This is but one of the two released screenshots for Bodycount.
Black. I feel like my own opinion of Criterion's first-person shooter have been well-established... well, provided you listen to the podcast, anyway. It's weird to me that Codemasters is really pushing its new first-person shooter, Bodycount, as being from the "co-creator and designer of Black," Stuart Black. Black (the game) didn't exactly go on to leave an especially lasting impact on shooters. Heck, I'd expect that a decent number of people don't even remember it at all. But I digress.

Today, Codemasters released two screenshots of the game, which... uh... look a lot like Black to me. Sadly, there's no mention of this being "gunporn 2.0" and I haven't seen anything close to "bullets are our babies" in the released material. That said, the provided quotes say the exact right things that I want to see when someone says they're making a first-person shooter. Here's one from the game's executive producer, Tom Gillo:

“Our core focus for Bodycount is to deliver best-in-class gun play that places the gamer at the heart of the experience,” said Executive Producer Tom Gillo. “From the jaw-dropping devastation caused by firing into enemies or shredding the world around you in a hail of bullets, Bodycount will crystalize that moment of pulling the trigger into an exhilarating sensory overload of action.”

Firing guns into enemy targets should feel positively devastating. Firing a gun should feel like an intensely destructive act. That's one of the things that Black came closest to delivering on, but the constant inclusion of exploding barrels made it all feel like a photo hunt game. "Find the exploding barrel, shoot it, and move forward!"

Oh, hey! Here's the other one!
Of course, that all sounds a bit more harsh than it should. Black was actually a really neat game, in spots. It just felt like it was being held back somehow, like the design of the levels and environments didn't quite mesh with the firearms well enough.

If there's anything that signifies that this game is coming from dudes who worked on Black, it's this Stuart Black quote:

"If Race Driver: GRID was all about the purity of racing, then everything in Bodycount is absolutely centered on the bullet and its impact on the world."

Yep. That sounds about right. The game is currently set for release in Q1 2011 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

That's great and all, but will it compare to Destruction 2.0 in Bad Company 2 or Red Faction Guerrilla's GeoMod 2.0?  I mean, seriously...shit blows up real pretty in those games.

My biggest problem with Black was that even when you were devastating stuff, it all still felt very scripted.  With something like Bad Company 2 or Red Faction Guerrilla, the destruction just feels dynamic and awesome!

Hey Jeff, I don´t really get your hate for Killer In.. uh I mean Black. It was a kinda cool shooter. Simplistic and  arcadey, like Timesplitters. I really liked playing through this campaign, though only once and on normal.
But hey, this game was FAR from being bad. You want a bad FPS? Try Painkiller Overdose or something. Just stop hatin´ Black

#17 Edited by Vager (1645 posts) - 3 years, 3 months ago

That quote makes the game seem awesome.

i played a little bit of Black recently.  it was barely mediocre.  absolutely nothing special about it.  i would never pick up a game that made me recall my hours with Black b/c there's no reason to ever think about them again.

Can't wait to play Black 2.

I would prefer " Massive Corpse Accumulation: It's starting to smell....."

I feel like the Battlefield games (BC2 especially) handles the gun play and bullet effects closest to how I'd want a game to deal with them, i.e. the bullets have an actual trajectory, rather than moving in a laser straight line, you can actually see sniper rounds fall to the ground at long ranges

what I'd really like someone to make is a full bullet physics simulation, where each bullet is a fully rendered 3D object and muzzle velocity and bullet trajectory are controlled by a physics engine and how much gunpowder is in the cartridge for that particular gun and the actual mechanics of how that gun works...
of course, the amount that such an effort would add to a game would not be worth the amount of computing resources needed to actually run it... but still, I think it'd be fun to try

It does look like Black... which isn't good seeing as how that was a PS2-era game.

LOVED black back in the day.  Played through it 3 times (but that was mostly because I was a poor and had nothing else to play).  Will be keeping an eye on this!

'Extremely Generic Shooter'

#32 Posted by Lambert (404 posts) - 3 years, 3 months ago

Codemasters can't make shooters for shit. Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, and the other game which involved Nazis invading the US. Not interested in this at all. Stick to making racers.

Yet more FPS's... Oh the excitement... Yawn. (Sarcastic tones couldn't compete with how I just imagined myself saying that.)

In what way?  There's no tawdry slow mo effects for no good reason, no glossy black guns for no reason and no ridiculous unjustified hyperbole that tries to make the game seem like its the most SP FPS ever released.  Black wasn't awful, but it also wasn't very good at all.  BC2 isn't the best SP FPS but it is the best MP Battlefield experience to date and a lot of that has to do with the class streamlining, useful 3D spotting mechanic, VOIP between squadmates and Destruction 2.0 kills.

Wow, I didn't think anybody other than me even remembered Operation Body Count, much less wanted to make a remake. You learn something new every day.

Seems kinda generic so far. I hope they do something interesting with it.

YES!  Even if the screenshots aren't great - I'm totally hyped for this.

Codemasters seems to only be afloat because of their racers.

After the phailiure that was OFP2, I don't think anyone should hype this game in the slightest.

O dude a new Timesplitters would be so damn cool

the only people who remember black are those who had only a PS2 last gen, apparently. For some reason, whenever I hear people speak fondly of that game they ALWAYS only had a PS2.
