Cutscene A non-interactive sequence within a game most often used for plot advancement. |

Strong Women Women capable of taking care of themselves and whom aren't stereotypical "damsels in distress." |

Bullet Time Bullet time is a gameplay mechanic that allows players to slow down time. Depending on the game itself, the player often slows down along with the world around them, however occasionally the player can simply move at normal speed while the game world continues to slow. |

|
Minigames These are often a departure from the conventional gameplay of a game. There have also been compilations; games including only minigames. |
|
|
A.I. Companion An AI companion is a computer-controlled ally who follows and aids you through your adventures, or who requires your protection. The AI companion's survival is often essential to game and story progression. |

|
Multiple Protagonists The story mode of the game features multiple playable main characters. |
|
|
Invisible Wall An imaginary boundary in the game world that limits player movement to a specific area. They are often criticized as a poor component of level design, when an actual wall or other visible boundary could have been used to delineate a game's playing field. |

|
Context Sensitive An action that is sensitive to context. Like going up to something and pushing A, which would perform a different action than pressing A normally. |
|
|
Day/Night Cycle Environments cycle between day and night, often with effects on other aspects of the game. |

|
Health Health is a value that gauges how much damage a player can take in a game before they die or pass out. Also known as Hit Points (HP) or Life in some games - not to be confused with Lives. |

|
Vehicle Customization The building/editing of vehicles, mechs, and the like. |
|
|
Artificial Intelligence Artificial Intelligence, or AI, commonly refers to the programmed behaviors of NPCs in a game, whether it's the fact that a soldier takes cover behind a wall in Gears of War, or that townspeople cheer upon your arrival to their village in Fable. |

|
Journalist A reporter for a news-outlet, whether it be as a writer or photographer. |

|
DomZ The DomZ are an alien race from Beyond Good & Evil that constantly assault the planet Hillys and abduct it's inhabitants and force them to work for the DomZ. |
|
|
Fetch Quests An industry game design standard that's appeared in many games over the years, the fetch quest involves sending the player out to collect a certain number of items, and return them to complete the quest. |
|
|
Side Quests Quests that aren't necessary for game completion. Often they simply lengthen a game with pointless collecting. |
|
|
Photography Whether it's taking pictures of things for points or as part of a journal, photography is playing an ever increasing role in many of today's video games. |
|
|
Humor Just good ol' clean funny. |
|
|
Open World Non-linear level design where the player is able to freely traverse the game world and choose where and when to visit certain areas in the game. |
|
|
Linear Gameplay The opposite of open-ended gameplay, linear gameplay uses scripted events, cut scenes, and a restricted path to tell a story exactly how the writer intends, and control elements of the action. |

|
Anthropomorphism Anthropomorphism is the concept of giving human-like attributes and/or motivation to non-human entities. Examples would be the sword Frostmourne of Warcraft lore, the character Frog from Chrono Trigger and characters from the Star Fox series. |

|
Dystopian World Future in which social inequities and the promises of science have reached an extreme. Usually used in science fiction to show a world with high technology for the powerful and a majority in extreme suffering. |

|
Steam Steam is a digital distribution service originally created by Valve for its computer games. It was later expanded to distribute software created by other companies and includes social networking features and achievement support. |

|
Game Over Game Over originally appeared in pinball machines and, later, arcade machines. When you lose at a game, it is game over. |
|
|
Dog The character's dog is increasingly becoming prevalent as a game mechanic ie...fallout 3, fable 2. |
|
|
Aliens Aliens appear in video games either as a positive or negative force. They usually appear in science fiction or horror video games. In some games, the main protagonist may be an alien. |

|
Alpha Section The Alpha Section are the supposed "good guys" of Beyond Good & Evil. However, something is not quite right with what they are doing, so Jade is sent on a mission to find out just what they're up to. |
|
|
Non-Player Character Characters controlled by the game for players to interact with, as opposed to player characters, the characters controlled by whomever is playing the game. |
|
|
Atmosphere Games that set a dominant mood, emotional tone, or environment that really sinks you in to the gaming experience. |
|
|
Literature Inspired Games based on literature. This does not include licenses of another adaptation. |
|
|
Multiple Discs Sometimes a game is just too large for one disc. |
|
|
Loading Screens Loading Screens are specific screens that are displayed while a game is loading resources so that the player has something to distract them while the game loads. Loading Screens can be images, text or even mini-games - and sometimes a combination of all three. |

After-Credits Story-Changing Ending A cutscene or conversation that appears after, or during, the credits and just so happens to reveal crucial information pertaining to the game's plot or characters, as seen in the Metal Gear Solid games. |

|
Partners A partner is someone in a duo that shares the same status and/or billing. In video games, you often switch from one to the other because they have different strengths and weaknesses. |

|
Totalitarian Government A government that restricts the flow of information, or willingly subjugates it's people. |

|
Propaganda Controlling the media is essential if you plan to conquer any sizeable part of the world, and if you don't control the media... your enemies will... Use propaganda to either control your own population or to influence your enemy's. |

|
Digital Distribution Digital Distribution is the concept of purchasing digital media via the internet and having it sent to the user directly via the internet. No physical representation of this content is given but the content resides on the users hard drive and is legally owned by them. |

|
In-Game Radio Games often feature in game music, however some have taken the effort to create their own radio stations, with DJ's, talkback and a variety of music. |

|
Corrupt Government Law makers and fat cats who will sell the population down the river just to gain more power and money. |

|
Stealth Using stealth often requires the player to accomplish their objective without being detected by enemies. Methods of detection can vary from game to game, and can be based on an enemy's line of sight, how quiet the player is, or even how the player interacts with the environment. |

|
Androgyny When someone is androgynous, they have a mix of masculine and feminine aspects, or they have the appearance of being in between male and female. A common aspect of many J-RPG's. |

|
Boss Fight A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists. |
|
|
Jump It's arguably the one move that symbolizes the medium to those outside it. The ability to jump, be it onto building, onto platforms, or onto skulls, is one of the all time most important abilities ever put in a video game. |

|
Interspecies Duos Games in which the two main protagonists are of different species. |
|
|
Pig Pigs are pink, oinking mammals with a button nose and curly tail. They are rumored to eat a lot and be dirty. They don't fly, but they do bring home the bacon. |

Female Protagonists This concept is for games where the main playable character is female. Apparently it's not all about men. :D |
