A well crafted singleplayer tale which will leave you in awe 0

No Gods or Kings, Only ManFrom a distance, 2K's latest Blockbuster, Bioshock, might just look like a pretty first-person shooter, but it's actually much more. Calling it a "pretty shooter", does the game a disservice and sounds insulting considering the level of creativity, and atmosphere Bioshock achieves. Bioshock is best described as an interactive sci-fi mystery novel. Along with being interlaced with literary references t...

Bioshock truly is a memorable creation. 0

You are a man known as Jack, who finds himself drowning in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean after his plane crashes down. However, he is rescued from certain death by the appearance of some sort of lighthouse situated on the water itself. Too weary and desperate to consider this peculiarity for more than a moment, Jack swims to the towering building in a moment of pure introductory brilliance and finds himself in its 1960s-esque interior. Descending down after gathering himself properly, he disc...

No gods or kings, only AWESOME 0

WARNING: LOTS OF SPOILERSI heard of Bioshock and was monitoring it all the way from day 1 back when it was announced to the public on E3 2006. I was really impressed by the unusual setting, stunning graphics, and interesting concepts. I watched all the trailers and I was pretty sure I had an idea of what Bioshock will be like when released. However, I had NO IDEA just how amazing it would be when it came out. The moment I came up from the depths of the ocean gasping for air, surrounded in burnin...

A philosophical masterpiece to remember. 0

Unless you have been living on the dark side of the Moon in recent years, it is likely that you have already heard of BioShock. It generated enormous hype before launch, and has now gained one of the largest aggregate critical review scores ever (according to Metacritic with 96 out of 100, coincidentally the same as Half-Life 2). Whilst the game does have a number of minor flaws, including a final lacklustre ending and sporadic difficultly problems, it is very clear that BioShock is still a fant...

Seven years later and it's still pretty great. 0

Bioshock was hailed as an almost instant classic when it came out in 2007. I didn’t personally first play it until 2009 or 2010, finished it once, and didn’t finish it again until just now. Seven years after its initial release, Bioshock holds up exceptionally well. It still looks pretty great, it still has some very effective atmosphere, it still has a very good story that could never have quite the same impact outside of video games. And yes, Bioshock still works really well as a g...

    A look back 0

This review contains spoilers for both Bioshock and Bioshock InfiniteSix years ago Bioshock was released to universal praise and went on to win several Game of the Year awards. It’s no secret that many gamers view it as a modern masterpiece especially because of its complex story and themes. Now that some time has passed and Bioshock Infinite, like its predecessor, has left most of the gaming world in awe I thought it would be fitting to take a look at the first Bioshock. Is it really the maste...

Brilliant, astonishing, just plain amazing! 0

Wow. Once in a while, there will be this one game that is so astonishing that you feel lucky just being to play it. Since Resident Evil 4 debuted on Gamecube two years ago, there has not been one game that I feel has matched it. No I am wrong. BioShock is not only the game of the year, but one of the best games ever. BioShock will be talked about for years to come and anyone that owns an Xbox 360 or decent PC should buy it without a question. Immersion is not always the most successful element t...

    BioShock Review 0

When I thought new Sci-fi shooters began to overlap, I was contradicted after purchasing BioShock. The primary difference this game has (although it has numerous differences to today's shooters) is its emphasis on making decisions. At first when you are given the choices in this game, they don't seem so heavy, but as you play through this game you will see their significance. Despite a lack of multiplayer, BioShock is a very powerful shooter that gamers out there should not miss. The Plot- It is ...

    Surprisingly good! 0

Bought this game after my exams as so many people recommended it. I had previously stayed away from it as I thought it looked frightening and I simply cannot play scary games but eventually I gave in. I thought this game would have more of a gameplay driven game but to my liking I found it was not as I started to play the game I quickly became engrossed in a magnificent storyline. The story which I won't go into is simply one of the best you can experience in a video game and has major twists a...

...but Bioshock is amazing.  Beyond what the critics say it is the voice of the gamers that should be noted most of all.  It is hard to find many who didn't like Bioshock and out of the few who didn't it is even harder to find any who can coherently convey why they didn't enjoy the game. The game provides a unique and grotesque narrative that covers everything from Big Brother, Big Business, governance, and the tragedy of being human and powerful.  A lot of paranormal activity is tossed in which ...

A remarkably detailed, masterfully wrought political shooter. 1

Politics are old hat for video games, and have been for quite some time. Ever since Big Boss contemplated the soldier’s place in the world, games have worked meaningful political messages into their narratives. So it should not be surprising that BioShock, released in 2007, was able to achieve this task, and indeed, that alone is not very noteworthy. What is noteworthy, however, is how well the game does it. Not only is BioShock a complex, thought-out treatise on the dangers of objectivism and ...

Once you've got this game installed and running, prepare for an amazing trip under the sea into this genre defining game. Final Thoughts: BioShock 0

(Note: there are NO MAJOR SPOILERS in this review) What is BioShock? Those who have played it know what it is. But those who haven't played it probably only know a few things: it takes place underwater, has something to do with Ayn Rand, and features guys in big diving suits protecting creepy little girls. Going in, that's pretty much all I really knew about it, too. And that's all sort of correct... sort of. Some of the major ideas and backdrops of BioShock are indeed based on the writings of...

