There's an entire mission revolving around mutants with spin-off names of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and one of the characters says, "Die bitch, die bitch, die," in reference to the Vanilla Ice song used in the second feature film.
I kind of have to agree with you but also feel compelled to say go fuck yourself. Kind of a catch 22, huh?
Yup, video game humor is pretty atrocious. This game really is fucking stupid though and it shows right out the gate. Borderlands 1 had one of the gayest characters ever (Claptrap) and was just a bad unfunny game. This game does it twice as unfunny.
I'm glad there is some gamers out there who can see past the crap that is this and hope that maybe one day we will get a good game that doesn't try to be funny (too hard to be funny).
Funny games I can think of since I'm sure someone will go "hurr you don't know humor" - well, Sam N max - Full Throttle - Indiana Jones & Fate of Atlantis ... oh wait, only Lucasarts games back in the 90s were pretty funny. I can't think of a GOD DAMN GAME IN the past 12 years that has been funny!
It's just trying a little too hard way too often. Not every line of dialog has to be an amazing zinger. I feel they should have just cut some of the dialog shorter.
Also jokes like the bonerfarts quest are the worst of the worst. It's something that might be funny in some situations but in a game it's really forced. I find all the Claptrap banter pretty good.

Pick one, any one. There you go.
It does come off as forced in a lot of places.
Did a mission recently where i had to secretly follow a character into a secret cave and the whole time he's walking he's all "i can't wait to get to my stash and be myself where no one will ambush me and try to hurt me while i count all this cash with no one around all by myself...Hope no one's following me right now"
Real dumb

I've been enjoying it overall, but there are definitely some clunkers comedy wise. I do think they went a little internet meme heavy with their comedy, but it's nothing that breaks what's been a great game.
I think the funniest stuff about borderlands 2 is the stuff that they don't shove in your face. Things like you walk into sanctuary and you can see wanted posters of all the vault hunters and each one has a different price but then Salvadore has such a long list of things he is wanted for they taped another list to the bottom of his poster. Subtle stuff like that is a way better approach to comedy. They don't shove it in your face and hell if you didn't pay attention you could outright miss it but its funny.
That was easily one of the best things I've seen. And that he's worth $99,000,000,000.99.I think the funniest stuff about borderlands 2 is the stuff that they don't shove in your face. Yeah. It isn't very funny. I usually throw on a podcast when I play.
this is exactly what ive been doing for my second playthrough, the first time around though i will admit, Handsome Jack got REALLY annoying, but i dont play these games for the humor, just the co-op and guns :)

Another great example of how humor is contextual. I absolutely love that, especially how how he compared himself to his dead brother. His best quality over him being that he was not currently buried in a shallow grave.
Maybe it was the accent.
Didn't play the first Borderlands so I'm going into this pretty fresh. Humor has been fine imo. The "Bonerfart" and Butt Stallion" stuff is a little too juvenile for my tastes but I find Claptrap's dialogue to be pretty entertaining and I just did Lilith's missions and found much of her dialogue with the cult to be funny. I can see what Jeff says because most of the stuff that isn't funny has come from Handsome Jack and a lot of the entertaining stuff has been from sidemissions.
I totally disagree. Sure, the meme stuff can be annoying, but that stuff is almost always at the periphery(like the challenges, as you said), and I've laughed my ass off a couple of times. The Handsome Jack "Spoon" speech had me literally on the floor, for example.
*Sigh*, so they didn't realize half of the memes they used became unfunny long ago?
It looks awesome, and i'll probably still buy it, but damn.
It's hard to get a solid comedic script that derives from referential humor. Especially considering the internet digests memes in a matter of weeks nowadays. This game has, after all, been in development for three years.
My own observation is that the characters are quite poorly written and/or suffer from poorly directed voice actors. Does anyone remember General Knoxx's ECHO tapes? Now that made me laugh out loud. A brilliant way of dealing with what could very easily be a stereotypical gruff general-type.
I'm enjoying the humor so far, at least in a very off and on sort of way.
For instance, the 'your mom' joke in the beginning was straight up TERRIBLE. However, the Yugioh reference that Zer0 says is pretty good. After the tenth time it gets pretty old but that first time...man.
And, of course the more 'subtle' humor (i.e. 'use your eyeholes', the wanted posters, etc) is pretty good too. But, subtlety is not Borderlands 2's strong suit, so expecting some post-modern approach to humor is like eating an apple and complaining that it isn't a slice of pizza.

