BioShock 2 DLC On For March

Posted by Jeff (3400 posts) -
BioShock 2's multiplayer was probably one of the most surprising things for me when I reviewed the game earlier this month. Multiplayer? In BioShock? The whole thing smelled like a crazy decision made by crazy people. But hey, it's pretty good!

If you're currently playing through the BioShock 2 multiplayer, but wish you had a bit more to mess with, the game's developers are currently working on some additional content for the multiplayer mode. Titled the "Sinclair Solutions Test Pack," this chunk of DLC will raise the maximum player rank to 50, add two playable characters, 20 more trials, five masks, and and additional weapon upgrade for each of the game's guns. This pack is due out in March and will run you $5.00.

Even though I enjoyed the game's multiplayer mode, this doesn't immediately seem like a particularly exciting addition to me, since the only things that will really have a gameplay impact are the new weapon upgrades and perhaps some of the rewards that come with the level cap increase. The more interesting notion is that the press release announcing this thing also confirms 2K's intent to develop and release further content for later release. New multiplayer maps would be nice, and some more single-player components could be interesting, as well. Here are three shots of the additional content.

Multiplayer DLC for Bioshock... Now there's something I wasn't expecting

#4 Posted by Shinri (534 posts) -

Unfortunately, the multiplayer still seems to be laggy as hell.

The MP in Bioshock 2 did surprise me. But I don't know if I'm willing to pay for more.

As much as I love Bioshock 2, I don't think this small multiplayer addition is worth 5 dollars.

#7 Posted by gungrave45 (123 posts) -

I really think bioshock 2's multiplayer is underrated. I am defiantly buying this.

#8 Posted by blaze503 (189 posts) -

is this gonna come to PC?
#9 Posted by Yummylee (21206 posts) -

Come now, the multiplayer was a neat idea. But its hardly something I'm willing to pay extra towards for some new characters n ranks.

Meh, the multilplayer isn't good enough to make me say "Oh cool, DLC!"

#11 Posted by immike (714 posts) -

Cool! I love the multiplayer and 5 bucks for some more stuff sounds good to me!

#12 Posted by OneKillWonder_ (1691 posts) -

I don't like multiplayer enough to care about this, but for those who do like it, I suppose it's pretty cool. It's a shame the MP is so damn unbalanced, and that the aiming and shooting mechanics don't at all translate well to a MP game, because I thought it was very well set up with some cool ideas.

#13 Posted by TheMasterDS (2008 posts) -

Kinda bummed because the multiplayer isn't really something I want more of, it's something I want less of. If it were a few more hours of single player content I would buy it. A few characters I might not use and a few extra upgrade choices?

#14 Posted by Bionicicide (1213 posts) -

This is exactly what everyone feared with DLC, weapon enhancements online. This is how to kill your multiplayer.

#15 Posted by immike (714 posts) -
@Bionicicide: What do you mean? They didn't announce any new weapons.

I'm looking forward to it cause out of all of the games that came out late last year and early this year, I am having a blast with this one in particular. All the others have been beaten or are boring.

5 bucks for stuff that should have been in the game at release.

What's the over/under on this being like a 1.86 MB file?

An extra upgrade tier for weapons will only be available to those who bought this. How is that fair?

I'd be interested....if insufferable lag didn't make MP completely unplayable for me.

#26 Posted by jokingknight22 (39 posts) -

5 bucks would be worth it.  i really like the idea of more single player additions.
#27 Posted by Razputin (117 posts) -

Yo, wait, these are PC-version screenshots, right? 'Cause on my PS3 the multiplayer component for Bioshock 2 looks just WAAAY worse :/

#28 Posted by deerhaunter (75 posts) -

I have been trying really hard to love the multiplayer (I'm rank 18 so far), but the near unplayable lag makes it pretty difficult. It just feels absurd that games are devolving and not having dedicated servers when games from 10 years ago had them.

#29 Posted by immike (714 posts) -
@Bionicicide: Well, they didn't necessarily say there would be new weapons or plasmids. I think you may be jumping to conclusions. I admit, it is a sound conclusion, but not the final decision of the devs. If Modern Warfare 2 put in new weapons, they wouldn't necessarily give players an advantage. They can be balanced out as the weapons already are as of now in Bioshock 2. The pistol kills in 4-5 bullets and fires moderately fast, the machine gun takes a little more than half a clip but has the highest rate of fire and inaccuracy, and the grenade launcher kills in 2-3 grenades if the target is at full health (plus you have to lob the grenades right under them).

I'm one of the few that finds the guns really balanced and diverse. An example would be if they added a rocket launcher. They could balance it by making it take 2-3 shots (2 preferrably) per kill but making the rockets swirl and go a bit slower than the grenades. They could also make it so it contains only 4-6 rockets before needing to restock, etc etc. I just think that of any dev team to make new dlc weapons balanced, this team can do it just fine. I have been able to use a wide range of weapons and plasmids and still come in first place many times. I think we should give them a chance.

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/11/bioshock-2-players-report-multiplayer-freezing-issues/  And freezing isn't even my main issue. The matchmaking even when it's "working" couldn't be slower. Come on. "

And fix the lag, too. It's so stupid, because I am now very unlikely going to go back to their multiplayer componant, which they obvious spent time over. They missed their chance, though, and now there's no way in hell I'm going to buy their DLC. Get stuffed, 2K.
#31 Posted by kennybaese (658 posts) -

Well, I'm definitely more interested in the single player stuff they're planning on putting out with this thing. The multiplayer, what I've played of it is neat, but I'm not a big multiplayer person, so I think I'd rather have more single player stuff.

#32 Posted by angelkanarias (1440 posts) -

that was fast

#33 Posted by CornontheCobbe (2645 posts) -

Hmm, i think I'll avoid this one.

#34 Posted by StarFry64 (170 posts) -

Huh. I didn't know Stephen King was in this game. (re: second picture).

#35 Edited by yindotrunks (95 posts) -

I'm enjoying the BS2 multiplayer a lot, feels much more relaxed than something like MW2.  $5 is so close to $0 that I'll almost certainly be getting this.

edit: Unless these new upgrades are better than the existing ones, it shouldn't unbalance anything.  You can still only equip one upgrade at a time, you'll just now have an extra choice.  I guess if they're all markedly better than the existing ones that could lead to a problem.

#36 Posted by guiseppe (2837 posts) -

While I enjoy the MP, I wouldn't bother with it if it wasn't for the achievements. I can only hope they'll be putting out a patch for the freezing issues as well.

#37 Posted by jakob187 (21640 posts) -

The MP needs balance more than it needs DLC at the moment.  It also needs less lag, and the ability to punish the FUCK out of the jerk-offs that are trying to boost points for ranks in ADAM Grab.  Man, I love fucking up people's days in that mode because I actually want to PLAY.

#38 Posted by Hector (3352 posts) -

Yeah I thought the MP wasn't going to be good either. Then I played it and it rocks.

I think that new content sounds like a great idea! although I have only reached level 30 so far we will see how good its going to be.

They need to sort out the horrible connection issues before they release all this DLC.
