from wikipedia:
"Birdo's gender has changed throughout various American game versions, but has always been male in Japan. In the original manual for Super Mario Bros. 2, Birdo is referred to as male that believes he is female, and would liked to be called Birdetta."
also:
"In addition, the trailer for the Wii game Captain Rainbow is narrated by Birdo using a distinctly male voice, so it can be supposed Birdo is transvestite"

Birdo is a male, Yoshi is female because she lays eggs. Has your world just been flipped upside down?

Yes. Birdo is a male character who wears a bow. Birdo actually doesn't refer to himself as Birdo, rather, he calls himself Birdette.
Look it up, this stuff is 100% true.

I've always thought of Birdo/Catherine/Birdetta as a guy, because he started at as a guy in 夢工場 ドキドキパニック (Doki Doki Panic), then America tried to confuse him into thinking he was a girl. ;)

Male seahorses give birth to baby seahorses. Doesn't make them any less of men.

Birdo is a man, and no one can convince me otherwise. Nintendo and sexually-insecures can deny it all they want.

I think it's appropriate to add Birdo to the GLBT concept.