This thread is atrocious. I don't have Borderlands 2 and have no idea what you're talking about. You may as well be some old man yelling at a cloud. Next time think about adding some substance to your post. You know, like examples of what you're referring to.
Duder youre being a dick

There's room for dumb humor that isn't super lazy meme bullshit (see: saints row the third)
You're not fucking welcome here.
Some stuff is actually really great, like the mission where you destroy the furnaces to freeze the bandits out and all they do is put on winter hats, and some stuff is god fucking awful. I think it's the first game to make me think it's both incredibly brilliant and written by out-of-touch fucktards at the same time.
I have now decided the OP is at best a troll, and at worst paid by those who wish Borderlands to fail.
Why you may ask.
Because in a radio commercial a man explains he has lost both his thumbs to an unfortunate foreplay accident and cannot reload his weapons, or some such situation. He is assured by the Gun manufacturer's wife that he can still protect his wife and family from bandits rapists and murderers without his thumbs because reloading or some such is somehow fully auto. I loved the empathy and the caring that was exhibited. Sounds like the foreplay sucked though.
I have a lot of forgiveness in my heart for effort. And it wasn't really badly done.
I enjoy some of the humour. Not all of it, but some of it is pretty good. The main villain is quite funny. Some of the text is pretty good. Not all the jokes connect with me, but that's okay. Humour is subjective. I know people who like the humour in BL2. I know others who don't. Just like I know some who like Black Adder and some who don't. It's subjective.
If you don't like it, then that's how you feel. It's just one more thing you don't enjoy. Myself? I enjoy it quite a bit.
Contrary to how jeff feels about it. I find handsome jack to be pretty awesome and everytime he comes up on my echo i stop and listen as to not trigger something else that'll cut him off.
Hands down, the funniest thing i've heard in the game so far was from Handsome Jack telling a story about New Haven and the story itself and how he told it was hilarious but the ending where he presents you with the moral of the story is just gold
For some reason, when he comes on ur echo near the beginning of the game (around the time he gets the horse or whatever) he's talking while eating pretzels or chips or some shit and for some reason i found that incredible.
funny internet jokes bro!
they put jokes you KNOW youre supposed to laugh at rather than complicated new ones!
so ez
Dudebro 1:"Hey guys, lets get into another argument about subjective taste!"
Dudebro 2:"Sounds good bro, you start"
Dudebro 1: "BORDERLANDS 2 ISNT FUNNY"
Dudebro 2: "NUH UH! IT WAS THE FUNNIEST GAME SINCE MONKEY ISLAND"
Dudebro 1: "NUH UH YOU'RE WRONG!"
(ad infinitum)
There are some genuinely amazing humorous parts of this game, but yeah for the most part it's crappy internet memes and 12 year old toilet jokes.

The script and challenges read like a 12 year old who just discovered Know Your Meme
They have Anthony Bursch and Ashley Bursch.. for "narrative design" roles.. which usually means writing a bunch of jokes. Point is, yeah.. they funny (if you lobotomised or 12 year old)

