What the hell did I just play

It's been covered in other reviews ad nauseum, but allow me to reiterate: this game is batshit insane. No, really.  In fact, it was almost too overwhelming at first. Torture attacks? Nonsensical Eastern cutscenes? Cringe-inducing, sexploitative combat? Erotic librarians? It was all too much.

But I soldiered on, and after a few chapters I warmed up to the game in a big way. If I had to come up with some bullets on why you should play Bayonetta besides the fact that it looks and plays great, I'd go with:

    • An incredibly deep and satisfying combat system
    • A story that, while a little obtuse, gets pretty compelling late in the game
    • A lighthearted irreverence that made for a fun and borderline endearing gaming experience

Yes, the over-the-top exploitation of lead character Bayonetta is a little jarring at first, but after you get more comfortable with the game itself, it just becomes part of the scenery. Give this one a shot if you want to bust up some angels!

Exciting, over the top, and incredibly satisfying 0

Being the mastermind behind the original Devil May Cry and hence a pioneer of sorts of the "character action game", Hideki Kamiya had a lot to live up to with Bayonetta, the game that many consider the spiritual successor Devil May Cry. However, Bayonetta exceeds expectations by not only delivering a tight, well executed gameplay experience but also offering delightfully over the top and campy narrative filled with great tongue-in-cheek dialogue.  From the first moment you step foot into the wo...
