Oh Bethesda, I am sad you have your name on this, and I love you. Well at least I did. I was looking forward to Brink coming out. The game premise seems fun. But seeing some gameplay footage, it was plainly clear that it's a serious sausage fest. So I look up some info on this, and as it turns out, nope you can't play a female, because apparently making women in a game is too hard. However, they sure can make some dudes that look like Easter Island statues. Great job!

A lot of games are apparently anti-female, which is a shame because I like having female characters (typically their body mass is slightly smaller than their male counterparts; meaning it gives me a bit more of a edge in dodging shit).

Sims 3 is anti-male.

She has a point.  It's meant to be game where you can create characters with the purpose of playing them online.  To not have any female build capability is insulting when games have a much broader demographic break these days.  Shame on Splash Damage.

#9 Posted by pause422 (6249 posts) -

There are so many games where you can't play as a female character, why make it sound like a negative for one over all others? Almost every shooter ever.

#10 Posted by SeriouslyNow (8534 posts) -

As true as that is Brink sets a pretty bad precedent for Bethesda who have always had a female character build in their own games.  I suppose they could say that this is balanced out by Wet only having a female lead.  Still, I can see why this would be annoying for some people.

#11 Edited by Coombs (3449 posts) -

I'll give you that it is a little insulting, But it's not Anti-Female.
RapeLay, Rumble Roses, Ect, Ect... are Anti-female (to different degrees)
But really the reason is pretty simple, For years now their primary demographic has been male (By a large margin)
It's only in recent years that there has really been a large surge in female players, And some devs haven't yet realized the potential of this market. And continue to pump out action games for the boys, leaving the "Barbie" games to other devs. Not even realizing that they are slowly alienating this new and growing market.  But be sure it won't be long before they realize, What alot of devs already have.

They obviously also haven't seen a human male to model either. Those things must be what space aliens think of humans after seeing apes.

Isn't the game being developed by a different studio? How is bethesda to blame when they are only publishing it? I think the blame is primarily for the devs and Bethesda is ok. Besides, like everyone said, female characters in games tend to have thin bodies making multiplayer unbalanced.

I'll never get to play as an anamorphic animal who jacks people's cars.  Also I'll never be able to run around as a fox man in Brink, how sad.

Brink is pro a specific kind of female. The kind with peni.

I'm just gonna post what went through my mind when I read the title. And that was: "I seriously doubt it.". Just because a game doesn't include something doesn't mean it is against it.

Gun to breast ratio, that is effing clever :D

No wonder why women are the weaker sex, they've got YOU on their team! No team player are we, eh? Oh no!

I can sort of see what you mean though, those are some mean chins those gentlemen are packing. Walkin' around deflecting bullets and kettles. Oh my.

#43 Posted by ZombieKitty (103 posts) -
@JJWeatherman: Well, they personally said it was too much time and energy  making female characters. but apparently it's super easy to make mutant male characters, to me that says: Hey, eff off females, go back to the kitchen and cook :D Which is funny because cake is delicious.
#44 Posted by Gamer_152 (14113 posts) -

In this day and age it does feel a bit restrictive when you can't play a female character in a game with character creation, however I think "restrictive" is really as strong a criticism as you can apply to something like this. As people have said above there are plenty of games which feature few to no females, that's by no means evidence to say that these games have anything against females.

Heh, that's funny-- that would be awesome, instead of the riot shield in COD:MW2 you just have some cast iron skillets, and instead of any weapon, or coarse a rolling pin to cause some blunt force trauma. I'm not gonna lie, I would probably play that.
#49 Posted by IcySandman (474 posts) -

I'd say the biggest reasons that you aren't going to see many female characters in game are because:
1.)Woman have generally never been allowed in the army until now, even now they can't go into the frontlines because of random shit..
2.)People are always getting offended, they might make the character look bad in someway or something.
3.) I don't really care if they give character that are customizable (Male/female) and look different in an online shooter, I'm still going to shoot them.

I'm not gonna lie either. That sounds awesome to me. On topic though, if you want a game brimming with misogyny then I look towards Postal 2 and RapeLay. A lot of people have mentioned "anti-female" games but those two take the trophy in terms of mistreatment towards women. They're pretty terrible games anyway so either way they're going to sink to the murky depths of gamimg.
