The fifth game in the Breath of Fire series. It is a... major departure from the series' roots, to say the least.

Overview

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter is an RPG game developed by Capcom, and released exclusively on the PlayStation 2 in 2002. It is the fifth installment in the Breath of Fire series.

The game is noted for strongly deviating from its more popular predecessors; having been set in a different world, and featuring a number of questionable new gameplay mechanics, such as a confusing new battle system and a meter that filled up slightly every time you used an ability that would end the game once full. Although critics gave generally positive scores to the game, many fans were not so accepting of the game that brought an unfortunate end to the Breath of Fire series.

Story

The surface of the world is desolate and barren, humanity flees underground to survive. Society is at crisis point, a huge class divide develops, with the rich able to afford to move to higher areas, away from pollution, whereas the poor are forced to live in squalor. The game follows protagonist Ryu, a low level citizen, as he endeavors to save the life of his friend Nina, who, following experimental surgery, is unable to survive underground. To save Nina's life Ryu must rebel against the tyrannical government and escape to the surface of the world.

Unique Features

The game featured many new gameplay elements that further illustrated it's deviation from previous Breath of Fire games.

D-Counter

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter was unique in that it restricted the key protagonist, Ryu, to only one dragon form. The Dragon Counter limits the use of this dragon form with the use of a timer, that slowly goes up to 100%. You gain percentage for walking around and engaging in battles, while the devastating attack D-Breath raises a huge amount of percentage. Use of Dragon abilities allows Ryu to unleash fast and powerful attacks, that can kill incredibly strong enemies in a single blow.  If you reach 100% before a certain point in the game, the dragon form takes over Ryu's body and he will die. It is therefore important to greatly restrict use of Dragon abilities in order to ensure that you can progress through the game.

D-Ratio

A rank that can be increased throughout playing the game. It ranges from 1/8192 to the highest rank of 1/4. People with higher D-Ratios are wealthier and more powerful, as well as having access to new areas that cannot be explored when you play through the game for the first time. The D-Ratio greatly increases the replayability factor, as you must play through the game multiple times to achieve the highest possible rank.

Scenario Overlay

Scenario Overlay (SOL), is another method instigated by the developers to increase the game's replayability. Whenever you lose a battle, or your D-Counter timer reaches 100%, you are given the option to make use of SOL. It allows new hidden areas to be unlocked, and can allow characters to become more poweful, simply by visiting previous points in the game, or by restarting or replaying the game. It is impossible to complete the game on the first run, so restarting the game allows you to defeat especially powerful bosses for example. The SOL would later inexplicably be reused in the Xbox 360 game, Dead Rising.