I feel sorry for the people who seem to have some sort of bug in their copy of Borderlands 2 which causes them to be showered with memes every time they pull the trigger. I don't remember much of the dialog I've heard because it's generally drowned out by gunshots and explosions but, as far as I tell, the game seems to be full of "quirky" and "kooky" characters who are completely inoffensive and just about memorable enough that I know who to see about picking up or turning in quests.
Yesterday I was trying to be revived while a Goliath was yelling "I AM DISAPPOINT" during a mission where it kept bombarding me with just about every quote from Top Gun, ever...in a mission where I act out a scene from Top Gun, from a guy named after the singer of Danger Zone. I just wanted XP.
Based on what I played of the game, I feel that the awful meme jokes in the challenge titles are self-aware. When they put them in the game they weren't thinking "let's put these hilarious internet jokes in here guys", they were thinking "let's put these super played-out internet jokes in the most blatant way possible, so when people see it they are just forced to groan at how bad they are", that’s why those challenges are funny to me.
That said as I was playing the game today I shot a badass in the head and as he died he yelled "AAHHHH Pluto isn’t a planet !!!", and I just completed a side-quest based on the movie Top Gun, so I believe the humor in Borderlands 2 to be great.
Sir Hammerlock got fed up with trying to give Bullymongs a new name so he went "Screw it, Bonerfarts. I shall call them Bonerfarts."
Boner-farts. This game is hillllllllaaaaaaaarious :P
I agree that the majority of it sucks, but once in awhile it hits. Its not like I have a dry sense of humor or anything, as I find It's Always Sunny to be incredibly hilarious, which is low brow to most. It's just the craft of most of the stuff in BL2 is poor, and there is so much I just start to ignore it.

I don't mind the dumb sophmoric humor.
But that said; I'm really put off by how cavalier the game treats torture. They treat it like this amusing thing, like Three Stooges why-you-knucklehead comedy, instead of the most horrific and brutal thing a living being can ever suffer. The early Captain Flynt part... "At the sound of Heaton screaming for his life, it'll be 2:30" "WHY OH GOD WHY?!" "Next scheduled broadcast at 2:35" ... HAHAHA ISN'T IT FUNNY THAT SOMEONE IS BEING PUT THROUGH PERPETUAL MORTAL AGONY?! ISN'T IT FUCKING HYSTERICAL?! Every time it shows torture as this amusing aside (Dr. Zed repeatedly fucking with that strapped down patient) it makes me grind my teeth.
I've tried to have that discussion on these forums before, and nobody was having it, so best of luck. I agree that it's one thing to shoot dudes in the face and give them a quick demise, conforming to the Geneva Conventions and all that. Seeing a dude in continued pain should be handled a little differently.
Admittedly, my example was more fantastical. I thought some of the special death animations in Dead Space were excessive, especially ones where like Isaac gets his leg ripped off, then Isaac howls in horrific agony for like 5-10 seconds while the monster/boss takes its sweetass time winding up its arm for the fatal blow. I guess people let it go because it's a horror game, but I didn't like that the implication was supposed to be that I thought it was hilarious or badass or something. Hell, maybe it was supposed to be gruesome to discourage the player from dying.
Comparatively, the deaths in something like Resident Evil 4 were varied and gory, but at least they were quick and to the point.
Yeah, this game treads a weird line. People casually torturing and killing people (I mean, granted, you kill a shitload of people in the game....) but then there is stuff like the Tiny Tina quest which gets really dark really fast. Just a strange juxtaposition. Like, wait, I'm supposed to like this person and laugh at them, but they're a terrible person? So bizarre.
My opinion of the humor is that it just comes off as trying too hard. Some humor, dumb or not, seems effortless. This does not.
I take what I said back, I just had a side quest where Claptrap tells me he's hiding a stash very far away from where he currently is and that I have to go through several challenges to find it, then he listed like 5 CRAZY FUCKING THINGS to do, probably making fun of the likes of Skyrim.
Shoulda recorded that, was pretty damn hysterical and climatic!
Edit: Holy shit I turned around after talking to him and the stash was right there. FUCKING HILARIOUS!
Edit 2: Some dude on the street just said "God I wish I was a Vault Hunter.. When I shoot people in the face I just get sent to jail."
My next story mission is for the Wildlife Preservation place and I'm really enjoying the Handsome Jack dialogue. He's a bad guy that thinks he's the best thing ever and he constantly reminds you of how he thinks you suck. I thinks that's funny. I don't understand how people can ding the game for not liking him when he's not trying to be liked.

It doesn't bother me. Chuckled at a bandit shouting "I DON'T COME AND SHOOT YOU WHEN YOU'RE HAVING A TIME-OUT!"
Some of the Bandit dialogue is pretty funny, I'll admit. I always like it when one of them goes down with their last words as ''This is the last thing I'll ever say...'' Also Goliaths are always hilarious. I love that terrible animation of how they sort of float through the air to ground slam you.
