One of the things that always struck me odd about people making the transition from writing about games to actually developing them is that the workflow doesn't seem like it could possibly be any more different. Reviewing games in particular requires you to focus intensely on one game for a few days before summing up the experience and then moving on to the next game. It's mostly short-term objectives and constantly changing scenery. Game development shares that singular focus, though it also requires you to think about that one game constantly for 18 months. It's like building a house with your bare hands, and I'm used to just renting.

I've been doing this part for effectively my entire adult life, and it's hard for me to really imagine those specific details of what it's like to release a game, so I was intrigued by a recent feature on Kotaku asking developers about any rituals surrounding the completion of a game. Some of it's pretty obvious celebratory stuff like popping champagne bottles and taking much-needed vacations, as well as plenty of predictable hand-wringing over message boards and review scores. For a lot of guys, such as Epic's Cliff Bleszinski and Capcom's Ben Judd, it's apparent that just because the game is finished doesn't mean you're anywhere near the finish line. A lot of it's kind of mundane stuff, but they got responses from a good cross-section of the development community, and it's interesting to see how differently folks like David Jaffe and American McGee respond to this specific part of the development process.

Ben Judd, #69
In between accepting submissions tonight, I noticed Nick Chester's daily wrap-up of news bits on Destructoid contained a link to a Japanese story out of Dengeki Online on Bionic Commando: Rearmed. Seems like Capcom's hot-looking remake has been getting pushed back time and time again, and if this amazing photo of Ben Judd, macking like a mack does, is to be believed, the game is going to come out on 69!

Wait, that doesn't make any sense, let me back up... OK, I see what I did. Anyways, after running Dengeki's story through the good ol' Google Translator, it makes it sound like Bionic Commando Rearmed is going to hit Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network next week. It also revealed this unintentionally terrific machine translation gem:

"This time, the Naniwa NAISUGAIPURODYUSA Ben Judd, who appeared in the history and development of the film in which he does not appeal to me."

It's good to know that Google's translation robots find Ben Judd unappealing.

Anyway, this is the translated bit that matters:

  • BAIONIKKUKOMANDO the revival of Master Plan D
  • Manufacturer: Capcom
  • FOR: PS3/Xbox 360 (download only)
  • Genre: ACT
  • Release Date: PS3 2008 year on July 30 appointment / Xbox 360 2008 plan year on July 31
  • Price: PS3 1200 yen (tax included) / Xbox 360 800 Microsoft Points

Hot. Capcom's US-run blog, which is about as loose with the info as a publisher-run blog could get, hasn't updated with anything, but hey, keep your fingers crossed, and by this time next week, maybe we'll all be playing a little Don't Touch The Ground in multiplayer.

Head over to Dengeki for the full (Japanese) story.

[UPDATE] Between the news that Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 was hitting XBLA next week and a Famitsu story rebutting this supposed release date, it looks like we'll all have to wait a little longer to swing around and shoot Nazis. Curses!

Wow, so apparently I recorded a podcast while I was in Las Vegas at CAPTIVATE08, Capcom's press event where I got to see stuff like Street Fighter IV, Bionic Commando, and Dark Void. If memory serves, this was recorded between dinner and a trip to a nightclub with a retractable roof, which is something my roommate Brendan claims to have invented in a dream.

He also claims to have dream-invented "dance boxes," which are mailbox-like boxes that sit on street corners and play music--like a jukebox with no controls. Also, "Electric Gloves," which in his dream was some sort of alcoholic beverage. We then went on to create this drink in real-life, but I'll save those grisly details for some other time.

So enjoy this bonus podcast action, which includes me as a guest, along with Garnett Lee and Shane Bettenhausen from EGM/1up/GameNOW. I haven't listened to it yet, so I'm not sure how heavily edited it is, but my most vivid memory of said podcast involved everyone continually calling Shane a Neo-Nazi. That's how Ben Judd (seen above) rolls, man. What, you thought all he did was translate press conferences and nobly lead the charge for exciting new Bionic Commando-related products?

Did we ever actually talk about Bionic Commando? You know, I'm not sure. Listen for yourself and find out!
