What the hell!? (First impressions of Bayonetta.)

Posted by GunstarRed (5211 posts) -

Today I recieved my Japanese import copy of Bayonetta in the post and nothing, NOTHING could have prepared me for the high levels of insanity I was about to witness.

and I have seen a lot of anime... A LOT!

Boring stuff out of the way

* The game really  does have some wonky Textures, framerate and strangely low definition graphics on the PS3
* there seems to  be a few sound issues here and there.
* camera is  a little all over the place during the more platformy/puzzle sections
* Horribly long loading times (up to 30 seconds  after dying)

strangest thing...

* A japanese copy of the game automatically defaults to english... menus, subtitles...everything It makes me wonder why the game isn't out in the rest of the world already.... probably one of the most import friendly games ever on the PS3

Now the good stuff.. I am up to chapter three (of eleven it seems)and I am about two and a half hours into the game and I have successfully  spun a double headed dragon in a house, danced like a stripper whilst a man made me the tiniest cocktail ever and shot angels out of the sky in a shooting gallery...amongst other things.

* fighting is really tight, like really... if you have played the demo you will get a good idea of how it plays.. I think it has a lot more depth than the Devil may cry games but  gives you a lot of room for improvisation using the witch-time/slowdown dodge button. It never feels unfair, if you died you probably died because you were button mashing. That said, a lot of the combat revolved heavily abround that backflip...moreso than any of the guns at this early stage in the game.

* The narrative is bonkers, utterly insane. A  weird mishmash of unsexy, sexual innuendo, all out strangeness and inappropriate quips... I have not laughed at/with a videogame like this in a long, long, long time.

* Flashback...cutscene...QTE...puzzle .... FIGHT!... The game so far has given out a lot of variety even if that just means mixing up where the combat takes place... there have been a few points where it has shifted to a different wall/ceiling mid fight and it tooks really awesome fighting strange looking angel things on the side of a big gothic church.

* it has this cool style thing going on.. the music is TERRIBLE in the same way Nicholas Cage movies are so terrible that you would not want it any other way... strange J-pop-jazz and numerous badly sung renditions of "fly me to the moon"

* So much shit going on!... theres menu's inside of menus, a witch-potion mixing minigame thing, super-bullet-witch-time-shooting-gallery-GO! time!
I haven't even looked at any of the weapon upgrades and fancy stuff in the gates of hell shop (partly due to the games massive loading time when entering it)

I will write more in depth views on the game after I beat it. I am really curious to see what the hell is going to happen because I haven't even turned into a bat or a cat or a rat or probably something else that mill make my brain go pop, this game is WEIRD! and I really arent sure how people in the west will react to it, it is like the Devil may cry cutscenes cranked to eleven  at all times. and for that I am really thankful.  I breath of fresh air to games in this genre.

... on a smaller note.. I dropped brutal legend down to easy... that game is not very much fun at all!

holy crap, that sounds awesome.
as for Brutal Legend, i knew it wasn't for me after playing the demo.

#3 Posted by cstrang (2381 posts) -
@AjayRaz: Yeah, if you didn't like the demo, it only goes down hill from there.

Sounds like an interesting game.  I may rent it when it comes out in the States.

Yeah Brutal Legend definitely wasnt for me either man, no worries there.  Bayonetta sounds amazing man, as long as the combat is great and doesnt encourage mashing, I am in!  Quick question, how would you compare it to Ninja Gaiden (if you have played that series..) ?

This game has j-pop in it? Thanks for the warning, I'll steer clear of this now.

Sounds pretty boring.

Get yourself on the official forums Marion, if your not already.

Interesting thoughts, very interesting...any idea whether it's less game-y than Devil May Cry 4?

I ask because I'm just not playing another game where beating it on regular difficulty results in only 70 points total.... I'm not that much of a points whore, but it was pretty ridiculous. More important, Devil may cry 4 was all about combos, stages, ratings, etc...which I don't particularly care for. Every inch of that one broke immersion.

Also, for Brutal Legend...I LOVED the game, but I am a fierce metalhead, that probably helped. Also, it was the only thing I've played that has been truly unique this year. But that's just my take.

Sounds really interesting.  The stuff you mention about the PS3 jankiness has got me worried though, since that will be the version I'd be getting.

@Linkyshinks:

I really need to get god hand at some point... one of those generation jump ones that I managed to miss somehow.... your collection would be made 50% more impressive if you could get a hold of one of those Okami Plush toys.... damn the japanese capcom shop for not having any english on it whatsoever!

@fynne:

I saw a thing on  eurogamer I think that said they'd be patching the really long load times... the other stuff I don't think is fixable this close to release date.

