The above video (taken by Gamer365) comes straight from Gamescom, where Grasshopper Manufacture is reportedly showing its latest game, a downloadable, side-scrolling action title called Black Knight Sword. While the camera man's maddening tendency to focus away from the action periodically detracts, the footage shows a mixture of hack-and-slash gameplay and a sort of puppet-show, paper cutout style of artwork that looks damn nifty. However, there is one, small problem with all of this. Up until this video started making the rounds, no one even knew this game existed.

In fact, technically, it still doesn't exist, for as we've learned in recent weeks, video games cannot actually exist until they have been announced via press release and/or a Game Informer cover story. To declare otherwise would be, at best, "shoddy journalism," and at worst, tear a hole in the very fabric of reality as we know it.

And yet, here sits this video, seeming proof positive that Black Knight Sword does very much exist, and does very much look kind of cool, despite a total lack of press release, cover story, or any of the typical tools we writers rely upon to do our jobs and maintain the desperately worn thread of our personal sanity. This video's existence is hacking away at that thread right now, driving me to the brink of utter madness.

Rather than think too much more about this, I'll just leave this other video here (featuring an interview with Akira Yamaoka by German TV show GamesWorld) for your perusal, and retreat to the darkest corner of my office to rock back and forth gently while sobbingly repeating the words "Black Knight Sword how can you exist? Black Knight Sword, how can I persist!" over and over, like some ceaseless, psychotic roundelay.

I adore the art style and sound design. A game that feels like this should never be called "Black Knight Sword". They need something akin to what the name "LittleBigPlanet" achieved. What is it with Grasshopper and names as of late? Though, I'll give them "Lollipop Chainsaw".

Why the hell do people pan away from the footage? Drives me nuts when I'm trying to catch gameplay from a new game and instead they show some stone-faced people playing.

Anyway, the dude does the Scrooge McDuck pogo jump, so I'm sold.

I wish journalists stopped picking the Gearbox guy just because he tried to defend the indefensible Duke Nukem Forever. That Ars Tecnica article is very, very shallow and low - the Eurogamer article it mentions may have been mostly accurate, but Ars Tecnica ignored that much of the info presented had already been said by the developer ***months ago***. That's what the guy was complaining about, and he was right - I remember how happy I was to know there would be more Borderlands way back in January or February.

In other words, yes, *it was shoddy journalism*. (Not that's anything new when it comes to gaming journalism. Only sports journalism manages to be worse.) Just as using one new game shoddily announced to beat on a dead horse *also* is shoddy journalism... Shoddiness seems to be contagious, doesn't it?

I like when games just come out and show gameplay on their reveal, doing it on their announcement is even cooler. It is much better than "Hey we paid Blur a bunch of money to make this trailer based off some concept art we made."

@fabiosooner His claim of shoddy journalism had nothing to do with DNF, it was about Borderlands 2 being revealed before it was officially announced

Wow, Grasshopper is being super productive right now or is it because it has a large development team? Kinda reminds me of Double Fine's recent development strategy.

Geez, it's like every game Grasshopper touches is a must-buy for me. They've been on such a role lately between No More Heroes, Shadows of the Damned, it just keeps getting better and better.

Between this and Grasshoppers schmup, I'm SO happy they're supporting DLGs. I feel like, far too often, Japanese developers ignore the XBLA, Steam and PSN in favor of stupid garbage like PSP.

Did anyone else notice that the way the black knight holds his sword whilst running is identical to the way Travis holds his lightsaber and how Juliet holds her chainsaw (at least from the screenshots) while doing the same.

I guess someone over there really likes that stance, or maybe I'm seeing something that isn't there.

I think this game is proof that platformers have benefited from the introduction of sweeping slash moves rather than piercing attacks. Seemed like the character controls like something out of the Genesis. That's not entirely bad, but could prove to be unnecessarily frustrating if that's the only kind of attack you have in the game.
