That's weird. The gun damage I posted was from a double-barrel dual-shot Shotgun I picked up. Does that mean there are only nine pieces of shot that eject from the gun at one pull of the trigger, each do 44 base damage?
Sorry if that sounds redundant, but sometimes I need to repeat what you just said to be able to understand it properly.

I honestly didn't know that they had Combat Rifles that were fully automatic. I thought it was strange that I had yet to see a Rifle that wasn't burst fire.
WOW. So I was looking around in New Haven today and found a chest I never seen before, the one that Claptrap opens for you. I found this SMG inside:
Maliwan, "TEK400 C Combustion HellFire", Level 43 DMG: 159 ACC: 90.5 FR: 3.6 Highly Effective vs. Flesh Chance to light enemies on fire "We don't need no water..." Very High elemental chance X4 Fire, 18 Bullets/clip
The thing is a beast. It's text is the darkest orange I've seen yet. Now I just have to go see what "We don't need no water..." means.
@eroticfishcake: Weird, because it's not explosive at all, it has Fire element in it... unless there is Fire AND Explosive! Which would be sweet! It does blow up when I shoot, but so did my other Fire weapon, a X4 Sniper... Hm.
With the Heavy Gunner class mod on my soldier I get three shots instead of the usual two. BAM! BAM! BAM!
I've also pumped up shotgun damage, and will soon pump up the clip size even further. Not much can stand up to three of those shots, let alone four. Muahahaha.
The machine pistol is absolutely perfect if I need to get in the face of a boss and deal high damage very quickly. I typically don't use this for smaller enemies because it eats up ammunition quickly. __________
In a furious rage and in the heat of the moment, I picked this bad boy off of the ground mid boss fight desperately seeking something quick and powerful - it got the job done and boosted me to the next level for which I could use my TMP9 Machine Pistol. I owe it all to this one for saving my ass. __________
I love this Revolver because it looks like a classic Western Magnum. It's quick to reload and has plenty of punch for if I'm down on ammunition for my other weapons.

@fastidious: I too have found a few unexpected guns in trash piles and such. I've gotten a level 40 orange, combustion hellfire smg out of a locker. And some of my best weapons out of skag piles. Weird.
Speaking of which, heres a purple revolver I found:
RV31 XX SAVAGE MASHER (best name ever) Level req: 35 Damage: 253 x 7 Accuracy 69.9 Fire Rate: 0.8
Like the revolver I posted before in that each shot breaks into 7, but a whole lot awesomer. Another interesting thing is that it blows skags away at close range. No, it literally makes them fly away. Crit one in the mouth and it goes about 50 feet.
I'm currently a level 26 Siren and I am still running around with this gun. I wish I could find a suitable replacement, but last night before going to sleep, I went and killed a bunch of similar level dudes to see if it was worth the storage slot and I mowed them down with it. I'll keep it for a while longer but, so far, it's been my favorite gun. I've kept it for many many levels now and it is the reason my pistol skill is the highest developed among my combat attributes. Side note: Mad Mel's gun is wicked sweet, too. RV300 C LIGHTNING REVOLVER (purple) Rips down shield bar in 1 or 2 shots leaving the 3rd for body damage. Level Requirement: 15 Damage: 80 Accuracy: 91.5 Fire Rate: 1.3 Ammo: 3 Effects: X3 Electrical Notes: Very Highly Effective Against Shields
Being a "Firefly" Siren my second favorite gun has been this sniper rifle. One shot and they usually burn to death before a second is needed. LB 40 INCENDIARY WRATH (purple) Level Requirement: 19 Damage: 175 Accuracy: 93.3 Fire Rate: 1.4 Ammo: 5 Effects: X2 Flame Notes: +12% Damage; 2.7x Weapon Zoom
With my set up it has a clip size of 102, which for a repeater pistol is huge. It's not too powerful, but if you empty the clip, you can pretty much take anything down.

