Big Boss is an influential character from the Metal Gear franchise. He is viewed as a legend by all those who came after him. Before he earned the title of Big Boss however, he was given the code name Naked Snake.

Origins

Despite the code name, FOX unit operative Naked Snake is highly trained in guerrilla warfare and stealth tactics. His ability to not be seen comes in handy when deployed on a mission midway through the tension of the Cold War. Left in the jungles of the , the objectives of the Virtuous Mission are simple- retrieve defected scientist Nikolai Stephanovich Sokolov and return him to American soil. Why? Sokolov’s role in developing some nightmarish weapon must be stopped, lest a whole new war begins. It would begin a new age of fear.

Snake’s experience is not limited to FOX, joining said unit after serving in the CIA and several years as a Green Beret. His specialty lies in the covert operation he was picked for, also holding a title as a seasoned combat veteran. The military equipment and weaponry experience are abilities Snake picked up from his mentor, American war hero The Boss. It is with her that Snake developed the exceptional fighting technique known as Close Quarters Combat. This system is one that is heavily featured in Metal Gear Solid 3.

While adept at the mission he is assigned to, the inception of the game presents Snake as rookie with many intricacies of the battlefield yet to learn. It is through the game that he becomes more experienced in the ways of the operation.

Virtuous Mission

Naked Snake is assigned to the Virtuous Mission at the beginning of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The objective of this mission is to rescue a Russian scientist who wishes to defect to the United States. The scientists name is Sokolov. The mission is a huge failure.

Although Naked Snake succeeds in finding Sokolov (and escapes despite engaging the Ocelot Unit in combat), the two of them soon encounter The Boss. The Boss reveals that she has defected to the USSR. At this point, Naked Snake also meets Colonel Volgin. Outnumbered, and overpowered by The Boss, Snake is thrown into a river and loses Sokolov back to the Colonel and The Boss. Soon thereafter, Volgin test fires a new 'mini' nuclear warhead named the Davy Crocket. The USSR thinks that the United States fired this missile (because their radar picked up the US plane that was in the area to deploy and pick up Naked Snake), and gives the United States an ultimatum. They must eliminate Volgin and The Boss and destroy the Shagohod, or risk a nuclear war with the USSR.

Operation Snake Eater

Although Snake goes back to the facility where he first found Sokolov, it is now abandoned. He has come back here to meet with his contact, codenamed ADAM. ADAM is a NSA codebreaker who was in the USSR. Another codebreaker, codenamed EVA had also defected. After a while, Snake goes back outside and is ambushed by guards.  He was rescued by a female on a bike, who later identified herself as EVA. Furthermore, she offered Snake intel and equipment. Although Snake had not met ADAM, it appeared as if he had met the other codebreaker, EVA.

After resting the night, Snake was once again ambushed, this time by the Ocelot being led by Revolver Ocelot. Ocelot takes EVA hostage, but forgets that he only has six shots in his revolver. Snake manages to overpower him, and Snake and EVA escape. Later on, Snake is captured by the enemy. During this time, he is brutally tortured by Volgin. At once point during the torture scene, Ocelot accidentally blinds Snake in his right eye by firing his revolver next to Snake's eye.

Snake managed to escape from capture however and he later went to the Groznyi Grad facility where the Shagohod was being developed and built. He rigged the building with explosives and destroyed it, but not before fighting Volgin in a one on one hand fight. After defeating Volgin, Volgin takes control of the Shagohod and chases Snake. This ends with Snake disabling the Shagohod with RPG's and finally killing Volgin (although it was actually a bolt of lightning that killed Volgin once Snake had lured Volgin out of the cockpit of the Shagohod).

As Snake is leaving the area, he fights The Boss and completes his last objective of killing her. This was apparently a difficult thing for Snake to do, as The Boss was his mentor and had taught him how to be an efficient soldier.

For his heroic actions during Operation Snake Eater, Naked Snake is awarded the title of Big Boss.

Life After Operation Snake Eater

Some time after Metal Gear Solid 3's conclusion, Big Boss formed FOXHOUND, and created Outer Heaven, a fortified state that holds Metal Gear. After being defeated by Solid Snake at the end of Metal Gear, Big Boss retreated to central Asia, where he created Zanzibar Land, and began construction of another Metal Gear. Zanzibar Land served as the locale for Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.

Appearance in Metal Gear Solid 4

After being burned alive at the end of Metal Gear 2, Big Boss was not seen by Solid Snake for the next 15 years. Naomi reveals that Big Boss is in fact alive in Metal Gear Solid 4, but his body appears to be burned by Ocelot part way through the game. At the game's conclusion, Big Boss makes a surprise appearance when Solid Snake tries to commit suicide.

Big Boss tells Snake that the body that was burned was actually Solidus'. After a lengthy conversation, Big Boss is killed by FoxDIE before Snake's eyes.
