The third game in the BioShock series leaves the bottom of the sea behind for an entirely new setting - the floating city of Columbia, circa 1912. Come to retrieve a girl named Elizabeth, ex-detective Booker DeWitt finds more in store for him there than he could ever imagine.
E3 2011: Bioshock: Infinite Skyline Trailer
I'm digging everything I'm seeing about this game so far, and I loved everything about the first Bioshock, so I think I'll probably be playing this one.
I'm probably the only person mostly interested in this game mainly because of the underlying commentary. The work they did covering Objectivism with Bioshock 1 was really groundbreaking for a video game, IMO.
Columbia is the feminine name for America (not that the art didn't make it clear who the subject was). Ken Levine has said "...this is not a secret individual mission, this is the mission of a country that was really coming into its own and wanted to project a series of ideals out into the world in a very powerful way.". (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-08-12-irrationals-ken-levine-interview) Now, 1912 is widely recognized as the point where the USA looked outward -- it became an empire. This was the start of the Banana wars, where the US started militarily pushing around Central America.
It's seems pretty clear that this is going to be some sort of commentary on the American Empire. It'll be interesting to see how they thread the needle, because, usually, just acknowledging it as an empire will anger the Fox News crowd.