This is seriously one of best guns I ever found. Even at level 38, its still my best gun. The massive DPS that it throws out combined with mental storm and overload is insane. I still haven't found a suitable weapon to replace it.
Well i am level50 playing as Mordecai and my best weps are req48's
1. Best SMG: HX4 Combustible Hellfire - Damage 137 - Accuracy 86.9 - FireRate 12.5 - "we don't need no water..." - Very High Elemental Effect Chance x4fire.
2. Best Rocket: RPG71 Mad Mongol (lol love that name) - Damage 997 but rocket splits in many so its shitload of damage - Accuracy 91.3 - FireRate 2.7 - "horde something i am not sure"
3. Best Magnum: Mal10 Pearl Chimera - Damage 499 - Accuracy 89.3 - FireRate 1.7 - "A Beast Of many Forms fire all elements" - x4 Explosive and it shoots all elements :) in over 100h of playing this game i got only one of those.
4. Best Sniper: Its a Purple 17 clip Automatic sniper with 578damage and 8.1 fire rate its fucking awesome to spray no scope lol called PPZ7 Liquid Penetrator.
also i got an SMG that was called Crimson Bitch lol best name ever.
I'm lilith lvl 50 and I have 2 favorites right now. I have found 10-ish orange weapons (and 1 dark orange one) and none even come close to comparing to these. Thanks to my proficiencies in shotguns and smgs being so damn high, I don't know their original level requirements, but I'll post what I see on my screen.
Alright, here are the best guns I have after finishing my first playthrough. Although I did find some interesting weapons, I didn't see a single orange in over 25 hours of gameplay.
I have been using the same assault rifle for over ten levels...I just can't find anything that is as good all-around. It has a reflex sight, slight zoom, and fires in three round bursts. Due to my nice combat rifles bonuses, I can usually get all three rounds right into a badasses' head: AR Battle Stomper - Requires Level 25 Damage 133 Accuracy 87 Fire Rate 15 +33% Recoil Reduction +70% Damage 2.0x Zoom
I did find a very fun and powerful repeater pistol towards the end of my first game. It's essentially a submachine gun. It's a great in between weapon when enemies are a bit too far away for the shotgun. TMP8 Cold Torment - Requires Level 31 Damage 145 Accuracy 92.8 Fire Rate 10.0 +23 Magazine Size (Total of 39) 3.1x Zoom (No scope) +58% Recoil Reduction
Finally, here's the shotgun I used from level 27 until I finished the playthrough at 35. It one-shots most enemies in the game. SPR40 Terible Matador - Requires Level 28 Damage 86x12 Accuracy 11.7 Fire Rate 1.1 +45% Damage +34% Fire Rate +3 Projectiles Fired

Its not that good =P You get it off a boss in the game so its not rare either. By the time I got it, it was already way weaker than what I was using, it has high damage but its super slow and the clip takes forever to recharge, also it makes you walk slower when you have it out. It looks super cool though, and its the first eridian weapon you will probably find.
I have found one other eridian weapon, its a shotgun that shoots lightning, and makes the sound of thunder when you shoot, its also nifty because the lightning pellets bounce off things and fly around. its called the 101 cannon or something like that, its pretty neat.
OK! So I have been using a level 29 pistol with 139 x7 damage, so each bullet is 7 small bullets that do 139 each, which does insane damage at close range! Its also got fast reload. I was able to do 9700 dmg crit on one of those crabworms thanks to their super weakness. I was also doing around 6000 dmg a shot to the rakk hive boss, which made it incredibly easy.
I also found a combat rifle at level 16, its blue rarity with 116 damage or so, +112% damage, 48 ammo clip, fully automatic, fast fire rate, scoped awesomeness. I ended up using it all the way up to the end of my first playthrough because it was way better than anything else I found. Its still decent in my second playthrough so far, but its starting to take almost an entire clip to kill an enemy, so I have stopped using it. but damn, its level 16!
@MoTheHawk: Man, I still haven't found a weapon that has infinite ammo. I'm jealous. Then again...at this point, I have so much money and pick up so much ammo from everything I kill, it's hardly a concern. I just top off all of my ammo whenever I see a vendor.
Do you think you're going to dump that thing when you find an SMG that does more damage?

Did you finish the game? One of the Crimson Lance Badass guys always drops (or at least did in both my playthroughs) an eridian rifle that shoots a slow-moving energy ball, and has infinite ammo. I believe all Eridian weapons are infinite ammo. Of course, you could also just get a class mod that recharges ammo: I have one, and I can't fire fast enough to ever run out of ammo with any gun.
@MB: Yeah probably, especially since I picked that one up as my Hunter who's better off using weapons other than SMGs. And the regenerating ammo and reload speed are nice, but I constantly find myself playing with Soldiers that have the ammo regen class mod equipped, so it's kind of a wash.
