Kotaku has this amazing-looking video that may or may not actually be Beyond Good & Evil 2.

As outlandishly too-fluid-to-be-a-game slick as this looks, it also looks like the natural progression of the sort of character awareness toward the environment that Ubisoft's been perfecting since Assassin's Creed and the most recent Prince of Persia. But then, I'll also say upfront that I've seen confidential proof-of-concept videos come out of Ubisoft for other games that looked a little too good to be true--because they weren't true, of course. But even if this is merely an official example of the direction Michel Ancel and friends are going with this sequel, it's pretty exciting.

I reckon it's true. It looks good any way you see it.

Never played BG&E but I own it. I find it hard to get past the terrible PC controls..

i'll guess we'll just have to wait and see then.

the look reminds me of the original RE5 trailers. Too fluid, too much subtle details everywhere.

ps. looks like 3rd person mirrors edge

Is this another killzone 2 trailer?

No way it's real, forget about the graphics and the animations, just think about what's going on there.  The person was just randomly running around, yet it all worked out for them.  If a player was at the control, no way they could find their way through all that and then know exactly when to make that leap of faith at the end.  It's just a trailer to generate hype and show the concept.

I don't think there's any way that's actual gameplay, but I loved Beyond Good and Evil and this still has me stoked

#7 Posted by AndrewB (7568 posts) -

This is most certainly a hype-machine video, possibly even leaked by people involved with the game on purpose. Or it was meant to be shown at E3 this year. Either way, I'm stoked. I've yet to finish the first game, but love the narration. Some of the gameplay, not so much, but that doesn't mean it's bad or anything.

I like the style... SOrt of like, a subtle TF2 filter of Mirror's Edge, in an Indiana-Jones-esque universe. Also looks a bit too smooth, so I'm guessing not quite... And that helicopter looked like something you'd see in Half Life 2, like it was made from bouys and a mini crane and stuff... Neat.

So what does this have to do with pigs?

#9 Posted by jakob187 (21662 posts) -

There's already a thread going about this, Brad!!!  YEESH!!!  Can we get a mod to lock this?  =  P

Either way, as I said there...and I'll say now...it looks more like a trailer than actual in-game footage.  I have no doubt that it's the in-game engine, though.  Regardless...there are no alien-type creatures and the ox is just an ox.  I'm not saying that it isn't BG&E 2...but for all we know, it may be a tech demo and/or some type of trailer.

the first one on the ps2 was pretty awesome. Short, but awesome. The world was very believable with a nice art style.

"too-fluid-to-be-a-game" haha i see that.

There's no doubt in my mind that this is in engine, hell, even gameplay, animations specifically, but the camera has to be the forced/staged part. Oh and the AI around it all.

Looks great...whatever it really is

#12 Posted by CoolDrMoney (1978 posts) -

Is it E3 05 again? That's just a trailer, no way that's gameplay. Hopefully some will be shown at E3 next month.

#13 Posted by Luberik (129 posts) -

It could be in-game engine, just a tad tooooo fluid lol. But you see the influence of prince of persia and assas. creed with the bumping into walls and stumbling and stuff. It also kinda reminded me of uncharted 2 trailers and gameplay vids...

I hope they make it as good as the first one story-wise.

#14 Posted by spiceninja (3056 posts) -

Yeah that's defiantly BGAE 2. But it's probably not real gameplay. It's too smooth and artificial looking for it to be real.

#15 Posted by Agnogenic_delete (1034 posts) -

That looked incredible. :D

#16 Posted by Crono (2652 posts) -

Beyond speculating whether this was ingame or not, it looks like an awesome concept.

#17 Posted by ImperiousRix (2963 posts) -

I dunno, it looked like it could be in-game footage.  In fact, it seemed like a lot of the things they were doing in the vid (bumping into walls, shimmying past the table) looked like it was done deliberately to show off the in-game engine.  Call me crazy, but not only do I think it's BGAE2, but I believe it's game footage.

The are using Jade's voice FX from BG&E for the grunting and the crying, and of course the extendy bo staff is a giveaway. Also the vehicle she gets in at the end is sporting Mamago's Jamaican colors so it is mosdef BG&E related. I am super pumped up by this, as I think that game is easily last generation's most underrated game, and one of the best adventure games to come out in the last decade and a half.

That defintely doesn't look like Hillys though.

I wonder how much string cheese I will have to buy to get a copy of this!

If it's actual gameplay, I'm already sold. If it's just a trailer, the direction the game seems to be going is intriguing. Either way, I'll certainly be keeping an eye on BGAE2.

#20 Posted by Reale (261 posts) -

its definitely a proof-of-concept video... anyone remember the mirrors edge proof-of-concept video?!

Looks amazing.

Beyond Good & Evil teaser trailer released in 2008.

Hey look, Mirrors Creed of Persia 2.

#25 Posted by Gizmo (5389 posts) -

They need to change the character model or something, looks EXACTLY like Faith.

Don't you mean Faith looks exactly like Jade?
#27 Edited by Seijur0 (104 posts) -

Makes me wish people could actually play games that fluidly... cuz that was just amazing.