@SonicFire:

the game is pretty trophy/achievement happy with only 100 points /probably a gold trophy (looking at a japanese friend on xbl card) being hard to get
but the game really isn't about that at all. it is constantly pushing you forward  and moving you towards the next battle... it really doesn't want to keep you in one place at one time... but it is gamey... very self aware of it actually ("whatcha buyin"..."I heard that in a game once") the upgrades and items are not ridiculously overpriced thought o make you replay levels over and over and over like DMC4. it is also pretty medal focussed but I dont think there is anything to gain from getting platinum on every fight area other than personal glory and the line "I should have been a pole dancer"

@PureRok:

It may be if you don't like  games like dmc, god of war and ninja gaiden, but if you like these kind of games it has been  boiled down to what makes these games fun, stripping away a lot of the uneeded stuff like the stupid magic in god of war and giving new players a chance by letting you improvise during fights instead of sticking to the same pattern... it really want's you to go out of your way to experiment with the flashy moves

@JonnyAvacado:

it requires almost no timing on very easy and easy but as soon as you put it up to normal it starts getting pretty hard, there is no block button  and the combat focusses more on using a backflip to dodge out of the way and then strike from behind than blocking and countering... theres a bit of timeshifting also and it wants you to get really up in the enemies faces as the guns do not really do anything but chip away minimal damage. I have only played a bit of The first ninja gaiden and both demos of the 360/ps3 versions of ninja gaiden 2 and This game is definately more forgiving, it still requires a lot of pattern memorization but if you know how to use the dodge well in conjunction with the jump it can save you pretty often... every single time I have resorted to button mashing I have gotten killed as the enemies counter moves seem to do a hell of a lot of damage.

 Maybe you saw IGN's notorious review on the game back then. I haven't read anything Chris Roper has had to say since on videogame. Anyway, It gets my recommendation.  GodHand and Bayonetta actually happen to share similarities in the style of presentation and humour. It's a blast.

The game has obvious flaws but they mean very little to how I view the game overall. If you can pick it up cheap, you should.

I do don't I. I guess I could put things right by getting a Chiberterasu plush, when the DS game launches next year:

Anyone who isnt pumped for this game has no soul -_-

The demo was okay
I had to do the same thing for Brutal Legend but after I beat it I realized that I should have looked around for the collectables because those solos would have really helped and I could have beaten it on brutal

Haha! Sounds Mind Blowing!!
I played the demo on it for the 360 and it was Epic!!
Loved the fluent combt style and the variety. Prolly have to wait for it to be released in US.
Importing seems complicated.

Too bad... I've got no soul.

Meh. Just seems like DMC on steroids. ohh yeah, with boobies. I am though glad you are enjoying this game, it's why we play them.

I actually like the music... Cannot wait for this game.

It's not really that strange.  A lot of japanese (most even) within the age group likely to be playing this have a functional grasp on english.

I am curious though, was there an option to change everything (menus and such) into Japanese?
#19 Posted by Nasos100 (727 posts) -

im still waiting for devil may cry 5

#20 Posted by GunstarRed (5211 posts) -

@Teran:

I would assume you would have to set your console language to japanese... but there is no option in the  options menu to revert it back to Japanese

The instruction manual has whole sections in english though intermixed with the Japanese text ... I don't know if thats normal or not  but it seems a little strange...

It can't be less bearable than DMC3 and 4's pseudo-industrial metal nonsense.
#22 Posted by GunstarRed (5211 posts) -
@Ghostiet:
Now that ive finished it... the music that is in the demo plays pretty much throughout every single fight... it is one of those things where you just get really used to it regardless of how bad it is...  I think the same happened with all the DMC games for me.

Thye other music that plays throughout the levels and some of the orchestral stuff is pretty good actually, not mindblowingly awesome or anything but pleasant enough.

there is an old 50s version of fly my to the moon at the end of the game it's pretty good.

@marioncobretti: I don't know about the manual thing.  As for setting the console language, most games with multi-lingual support that I know of let you select the language from an in game menu but setting the console language seems reasonable.

By 50's version of "Fly Me to the Moon" do you mean Sinatra's version?

I agree seems like a super over the top version of DMC, but instead of a male protagonist you play as a couple of long legs with tits on them. Scary thing i listened to RebelFM and firstly they talked about how crappy this game is on the PS3 which is sad in it self, but!, also that some dudes are apparently rubbing one out to this game, which is just so much more sad on some deep, deep, deep disturbing levels.

That's pretty much to be expected. Devil May Cry was made entirely in English as well, which has continued with its sequels. It only makes sense that what may as well be its sister series, created by the same person who originated DMC, would do the same thing.
