Peter Molyneux's Black and White franchise places you in the shoes of a god.

An interesting attempt by Peter Molyneux to produce a god-game coupled with a pet simulator like that found in the Tamagotchi series. As a deity figure, the player must manage to infect the hearts of the people, aid them in their struggle to master civilization, and rear their gigantic pet creature. Your creature changes its look depending on how the player encourages/punishes behavior, and the player has free reign to do what they want with their people.
