Custom Borderlands NERF Project

#1 Edited by Turbo_Toaster (982 posts) -

Top o' the mornin' to ye, Giant Bomb community! Long time no see.

I made these and I thought you all might appreciate them. I've been meaning to do this for a year and never had the motivation, until one day I just said, "Fuck it! Let's do this thang." and here we are! I experimented on the Nerf Raider first because it doesn't function that great, so if I screwed up who cares. Turns out I didn't! Anyway look!

Nerf Raider Before:

Raider After:

The finish is dry and smooth, took a lot of patience and light coats of Krylon Fusion. Clear coated to lock in freshness ;)

And then there was the MEGA MAGNUS. One of the most badass Blasters that Nerf makes. It fires MEGA darts.

I'm gonna do a buttload of these. If I forget to post them here, follow me on Instagram at @Turbo_Toaster and my twitter is still @TurboToaster.

Love you miss you GB Community. Till next time, keep fit and have fun!

- Kat

Edit: Finished making my listings!

Oh these are fan-fucking-tastic! You're a really talented painter! You did a really great job getting the Borderlands style on these things. Bravo!

PS, I would happily pay you for this service. I understand it's unfeasible, but I'm just throwing it out there ;)

Damn, that looks amazing, great job.

I have never seen real objects that look cell shaded. Its actually kinda freaky and my brain keeps telling me its a screenshot.

#5 Posted by TheHT (11984 posts) -

Those look spot-on! Well done.

#6 Edited by Turbo_Toaster (982 posts) -

Dude totally feasible! I don't want to turn this into some kind of garbage soft sell article but I am going to be selling them eventually on Etsy. It's releasing them into the wild that's the hardest part.

I'm super excited that the Magnus can be painted without having to disassemble it, so it works like a dream. My Raider...nadda so much, but she's still pretty. ;)

And thanks guys for the positive feedback!

Holy hell, these are amazing. Very nice work! I've thought about doing this for years, but lack every physical and mental aspect required to get it done. But've got some skill!

#8 Edited by Corevi (5810 posts) -

These look really cool. Kinda hate the Borderlands series after 2 but still a rad art style.

I would totally buy a Mass Effect nerf gun though.

#9 Posted by Turbo_Toaster (982 posts) -

I put this off for an entire year and I've never wanted to kick myself more. You can take the gun apart or like with the Magnus I just taped over the parts I didn't want to get paint into (screw holes, dart chamber, the crevice where the sliding piece moves). Sand it a bit, then roll with Krylon Fusion as it bonds well with plastic, and I seal them with Krylon Matte Finish clear coat.

Taking the tape off when the paint part is done is like Christmas morning! You'll be glad you did it. Let me know if you ever do one, I wanna see it!

#10 Posted by MachoFantastico (4914 posts) -

Wow, that looks awesome. I remember seeing a pellet gun customized to look like a Counter Strike gun a few months back.

The art style looks great duder.

Great work! I'm one of THOSE people that didn't see eye to eye with Borderlands 2, but these are super cool!

But also, dat mug. Dead or alive, you're coming with me...

These are very nice good.

Any plans to do a similar thing with the ammo? Like, make the darts look like Borderlands-y shotgun shells or something?

#13 Posted by Turbo_Toaster (982 posts) -

Nah, the darts are specific for the inner-workings. They'd probably jam the gun if I painted them.

#14 Posted by OneKillWonder_ (1869 posts) -

@turbo_toaster: Ha, there's like a thousand percent certainty that I'll never ever do one, but I'll be sure to let you know if that somehow changes!

It'd be easier if they just made Borderlands-branded Nerf guns in the first place...

#15 Edited by Turbo_Toaster (982 posts) -

I know eh! They're very close though save for not having any real stress effects. Like, the original paint job on the Magnus looks pretty decent by itself. The Elite series isn't half bad in terms of style. The Zombie Strike series is fucking crazy cool, mostly just the SledgeFire for my money. I mean just look at this guy!

I'm doing at least a couple of these when I make enough to buy them. For $30 each they're worth every penny.

#16 Posted by Quid_Pro_Bono (367 posts) -

@turbo_toaster: well you should definitely PM me a link to your etsy page when you're ready to start selling!

#17 Posted by Turbo_Toaster (982 posts) -

Just finished making the listings. I'll be adding more down the road because now this is a thing I do I guess!

Great stuff! Ever since I saw Volpin Props, these sorts of projects have always seemed super cool.

#20 Edited by Brodehouse (10246 posts) -

Holy shit. That's both amazing and awesome.

Your pistol custom, it looks like a yellow M-3 Predator with the trigger guard taken off.

Looks like I'll have to save up a hundred bucks or so.

#21 Posted by nasp (501 posts) - the borderlands games so its nice to see something like this.

#22 Posted by OldGuy (1576 posts) -

@turbo_toaster: Boy howdy those are pretty! Too bad the Raider is a pain to do 'cause it sure is spiffy.

Now I'm gonna go all pedantic... I thought (granted I haven't felt the need to pick up Borderlands or B2 in... a year and a half) that Hyperion guns sported more red than yellow - which I think is an S&S thing... though that just makes it more likely for me to get one of these since I never liked Hyperion guns.

I do kind of wish that there were some Nerf that looked close enough to Maliwan since a spiffy blue "cell shaded" gun would be sweet, but I don't see anything that wouldn't require a bunch of modding.

That's pretty rad looking!

#24 Posted by BaconGames (3607 posts) -

That's fucking cool.

She legitimately looked cel-shaded.

Pretty cool, I dare say they look more cel-shaded than this cosplayer I met at Megacon...

That looks fantastic Duder!!!

Good gravy, those are goddamn beautiful! I see we're a fan of the Borderlands 2-era Hyperion brand, too :P

#28 Posted by CharlesAlanRatliff (5469 posts) -

These look fantastic! That's a nice store you have there. I bet there are a lot of cosplayers that would love to show these off at a convention.

These are really cool, good job!

I've thought about trying to customize Nerf guns before but It seems super tough.

This seems like a good place to drop these cel shaded jeans:

New Guns Day!

Doublestrikes were 25% off so I bought one to muck around with. The yellowish panel glows bright green in the dark. It looks pretty sweet.

Friend of mine gave me a Swarmfire to work some magic on.

#36 Posted by MooseyMcMan (11490 posts) -

@turbo_toaster: You're like a wizard. A magical, gun painting wizard!

#37 Edited by psylah (2187 posts) -

Flawless work.

Nerf is my secret shame. I have a tub of pretty much every N-Strike hidden away in my closet.

I got a Slingfire early last month, since Amazon got in a limited number and sold them before street date. The performance is underwhelming, but it is a joy to handle.

I'm sure you'd love to paint one of them up.

#38 Posted by Turbo_Toaster (982 posts) -

Ha! My friend did the same thing, I saw it the other day and indeed I would love to get my hands on one. Looks so fun to use.

#39 Posted by Accolade (376 posts) -

These look great and would go well with those cell shaded jeans that girl made on that site.

#40 Posted by Grillbar (1937 posts) -

that looks amazing. nice work

@psylah no shame in it. mine is airsoft maybe we could combine it with my

Dipping into Fallout effects, this one is sort of a hybrid of Fallout and Borderlands. I shoulda just kept it strictly Fallout without the illustration effects but oh well!

I wanna see a sledge's shotgun.
