Playboy knows boobs will never get old, regardless of medium. But it hasn't been behind the wheel of a videogame just yet. That's about to change this year, as Playboy magazine has announced plans to launch its own games label. It has also revealed a partnership with Bigpoint Games, an MMOG distributor, as well as the first fruits of the budding relationship, a Grand Theft Auto knock-off called Poisonville.

Playboy has become rather active in our little neck of the woods of late. 2K Games' Mafia II prominently features in-game Playboy magazines that you can view at your leisure. Capcom's upcoming Dead Rising 2 has magazines as well, though they have more of a utilitarian purpose as they provide stat boosts similar to the books in the original Dead Rising

Consider these appearances first steps to the full-on sponsorship that has been revealed today. But don't necessarily believe this is Playboy''s expression of a passion to make solid games. The Playboy marketing gurus coolly remind us in the announcement press release that this new label is all about "meeting the needs" the magazine's demographic based on feedback received.

I think this is where you buy guns in Poisonville. Maybe.

== TEASER ==And while it's unspecified if this new label will only be a browser-based MMOG front for the magazine, Playboy is willing to divulge that "more high quality, development partnerships [will be announced] in the coming months."

You can view a trailer for Poisonville just below. It's an MMOG that drops you in a battered metropolis, riddled with the taint of gangs and violence. You'll be asked to be a nice guy and do missions in "order to counteract corruption," gain respect, and "rebuild" reputations. Driving is confirmed, as well as PVP and gang warfare. Also, huge explosions and "Playboy-caliber women."

The game is supposedly in open beta, and I suppose you could access said beta through Playboy's website, a page that also currently offers live nude chats and all sorts of NSFW stuff.  Knock yourself out.

So you shoot people and have sex?

#4 Posted by EveretteScott (1518 posts) -

So kind of like APB, but with bewbs?

#5 Posted by Jimi (1126 posts) -

This game is going to suck, I'm calling it.

#6 Posted by Drunken (20 posts) -

Lol ive got windows 98 games that have better looking CG than this game .

#7 Posted by Manhattan_Project (2162 posts) -

Can't wait for this.

#8 Posted by Vorbis (2750 posts) -

I don't like where this is going.

#9 Edited by AZChristopher (93 posts) -

Playboy being part of a crappy GTA clone. Not exactly what we should be hoping for.

#10 Posted by zityz (2360 posts) -

Well, looks more interesting sadly than APB...

I always kinda looked down on Playboy as just being a sleazy magazine.. that is, until I read some of the interviews they conducted, the most important one to me being the last big one with John Lennon. Reading that, I realized they were mostly interested in things that interest young men, and naked women just happens to be right at the top of that list. In that context, I'm surprised they took so long entering the video game space, and I hope someone there realizes how bad BMX XXX and even Playboy Mansion were. You need more than sex to build a fun game.

Playboy readers, they have "needs" according to Playboy PR.

#13 Posted by Djeffers03 (2545 posts) -

Oh god.

#14 Posted by ZmillA (2273 posts) -

im guessing it will be a crimecraft / APB quality product

#15 Posted by Colin (707 posts) -

UGH just ugh...
#16 Posted by Manhattan_Project (2162 posts) -

Has anyone figured out how to get in the beta?

And yes, I am kinda interested in what this game will be.

#17 Posted by Blair (2513 posts) -

What an awful name to accompany a likely awful game.

#18 Posted by XcL (153 posts) -

So ,, hustlers going to make Saint's row 4 ??

#19 Posted by xMP44x (2193 posts) -

I think it looks utterly terrible, sadly. I was surprised by the concept and then immediately let down by the trailer. Playboy Mansion actually looks like it could have been a better game, and from those graphics it looks like an early PS2 game.

bewbs!

#21 Posted by DrMadHatten (118 posts) -

I'm interested as well. But of course this could totally flop

APB had several massive tits. Unfortunately they were in charge of the finances.
#23 Posted by Meteora (5787 posts) -

Hopefully this isn't total crapware and is at least decent.

#24 Posted by Jackel2072 (2268 posts) -

well at least they didnt make Playboy Pokemon snap!

Just like real life then. What?
#27 Posted by MetalGearSunny (6999 posts) -

This will change the gaming industry.

#28 Posted by scarace360 (4828 posts) -
@Robitt: O i get it.
#29 Posted by buzz_killington (3532 posts) -
@ZmillA: Except it's free-to-play and browser based.
#30 Posted by bartok (2542 posts) -

Is it me or does it seem like Playboy is doing everything in their power to go bankrupt?  I bet Hugh Hefner was all like," These blondes 19 year olds I pretend to have sex with like them new fangled electronic games so let's copy that one that is always on the news and I am boat captain."

The problem with playboy is that they're not hardcore enough to really be "porn" but at the same time, too NSFW to be a casual magazine or website read. Obviously, employers don't want  you to go to playboy.com and when you're home - you're not really going to check it out then either.

plus, pretty much everything is behind a paywall.

Playboy is just stuck in an odd place right now and I guess gaming is where they hope they can get some sort of new acceptance?

www.poisonville.com

Easiest way to play the game. I've registered but haven't started yet. Only problem I'm having, it's java. What's the point in java when Unity looks better and seems to play better. Also, I wouldn't bother playing it. The shooting feels awful, the movement feels awful and the cars have zero weight or physics to them.

Guessing an mmo version of the playboy mansion (which I thought the photography part was fun test of photography classes) is prolly on the list of games from them, at least whatever they make will be better than the last few Leisure Suit Larry games.

#34 Posted by I_smell (3924 posts) -

This looks pretty bad.

#35 Posted by WiFiPirate (145 posts) -

Wonder how long it takes for them to partner this game with "Game Crush"?

#36 Posted by Video_Game_King (36272 posts) -

Wasn't there already a Playboy game?

@NekuSakuraba: I played that game, here's the intro video

@scarace360:

Playboy's not about sex.

So the game is most likely about shootin' dudes, bewbs, and, very rarely, a fuzzy muff.
#44 Posted by thefreed (153 posts) -

I think that Playboy as a video game company has a chance to come up big... but not with this game... This game looks like it sucks.

If they start making video games with good, fun ideas and it has sex in it... you better believe it'll sell.

Like a dating sims game... or an dating/adult mmog... They already have the name behind it so they can promote it like crazy.

#45 Posted by Shag (28 posts) -
@Jimi: I think your right
#46 Posted by Aas (604 posts) -

That's the worst CGI I've seen in quite some time.

#47 Posted by c1337us (5751 posts) -

Poisonville looks terrible, I'll get interested in Playboy's foray into games when they decide to invest into something that looks good.

@Goldanas: Then this game will tank.
