bayonetta around. He's not just a mild mannered reporter, though, as he can make use of a grapple hook that's attached to his sleeve to leap into the heart of the action.  "I'm not your pet. The name is Luka. A name you better remember!." - Luka

CEREZA

A cute little girl who does not appear to be from the area. How she got into the heavily patrolled town is a mystery. She meets Bayonetta under as yet unrevealed circumstances and ends up calling her "Mummy."  "Mummy is a witch, and witches protect people and are very strong." - Cereza

Very cool post, I love the art design for this game.

She is. I think elongated is a better term to use though. All her limbs are significantly long, they're almost cat like. It means that some of the wild acrobatic moves she has look far more feasible, than they would otherwise.

Badass, though I always thought the "Tiger Within" transformation was a black panther. You know, what with it being black and all. The body structure is off, too; it looks a lot more like a panther than a tiger.

There's some debate about that, I went with a Japanese sources suggestion it was a Tiger. I wanted to go with Jaguar myself.

I know... I will change it to kitty for now.

edit;

I think it could be a black Jaguar looking at various pics of the species...but then those are mistaken for Panthers... I will go with Panther for now :)

Villains remind of Godhand, by their OTT presentation and such, then again IIII think the people behind DMC also had some influence to Godhand aswell so no surprise there could be similarities.

The games definitely taken some inspiration from God Hand on the evidence of the few lol worthy cut scenes I've seen.

The plot sounds pretty fucked up, I mean, seeing that intro sequence they were waiting for angels to show up and take someone's soul for some reason? Then she started slaying those same angels? Wut? Joy looks like will be a Bayonetta doppelganger?

The art direction looks really awesome. It just reminds me of how great an art direction the first Devil May Cry had, yet due to the graphical power of the PS2, the details were sometimes obscure (Dante's devil triggers, for example, were difficult to see). This just makes me even more excited for the game, the art direction can really go places thanks to the graphical power of the PS3/360.

Nah, the cars are just enemies. Though when I think about it, a chick who can transform into a car would be pretty awesome...

Dear folks, what is it about Bayonetta that you like? I keep seeing videos and screens and not once has it impressed me. Not in its graphics, not in its voice acting, not in its creatures or design.

What's wrong with me??

What's wrong with you is that you need to provoke people by asking them things like that, as all it takes is common sense. What you don't like (the graphics, the voice acting, the creatures or design), they like. It hits their sweet spot. Why's that hard to accept, and simply move on from?

This game seems awesome. I enjoy Devil May Cry, so this looks up my alley.
Bayonetta looks pretty disturbing though. It didn't really click with me what threw me off about her until you mentioned her "elongated limbs".

@Al3xand3r:
Dude, its not like that. Its just everytime I see or read something new on this game I'm just like "Oh, okay, more Bayonetta stuff. Cool."

What do you guys really see in the game. Are you guys fan of hack n slash, or Devil May Cry, or what? What is it about the character that is so bad ass n stuff.
#22 Posted by Icemael (6271 posts) -
@Emilio: If you don't see what people love about this game, chances are you never will. Most likely, it's just not your type of game. This is what I see in Bayonetta.

Yes I came to realize that, which is why I posted the Wikipedia link. I thought they might be a different genus.

A black panther is a large black cat. Black panthers are (melanistic) color variants of several species of larger cat. Wild black panthers in Latin America are black jaguars (Panthera onca), in Asia and Africa they are black leopards (Panthera pardus), and in North America reported black panthers may be black jaguars or possibly black cougars (Puma concolor – although this has not been proven to have a black variant), or smaller cats

@Emilio:

I wrote this in reply to another member yesterday:  (apol- locked bold)

Bayonetta has TONS of innovation!, you clearly seem to be passing this off as some DMC clone, while I and others who have read everything about the game here, know that could not be further from the truth. Hideki Kamiya made this game to intentionally push the action genre forward, it was a primary goal of the development team to revitalize the genre with this game. That  team have been unhappy with where the genre has laid in the hands of Capcom who own the DMC franchise.

PlatinumGames, formerly Clover Studios, was formed specifically to provide exciting and innovative games that would appeal to Western market, above it's very own.

Bayonetta's a very exciting and fresh project, which aims to be a hallmark game for the studio, it will remind us Westerners why Clover Studio was awesome, and why in it's new incarnation, PlatinumGames, it 's even more awesome.

Just wait on the reviews, you should expect to read these three words closely tied together in the bulk of them - Hideki Kamiya Masterpiece. The game will be up there with his other games, Okami, Viewtiful Joe and DMC.

The game sold out within hours in both Yodabashi stores! (huge). Kamiya-san is happy that it has. He's finding the fact they're selling Okami alongside it on the shelves very funny.

I think this means he's happy, but sad also

Awesome looking game; the demo is a blast to play through with all the different over-the-top moves :) Anybody else notice that her shadow doesn't accurately reflect her body? While running her shadow shows extended butterfly wings even though the wings don't show on the body itself. Thought that was a neat touch. Thanks for all the pics and videos Linkyshinks!

Shame that the game is region protected [on 360] as I needed a new game for the fall as all my other anticipated titles were moved to 2010.

