Is $6 $6 too much? This looks like a prime candidate for a PS+ offer some day.

well Binary Domain has a way better frame rate on PC. Having played both versions, I can't go back and play the boss fights on PS3 cause the frame rates during some of them are pretty bad. Like the spiderbot boss fight quite literally slows to like 3 frames per second.

The batshit insane story is enough to recommend the game at $6. Shooting isn't the best but at the same time I cannot think of many other third person shooters that I would recommend over BD.

Finally, Steam has something on sale that I actually want!

OK, so I wanted Torchlight 2 and Dishonored as well, but I remember having to restrain myself during the Autumn sale. For this one, I feel like there's nothing I particularly want.

It's not amazing, it's just really weird, but in an enjoyable way.

I personally enjoyed BD's story as an odd look into how a Japanese development team approaches non-Asian cultural representation. I would consider it borderline racist if I thought it came from malice rather than lack of knowledge.

I thought it was a great game. For $6 you really can't go wrong. And if you liked Nier and could overlook its shortcomings, there is no reason you can't do the same for this one too.

I'd buy it, but I have a rule of not buying any game that my Steam Wallet can't afford this year.

And fuck me if I'm playing DotA 2 for a few more days.

I thought this game was great. There's a pretty epic roof escape scene, and while the twist Patrick talks about didn't blow me away like it did him, I thought the characters were well fleshed out and the dialogue was enjoyable.

For $6.25, it's a no brainer IMO.

Just finished this on the 360 this weekend and I'd say it's worth $6. Some of the boss fights go on way too long especially later in the game but the story and characters made the game enjoyable enough.

Not so much of a twist, but a sudden realization of, "Oh yea... this game was made in Japan."

I bought the game and the DLC. So now I must ask: is the DLC any good?

Avatar image for andorski
#31 Posted by Andorski (5475 posts) -

I never used any of the DLC, but reading the descriptions they sound kinda pointless. The multiplayer DLC are just skins, and I doubt there is any activity online for this game. The single player DLC just gives you passive skill boosts (which you get a ton of from just the original game) and a few weapons (in my play through I just stuck with the basic assault rifle throughout the entire game).

Story wise?! Spec Ops The Line had more impact. As far as gameplay wise then both games have faults but to be Binary Domain's fault were more frustrating and actually prevented me from enjoying the game.

I'm still going through Spec Ops: The Line.

Just got the the scene where Lugo kills the Radioman. Either "the big twist" hasn't happened yet or something is going over my head because I don't see the big deal about the story.

Does the main appeal come from the game's depiction of war as having no clear good guys? The inevitability of war creating massive innocent casualties despite noble intentions? The slow decay of Captain Walkers mental state? Seeing as how your average video game will absolutely beat you over the head about who is right and who is not when telling a story, I can understand the appreciation for having a game muddle the ethical line. Not sure if I would praise it though, as many people seem to do for this game. You're story is bound to look better in comparison when the modern military genre is filled with Call of Duty and Call of Duty clones. As for specific story beats, I thought the scene where Captain Walker finds out that his white phosphorus attack killed a massive group of civilians was surprising but lacked any impact. Just like any other shooter, you spend the entire game basically committing genocide. The 33rd are far from innocent civilians, but the desensitization of death still occurs. The same issues goes for Walkers' slow rise of mental instability. People who play this game most likely played other shooters before, so there is this dissonance when the player has no issues headshotting an entire militia while the character is having a mental breakdown.

Binary Domain does have some frustrating parts though. All the boss fights are terrible. Still, I'd put BD over Spec Ops when it comes to combat. Both have very basic AI and your standard run of weapons, but the individual body damage in BD is a nice gimmick to play around with.

The best part about Binary Domain is how it surpasses expectations in my opinion. From all the videos and screens it looks like a really generic third person cover shooter - but it really is quite fun to play. They made it so that killing robots is really satisfying and everything moves at a brisk pace. I don't recall any area overstaying it's welcome. While the bosses can drag on a bit, they still fall apart in really cool ways.

The story is nothing special and I don't think any of the twists were particularly jaw dropping but it's a FINE story. Everything has a beginning, middle and end which is more than you can say for some of the plotlines in games from this year. I liked Dishonored but that game has a way worse plot than Binary Domain and mainly because the ending is so completely telegraphed and lackluster.

Also as mentioned: for $6 you seriously aren't losing anything.

It's a damn fine game. It shares some things with Vanquish and Ghost in the Shell. It is very corny though, so be prepared.