    Bioshock Xbox 360 Review 0

Upon returning from my holidays in the August of 2007, I was greeted by a parcel. After opening It I was pleased to discover that it was the limited edition of Bioshock, a story driven First person shooter from Irrational Games (creators of the hugely popular System Shock series).I hadn't played the previous System Shock games, so I was unaware of what to expect, little did I know I was about to experience one of the most thrilling and enjoyable single player games on the Xbox 360. /* I feel I n...

BioShock: frighteningly polished, terribly creepy, and eerily engaging 0

I showed up late to the BioShock party; everyone had gone insane and wanted to kill me... nightmarishly fun antics ensued. Grab a wrench... it's party timeI’m not blowing anyone’s mind when I lament that there is simply more quality content available than I’ll ever be able to consume in my lifetime. Because of this, I’m left with choices. I have to decide which games, books, movies, TV shows, etc. I want to consume before I die. So how do I decide what stuff I want to cram into my ear balls and ...

    BioShock Review 0

Shooters have come and gone over the course of the past many years, many of them slipping by us because the industry has become so overwhelming inflated by them. What I think defines a good shooter game is dependent upon how well the core mechanics of the game play out. Is the game fun? Are the controls in sync with what’s happening on the screen, or more importantly, does the action flow or feel fluid? But the question, “does the game tell a good story,” almost never crosses my mind. Most fast ...

The Best Game Ever Made Period 0

I suppose I can forgive the game's questionably quick ending, for the rest of the journey is an unforgettable one. From the moment you discover the peculiar bathysphere, to discovering the underwater city's dark secret, Bioshock is an immensely invigorating experience with great balanced FPS gameplay that never feels too macho paired with fun, light RPG elements and one of the best narratives and writing in video game history. I've never met someone who has played a video game who hasn't loved ...

Bioshock is a very good looking game with a world you want to explore and a story you won’t want to stop playing. The Protagonist is someone you who you like and when his back story is slowly revealed you always want know more about him. The pacing is good with a nice mix of puzzles and combat there are some points when the game feels like a survival horror game which is done extremely well.  The game takes a lot from Systemshock but not enough. After finishing Bioshock you’ll want to play Bi...

Played Through in Spring 09. So…you play as this Airline Passenger…who is the sole survivor of a plane crash in the ocean. Good for him, there’s a light house only a light swim away. Bad for him, that light house is actually the gateway to a fallen psychopathic, telekinetic, dentally deficient society bubbling under the sea. Hope you stowed away some airline peanuts in your pocket…you might get peckish. Man…BioShock. …such an engrossing experience. I say the word experience, because some times,...

How deep does the rabbit hole go? 1

Overview"A man chooses, a slave obeys."  BioShock is simply a great, atmospheric game, with beautiful graphics and gameplay to match. Some would say it's a horror FPS game, but it's not that scary, I'd say it's a first person shooter game with post-apocalyptic features (although i suppose it's more accurate to say steampunk) and some very light RPG elements. In the game the protagonist named Jack, is flying over the Atlantic Ocean during 1960. Unfortunately, there is a malfunction and the...

Not as good as it's hyped up to be 2

Well I was disappointed with Bioshock. Everyone makes such a big deal out of it, how it's one of the best games ever and bla bla, but I just didn't get into it. Do I think it's a quality game? Yeah. But no matter how much quality there is in a game, if it doesn't hook me, it doesn't! I think one of the big failures of the game is that it didn't make me interested in its world. I just was never that curious about rapture and what had happened there. I had previously read somewhere some bits and p...

    Bioshock PC 0

This game presents a fairly extraordinary atmosphere, but one you loathe by the end. It is claustrophobic, oppressive and bleak, informed by a body of literature headed by Ayn Rand and other pioneers of the dystopian metropolis. The effort and detail is remarkable, but the game ends on a rather undecided note. It feels like is begins to construct something sizable, rich and diverse, but concentrates so single-mindedly on building up an overwhelming atmosphere that the conclusion feels almost lik...

BIOSHOCK DEVELOPER: 2K GAMES. The year is 1960. On board a plane flying across the Atlantic Ocean, you play as a faceless protagonist known as Jack. When the plane crashes into the sea, you take salvation by swimming ashore to a lighthouse. There's hardly anything I could say (or need to say) about Bioshock that hasn't already been said countless times. This is one of the definitive games in the first-person genre, right alongside the original Half-Life and Deus Ex, for players who want a fully realized world to explore and riveting storyline to become engrossed with. It's so rare for a game to hit a home run across so many facets, but Ken Lavine and the team behind Bioshock managed to pull it off. Dystopias Are Fun 0

Every few years we get a game that truly demonstrates what art is? A game that truly shows that our medium isn’t about just entertainment and providing a creative outlet; to me that is the definition of art though. If you look at games such as System Shock 2, Half-Life 2, and the original Deus Ex those are all art. How do you collectively add everything from graphics, sound, atmosphere, and actual literary storytelling into a game though? Most people these days see it as a waste of time and noth...

