Yep. I myself got as far as buying Atlas Shrugged for cheap in an airport bookstore, a year or so post bioshock but haven't touched a page. Still kinda funny to see people rant or rave about objectivism like it's the newest hottest political belief for nerds. I think BIoshock was the only reason Ron Paul had the internet popularity he did.

@XII_Sniper: If people actually started to get into objectivism after playing Bioshock, I'd have to wonder if they were playing the same game. It's as close to a critique of unregulated capitalism, or objectivism, as gaming has ever reached. That said, Ayn Rand has been one of the most popular "philosophers" in the US for a while so clearly she taps into something people believe in already, namely that their social system is the best one possible... D:.

Well Rapture is just a giant example of how that kind of society could fail, but at the same time, Andrew Ryan isn't portrayed as completely evil and corrupt, merely insanely paranoid. Also devs cited Atlas Shugged as a major influence over the story.

Whether it's a warning tale or not, the fact is I believe devs DID cite Rand, and people got pretty into Bioshock at the time, so I'm not surprised some picked up her stuff after. Once again, I've read like... a page of her writings, so I have little idea about what objectivism is, really other than it being kinda libertarian, despite most libs I know hate her hahah.

But I don't think it's a critique on unregulated capitalism so much as.. unregulated science. There's a lot of talk in that game of Rapture taking moral issues out of scientific research, and of course the entire conflict is started by a scientific discovery.

Not to get too involved as it's been about 3 years since I last played Bioshock, but I got the feeling from that game is that people like Andrew Ryan, Sander Cohen etc can never reach their goals because of inherently human flaws and the problem was with the citizens of Rapture, not to much the system. It was jealousy, greed and paranoia which brought the end of Rapture, not the unregulated capitalism that Ryan allowed. Like I say, it's been a while.

To give an obvious example: guns and ammunition are sold from vending machines, as are genetic modifcations, exactly the kind of insane lack of regulation that could turn Bioshock from glitzy post-war utopia to dystopia. And the ideals of the society as stated by Andrew Ryan in the opening ctuscene pertain not just to scientific freedom, but also the freedom for 'the great' to do whatever they want no matter what the consequences: what these great men do flows down into the society as services that can be bought and sold without concern for the moral consequences, such as those scientific discoveries. There's also digs at the 'artiste' and the plastic surgeon (it has been a while since I played through the whole game, so I'm sure there are other examples), those who "create beauty" for profit, but when not held back by any constraint become monstrous. The only kind of society that would allow this is an extreme form of economic libertarianism, which is counterposed to "the man in Washington" and the "man in Moscow". Fontane Industries might be another point of reference back to economics.

I think what it comes down to is that explicit critiques of capitalism are risky, especially in a mass-market medium like videogames, so it has been attacked under the codeword "objectivism". The most objectivist society in the Western world is the United States, and it is clearly post-war Americana the game is inspired by...