#28 Posted by Valke (71 posts) -

Looks to me like a proof of concept trying to look like gameplay by intentionally being slightly non-fluid (bumping into walls, etc.)

#29 Posted by John1912 (1855 posts) -

Yea, no way that is being played in real time.  The camera is way too perfect.  Will be a great day when someone actually makes a camera that works that well.  Never played the first one, but this looks cool as hell.  Hope its half as good as it looks.

#30 Posted by Qdor (70 posts) -

Real time or not, it looks hella amazing. Makes me wish I picked  up the first one.

#31 Edited by InFamous91 (931 posts) -

shit looks GREAT!!!(but is it gameplay and is it really BG&E)
however it seem similar to mirror edge lol
i thou they're going to change the gameplay from the original
CAN'T WAIT FOR E3

#32 Posted by InFamous91 (931 posts) -

it has to be beyond good & evil
look @ the video Gizmo post

#33 Posted by EdWood (26 posts) -

This is Assassin's Creed w/ Beyond Good and Evil skins.  (Basically recycling Assasins Creed)  UBISOFT you are getting lazy.

#34 Edited by sneakysnake128 (186 posts) -

Sheesh, so many stupid people here comparing this to Mirror's Edge and Assassin's Creed, which both came out like 4-5 years after BG&E 1. Ignorant bastards. The first game was all about the story, so stop jumping to conclusions if you've never played the first game.

Though I do have to admit that the supposed new gameplay is much changed from the first game.

#35 Posted by MrKlorox (11209 posts) -

Looks very real, and very not real-time. The animations look game-quality, not cutscene quality. It was just the events and the camera movements that made it seem "questionable".

I'd have to say I'm interested. I never really played the first BG&E due to the poor controller and lack of proper widescreen support in the PC version.

#36 Posted by Artemis_D (817 posts) -

I'm not really seeing the Assassin's Creed or Mirror's Edge comparison....  she climbed a building and brushed up against a few walls.  I've only been playing games for twenty-five years... but I'm pretty sure those weren't the first two games to incorporate those ideas.  The only reason you're thinking of those games is because you just played them a few months ago. I see where  you're coming from but, that looked different enough.

I saw helicopters to, so it's exactly like 50 Cent Blood on the Sand.  Exactly.

#37 Posted by manathirst (167 posts) -

This looks too good to be true.  It's a significant refinement of AC and POP animation.

#38 Posted by Smersh (228 posts) -

Tang! FMV for sure.
But  when you think about how close Killzone 2 got to its own cinematic...
And how good the first BG&E was...
You'll be as excited as meeee.

#39 Posted by Grumbel (910 posts) -

The sequences shows both motion blur artifacts as well as aliasing on the shadows, so unless they deliberately faked it, thats definitively realtime in engine. For in-game it looks to wild to be playable, but then BGE1 did had similar chase sequences, just much slower and not that wild camera movement. So while its unlikely to be normal gameplay, it could be one of those, maybe with QTE mixed in. Who knows. Looks definitvly pretty amazing, but at the same time a little to good to be true.

#40 Posted by NickL (2246 posts) -

so everyone is getting mad because brad said it looks like a highly improved merge of 2 games that were awesome conceptually but not quite there technically? interesting...

#41 Posted by supersatanic (56 posts) -

In theory, this looks good but I'm not sure how the hell they will implement this without trial and error gameplay.
Assasins creed was really innovative, but it didn't change much. It was an OK game, but one in which the character moved so organically that it never seemed like an animation was breaking into another. The gameplay and pacing were only mediocre.
Also, worthy mention is the ninja gaiden series,in which you had to actually perform to make your character move so it worked so much better

Reminds me of Mirror's Edge

#43 Posted by Vigorousjammer (2491 posts) -

HOLY SHIT! YES!!!

I know it can't be actual gameplay... and I know there's been a trailer before...
but, DUDE!! Beyond Good & Evil 2!!!
I'm soooo stoked!

#44 Posted by rateoforange (403 posts) -

Artemis_D:

The mirror's edge connection comes from the leap of faith at the end. That game is all about jumping off into the blue and hoping there is a building there. ME also had the hopping onto the helicopter thing in the first level. Good game, on steam now for $20!

#45 Posted by ReTarDedFisHy (1062 posts) -

Target/Concept-footage. :)
But if the final game looks anything close to this, ReTarDedFisHy will be a very happy... erm, fish.

The camera is too crazy for this to be gameplay... it'd be impossible to control your character. It pulls out too far at times, and is far too shaky.

Regardless, if this is in-engine, then OH SNAP I WANT TO PLAY THIS GAME.

#48 Posted by IzzyGraze (850 posts) -

Looks a HELL of a lot like Jade. I'd say it's Beyond good and evil 2.

#49 Posted by high_seraph (52 posts) -

wow this looks incredible... do i sense another killzone 2 scandal coming on? or this just Ubisoft trying to drum up some hype about a new game... or both?

#50 Posted by StarwindX9 (145 posts) -

That looks like what mirror's edge should have been.
