They should have used the artwork in the Booker reveal image (I'm assuming this is a mock-up but it was in our box art gallery for the game):

@mracoon: That definitely would have been better.

This isn't awful but with everything they have to work with, it's kinda disappointing. Sonbird would have been awesome or even the floating skyline or something. Kinda a wasted opportunity but oh well. The game's gonna be rad (I hope) so not a huge deal.

You know what had good boxart? Resistance 3. No dude on the front. Just a reddish-orange background and a cream colored skull. It looks pretty bleak and dark and guess what? The game is fucking bleak and dark.

This is just not good. Glad I'll be getting it on Steam and won't actually have a box.

Agreed. That was made by one designer with a distinct visual style. This feesl like the result of a focus group just like every other cover. I'm getting it on steam too, like I do almost every game these days, but for whatever reason I still always have a strong opinion on the cover images for games. I guess it's a clear indicator of how the game in question is being sold. And when it's like this, it's just so disappointing.

You just blew my mind.

I think a few in the video aren't exactly accurate but it's alarming anyways how many they are right about... and they just keep coming

yeah even if you take the iffy ones out there's still way too many

You'd think with the unique art and design that the folks at Irrational Games consistently put forth that they'd be able to come up with something better. I just hope that your stereotypical shooter dudebro will pick this up exclusively because of the box-art and wind up hell of confused when they find themselves playing, well, a Bioshock game.

That looks... generic and awful.

I don't know all of the legalities involved, but assume Marvel/Disney would have a problem with it:

So lame.

Do I get any special guns or skins if I pre-order?

EDIT: Oh, you actually do get a gun if you pre-order. Dunno if I should feel stupid or ashamed at the state of games, either way, this game is dead space to me.

#67 Posted by SirOptimusPrime (1992 posts) -

Whatever.

It's not like it stopped ICO from being great. Or the Uncharted games. Or Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Or...

You get my point.

#68 Posted by KoolAid (897 posts) -

Yes, the art choice is pretty bland. I don't hate it. But it is generic, looks like a lot of call of duty covers.

But here's the thing. I'd venture to say that no-one on this site is going to be buying Bioshock Infinite based on the cover art. We have access to reviews and the opinions of our friends etc. The box art is meant to capture the attention of people who don't really know what Bioshock is. People who see it in the Target or whatever, maybe people who don't follow games coverage, or older folks buying the game as a gift. So I speculate this is why they made the box art cover choices they did. WE might not like it, but there are good reasons they made these choices.

Plus I bet I'm just going to get it on Steam anyway.

I didn't think we'd be seeing the protagonist's face at all, seems kind of an odd choice and tone for a Bioshock game.

#70 Posted by Eaxis (911 posts) -

Does not set itself apart, won't win an award for best box art but not the worst either.

#71 Posted by Indiana_Jenkins (387 posts) -

That looks terrible, but it's also boxart.

In the end, it doesn't even matter.

I can't believe I accidentally typed out Linkin Park lyrics.

#72 Posted by jsnyder82 (730 posts) -

It's just a box. I don't give a shit.

#73 Posted by Zippedbinders (983 posts) -

Unless they are specifically doing this to confuse dudebros, its really disappointing. BioShock one sold pretty well without the main character holding a gun, same with BioShock 2. This thing will sell on name alone, so I don't know why they couldn't have a fancier cover. Maybe the more special editions will have a better one, like MGS4. Goddamn that CE cover was so much better than a close up of an over-textured Old Snake.

#74 Posted by verbalmedal (55 posts) -

Elizabeth should be on the cover

@Kerned

Nathan Drake has fallen on hard times.

Is this Drakes dark middle chapter?

Hi look. A Box art with the main hero holding a gun looking menacing, how original. I bet this is the NA boxart and the EU and the JP box art will be 100 times better. That is if they a different box art.

They should have that big robot-bird dude, similar to how big daddy was on Bioshock 1.

I really like it. Guess I'm a crazy person

I FUCKIN' LOVE RESISTANCE 3'S BOX ART...

(Caps lock off) Probably my favourite box art ever. I wish more games would have creative/interesting covers :(

Well, when you think about it, infinite does imply that some things are uncharted.

#80 Posted by Encephalon (1240 posts) -

Well... At least he's kinda sideways-looking. That's novel, I guess...

#81 Posted by nohthink (1223 posts) -

I'm guessing that's Booker?

#82 Posted by pornstorestiffi (4909 posts) -

It's box art folks, your not playing the box, but the game.

I love it. Too many games throw a bunch of nonsense onto the cover. This is simple and of a somewhat refined taste. Peppermint, yes.

#88 Posted by mellotronrules (1180 posts) -

a bro with a gun. not terrible, just boring.

come to think of it- the name is pretty bad as well. bioshock infinite? it's a strange combination that's simultaneously obtuse, generic and nondescriptive. i get the presumed 'shock' reference, but that's a little inside baseball for the general populace.

#89 Posted by ThePickle (4160 posts) -

Interesting that they're showing his face. I was expecting a situation like the first game where you never saw his face.

#90 Posted by ProfessorK (821 posts) -

Well, at least he's not a bald space marine.

#91 Edited by xyzygy (9936 posts) -

WTF? Why does the PS3 version say Only on PS3?!

I wonder if all that money Sony is throwing at them will pay off. According to VGchartz (not super accurate, I know, but it's around an estimate) the original Biochock sold twice as much on 360, mostly due to the late PS3 launch, and a simultaneous launch of B2 the 360 version sold almost 50% more of the PS3's sales.

I can also see the Move controls being pretty tacked on, too. I still think the Prime games for the Wii are the best FPS controls, but that has a lot to do with the gameplay differences between it and other shooters.

And that blimp in the top left corner looks really out of place, kinda fucks up the composition if you ask me.

#93 Posted by NegativeCero (2988 posts) -

Is there really market research that says a picture of some dude on covers is an easier sell because its pretty ridiculous.

#94 Posted by xaLieNxGrEyx (2605 posts) -

Disappointing boxart is very disappointing

#95 Posted by FreakAche (2951 posts) -

People are getting upset about the fact that it's some guy holding a gun? This is the one case in ten where that cliche actually seems fitting.

#96 Posted by Fearbeard (826 posts) -

That's not what I thought the main character looked like at all. I always thought he had some sort of mustache and a bowler hat.

I really wish they would have focused on the floating city itself, or at least had both Booker and Elizabeth on the cover.

Hopefully it includes an alternate cover. It should though because the original Bioshock PS3 version had one.

Let's hope the special edition box covers look better. They can usually get away with something more artistic for the people paying more.