There's a story behind the butterfly wings when she jumps, and her shadow - "Madama Butterfly"  (- a grand witch or demon) endowed her with magical powers after she made some sort of pact with her.
#33 Posted by Icemael (6271 posts) -

That piece of backstory is really neat. If I'm not mistaken, the arms and legs Bayonetta summons belong to Madame Butterfly as well.

The first day sales figures are in, Japanese blogger Sinobi has provided them.

In a country where on a bad day the PS3 outsells the XBOX 360 10 -1, the 360 figures are impressive:

  • The PS3 version - 93,000 units
  • The 360 version - 45,000 units
#35 Posted by Al3xand3r (7574 posts) -

Well deserved, if only they had this kind of backing for their past titles also. Better late than never.

Not bad at all for a first week in Japan.  I wonder how it'll do in the long run.

That's awesome! The game's already doing well in sales on the first day alone. Hopefully sales will continue to be high. I wonder how many pre-orders have already been placed for other countries.

From Hideki Kamiya's Japanese Bayo Blog:

Hideki Kamiya here… I bought an iPod touch thinking, “I can use this to screw around on the internet while laying in bed!” So I hopped into bed all excited only to find out that it doesn’t support the security settings on my router, and I am too lazy to change the settings. Thus, I am in bed laying like a sea otter with my heavy laptop on top of me. BTW – Why is the theme to Ōedo Untouchables (Ōedo Sōsamō) so damn cool? I’ve got it on heavy rotation.

It seems that silver members can finally download the Bayonetta demo, so I think lots of people are playing it now. However, lately I’ve been hearing a lot of comments that say “skipping these cutscenes is a pain in the butt!” We put selecting skip into the pause menu to make sure someone wouldn’t accidently skip the cutscenes, but there is also a “Quick Skip” in the game as well, so those playing over and over can access the skip function faster. (Please figure out the command yourself though.) Also, I’ve been hearing people say that the “Item Window” when you get a new item is annoying. The thing is, you only see it the first time you get that item, and there aren’t that many items that even trigger that window, so those of you who are going to play the hell out of the game don’t have anything to worry about in the final version.

What else… Oh yeah… There have been a lot of questions about secrets in the game. I’m sure that if we revealed all of these before the game came out, it would have a positive knock-on effect for sales of the game (LOL); however, for all of those looking forward to playing the game themselves, let’s keep the secrets of the game secret.

So I didn’t report this one to you all in a timely manner, but the other day, Hashimoto and I went to film the “Famitsu Live Special -Bayonetta-!” It was aired on October 10, so I think some of you may have watched it. However, for those of you who didn’t catch it, it should be being rebroadcast on famitsu.com around the time this blog is posted. I hope you get a chance to check it out.

Hashimoto and I have really never been apart of a live broadcast before, so we were worried beforehand about what the heck we were actually going to be doing. However, looking back, we were relaxed and able to talk freely for the entire session, thus it was a fun filming experience. I’m sure there were tons of people watching from home, but since I couldn’t see their faces or their reactions, compared to a stage event, I was rather settled down for this one. Of course, this was also thanks to the Famitsu editorial staff, as well as all the other people involved in the program’s production, creating a relaxed environment for the filming.

I’d especially like to thank the host of the show, Iccho Mori-san! Iccho-san was on a show during E3 and came to the SEGA booth for an E3 report. That show ended up with him becoming the genius behind the “Ahh… Bayonetta! Bayonetta! Bayonetta!” meme. (LOL) Thus, I’ve been really wanting to meet him. For the filming this time, he came wearing the exact same clothes he was wearing for the E3 report, and I was really impressed by his enthusiasm. Even during filming, he helped us not sound like dunces, and I am really happy he was able to create such a welcoming atmosphere for our conversation. He is truly a pro, you know… Comparing the two is a bit insulting, but our Bayo TV show is crappy by comparison… LOL. While filming, we were able to see the chat comments of people watching the show in real-time, as they were being played on a monitor one after another, and I was affixed to that screen the entire time. At first there were some pointed comments; however, the second half of the show was livelier, and I think we were able to jive with the viewers.

I’ve reached a point where I am able to share my thoughts on things on blogs or in magazine interviews; however, words on the page can have a different nuance, and video can be edited, so there are times when they tend to invite misunderstanding. Yet, with this filming, people were able to see me just talking, and it was truly refreshing. As an adult, there are plenty of times where you “can’t say that,” but since I’m just a big kid, I like to push the limits with my real thoughts as much as possible (LOL). If I get another chance like this, you can believe that I will be more than happy to take that opportunity.

Oh yeah… The web radio show that Hashimoto and I were on, Gaming Dinner Table (Game no Shoku) is in the process of being aired now. In all four parts, Hashimoto and I were pretty much ourselves on this program as well, so if you are interested, please give it a listen.

Finally, since we seem to be plugging shows, on Bayonetta’s release day in Japan, 10/29/2009, I will be appearing live on a web game show called Geccha, so I will be heading to Tokyo. As of writing this, I have no idea what the show will be about, but since it is the release date and all, I want to do my best to make it a fun program (from an amateur’s point of view, of course).

So as we close in to the Japanese release, there is lots of stuff going on, so please check out The Gates of Hell section on the official Bayonetta website, as it is being updated daily. (NOTE: This content is in Japanese.)

Until next time!

Colonel Kilgore was my squad leader in Nam... I saw him skinned alive by guerrilla pygmies & I later purchased a pair of boots sewn from his sternum.