    Bioshock is Essentially SS2 1

After buying this game in a discount, I was very pleased with the graphical performance and the overall feel of bioshock. After a few hours, I realized that bioshock is essentially system shock 2. Cross out all the names, everything that was electro powered then, is steam powered now. Also, SS2 difficulty was somewhere between difficult to impossible. 2k realizing this decided that it would be better to tweak the difficulty, decided it would be appropriate to add all the things you need, remove ...

Does a man require BioShock? Yes, says the man reviewing. 0

This game presents itself wonderfully, from the music to the beautiful style of the underwater city and the brilliant voice work, putting this game a class above most. The game feels very polished and you can get a real sense of progress throughout the game. There are a few main story characters, they distinguish themselves nicely and are very exaggerated to fit into the world. Without spoiling the game the story unfolds nicely, comes to a fitting conclusion and overall feels solid, naturally ...

    One of the greats 0

Bioshock is without a doubt in my top 5 greatest games. It has a perfect story line, great voice acting, polished gameplay, and just a perfect and amazing enviroment that will all keep you interested from start to finish. Bioshock is a story about this man Andrew Ryan who sought to a create a city under the ocean where he would bring many artists and scientists so they could not be interrupted by religion or petty morality. And a nameless hero ends up in the middle of it all....

I spent my free time reading every article, watching every video interview, and contributing to every forum about what the game might have in store for us hardcore gamers.  I was very disappointed once I finished my first play through of Bioshock, and could not complete my second due to the fact that the game was so linear and boring. You are introduced to many of the games mechanics almost right off the b...

Bioshock is a game of many pleasures 0

Bioshock is a game of many pleasures, it has great story telling, great atmosphere and this all leads to it having the best immersion that I've ever seen in a game. But, even though all these points really make it stand out from the crowd, they are also it's main flaw, in that it seems to forget them after a while and for me this really made much of the second half of the game boring. Don't get me wrong, I loved almost every minute of Bioshock and when you first enter Rapture I must admit that I...

Great for a FPS, but not more 0

I finally managed to play Bioshock. I picked the PC version instead of the PS3 one, since it was quite a bit cheaper and because it had support for the Xbox360 controller. The controller support works for most part extremely well, you flip a switch in the option menu and the whole thing behaves pretty much like a console game and works out of the box without more configuration. Its really nice to see that at least some PC games these days allow you to use the game console interface on the PC ...

Rapture, a beautiful and creepy place to live in 0

Bioshock is one of those games which showed that games can also be a form of art. The 60's style of game is superbly designed. The choice between morality and immorality in the game will leave the player pondering about their decisions. Story - The game has got great story with a great plot twist in between. The way the story is narrated itself is amazing within the environment instead of using cut scenes. Although said the game has 3 endings, two of them are pretty similar. May be if our gen...

I must say this is one of my favorite PC games of all time. The rich atmosphere, and the sheer detail of the technology was the biggest draw for me. Bioshock goes above and beyond the call of most first person shooters.  The game is not only a great shooter, it is also has a great story, has great gameplay mechanics (upgrades, etc), and has a great interface.  The game's story is very unique and really pulls the player in.  The game has MANY ways to upgrade your character, from new weapons to weapon upgrades to tonics to extra plasmids and beyond.  The enemies in the game are unique and well-designed and the Big Daddies with the little girls...

I was semi aware of BioShock since shortly after it came out, but only picked it up during the Steam summer camp sale in 2011.  I had found out a few things about it and it reminded me of a few of the things I liked from the Deus Ex series so I had added BioShock and BioShock 2 to my Steam wish list, then they went on sale.  I figured I’d just get the first one and then if I liked it I’d grab the second next time it went on sale.  After playing BioShock, I’m wishing I would have bought...

Not a very creative title. I suppose I could have put a bit more effort into it. Although the same could be said about Ken Levine and The Biggest Disappointment in Gaming History… Hey, that’s not a bad title. BioShock’s biggest problem is that it doesn’t live up to the incredibly high expectations set by the master and commander Levine, hell, it doesn’t even live up to the mediocre expectations of any shooter/RPG/epic story game. The game starts out on a solid premise, underwater dystopia? Awes...

BioShock is a stunning first-person shooter from 2K Games on the surface, but it's so much more when you dig deeper into the game. It is the tale of one man's elusive fantasy which, in turn becomes a secluded city's worst nightmare. The game begins with a plane crash-- your plane crash-- and your the only survivor among the wreckage. As you float in the sea of the Atlantic you notice a lighthouse is your only hope of salvation, as you enter it, a bathysphere lies in wait for your arrival to tak...

From the tense and mysterious start to the pulse pounding conclusion i LOVED Bioshock. The graphics and sound are some of the best i have ever experienced in a game and the general atmosphere, while occasionally nerve wrecking, is brilliant.
