The Mechromancer, in all her pigtailed glory.

Gearbox panels at the various PAX conferences each year are usually good for at least one or two good bits of useful new information and/or delightful fan service. At last year's PAX Prime, it was when Randy Pitchford went full Oprah and gave everyone in the audience a free code good for one copy of Borderlands 2 upon its release. At this year's PAX East, the Borderlands 2 crew showed off a new character class that will come following the game's launch.

Dubbed the Mechromancer, this female character is essentially a cyborg. The full-breadth of her human/machine hybrid abilities aren't yet known, but it was stated that she would be able to control a large robot named D374-TP (which translates to "Deathtrap").

This new class won't be day one DLC. In fact, it hasn't even been fully developed yet. Gearbox showed off some concept art for the character, but beyond that wouldn't commit to a specific release day or price beyond "post-launch" and "comparable" to other, similar DLC.

If you're looking for something a tad more substantial than the usual dangled tidbits from industry panels, our man Jeff got himself an extended look at Borderlands 2 at the show, which you can read all about right here.

Cant wait for more Borderlands.

And finally got that quest!

Looks cool.

I am really liking the classes. I hope what Jeff was saying is true about the boss fights. The only one I found interesting was General Knoxx and even that one is pretty mediocre.

#5 Posted by Napalm (9020 posts) -

I really want to play that.

#6 Posted by Arker101 (1474 posts) -

It's free to those who preorder, and it's coming out 2-3 months after release, that's from the BL2 forums.

It sounds neat and there isn't any evidence that she's been stripped out of the game. I'm worried about how this class will compare against the soldier. I hope it won't make him obsolete.

#7 Posted by X19 (2306 posts) -

Interesting but I'm playing the Siren class as it's the most fun imo.

#8 Posted by Morrow (1829 posts) -

Great style, too bad you won't see it while playing... Borderlands really needs a third-person view :(

#9 Posted by adoggz (2068 posts) -

she looks hot ...... what?

#10 Posted by IBurningStar (2173 posts) -

So she like...romances mechs? Do I get to choose if I want to romance a boy or a girl robot?

#11 Posted by Otzlowe (337 posts) -

Not crazy about those pig tails, but hey, the class sounds pretty cool.

#12 Posted by Mezmero (1908 posts) -

How long have games cost more than $60? We might as well start paying $90 bucks for new releases with unlimited support since I'm gonna get the DLC later like a sucker anyway. We'll probably be paying $90 a game when the next generation hits.

#13 Posted by EuanDewar (4942 posts) -

That's a prettttyyy fucking good name

#14 Posted by Razputin (117 posts) -

She seems cool, clearly inspired by the Necromancer from Diablo II... who was my favourite class. Might as well wait to buy Borderlands 2 until she gets implemented - other sources say that she is supposed to be a free DLC.

#15 Posted by Jeffk38uk (715 posts) -

Adding new classes as cheap DLC would actually be compelling given how you can always have more and more vault hunters. That and having a large character customisation system in place, huge choice of looks and powers.

oh my god is she a fembot? PROGRESSIVE STUFF GEARBOX, GOOD SHOW

#17 Posted by TaliciaDragonsong (8699 posts) -

Not sure how big the story is this time when it comes to characters personally, but I'd love it if the added her and gave her her own reason to do the stuff.
Besides, just when you thought it couldn't get any crazier after the Gunzerker and the ninja they come up with a Mechromancer.

I love it.

She actually looks pretty neat. I wasn't hugely interested in Borderlands 1, but 2 keeps catching my eye more and more lately.

#19 Posted by AnjinM (110 posts) -

That is what I immediately thought when I first read the name. I know what they are riffing on necromancer, but they really need to rethink the name.

#20 Posted by dropabombonit (1490 posts) -

It seems a cool idea, can't wait for the full game

#21 Posted by Lazyaza (2184 posts) -

Sucks shes the preorder/dlc character, would be better to have her in the main game for everybody to play.

#22 Posted by RetroVirus (1473 posts) -
@IBurningStar You can only romance one but then you realize that robots don't have emotions, and it turns into a Kronenberg movie.

Joy Puke!

#24 Posted by Stete (738 posts) -

Yep, definitely waiting until the inevitable ultimate edition comes out.

#25 Posted by PositivelyGreg (72 posts) -

I'd definitely be a mechromancerromancer

romance some mechs this fall

#28 Posted by Hef (1115 posts) -

Mechromancer is probably the best class name for a sci-fi RPG I've ever heard. I really wish this was coming out on launch day.

#29 Posted by dvorak (1496 posts) -

Too bad it's going to be DLC, because that would have been the class I played.

I'd love it if this were free DLC... but I'd love it even more if they made a whole Mechromancer-themed quest line, complete with new areas and enemies. I'd gladly pay five or ten bucks extra for that.

Also, the link you posted leads to an amazon ad for a solid state drive. Re-check that shit, my friend.

Can't wait to romance some mech's! Gearbox going all Bioware on us.

#32 Posted by Shu (17 posts) -

Mechromancer souds like a capcom fighting game =t

#33 Posted by tourgen (4504 posts) -

huh. sounds pretty cool. more of a full-up pet class. I can get into that.

#35 Posted by blacklab (1557 posts) -

Cannot, cannot, cannot wait for more Borderlands!

#36 Posted by BlatantNinja23 (930 posts) -

I kinda wish it was day one dlc

You could enable third person in original Borderlands with some .ini tweaks.
And later with a simple fanmade launcher.

It's a free DLC for pre orders.
#40 Posted by spazmaster666 (1968 posts) -

Not a problem for me since there's a 100% chance that I'll be preordering this game (I played the SHIT out of Borderlands), but I'll probably be playing a Siren for the majority of Borderlands 2 (as I did for Borderlands 1).

#41 Edited by I_smell (3924 posts) -

I don't really know a lot about Borderlands, but "Mechromancer" is a pretty great name for a thing.

EDIT- Oh my god it's like "MECH ROMANCER" !

#42 Posted by Applederp (116 posts) -

Announcing DLC months before the game is even released?

Ok?

#43 Posted by Funkydupe (3320 posts) -

Mechromancer? I really like that name for a class.

#44 Posted by shodan2020 (669 posts) -

Mechromancer? Is this class based off of the game Thousand Arms except with mechs? If so, this game is gonna be awesome.

#45 Posted by Seraphim84 (410 posts) -

I like the term "full Oprah". It implies other amounts of Oprah.

#46 Posted by wolf_blitzer85 (5256 posts) -

Oh wow that looks pretty cool. I seriously cannot wait to get my hands on this game. Borderlands 1 was fantastic aside from it's problems. I really hope they give the PC version a little more attention than last time.

She looks like a steampunk Pippi Longstocking.

I approve.
