A touching storyline combined with a unique controller scheme makes Brothers well worth checking out
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons by Swedish development studio Starbreeze Studios and published by 505 Games is a touching story of two brothers who are on a quest to save their sick father.
In the introductory montage it's revealed that the younger brother carries the burden of grief by watching their mother die in a boating accident while not being able to save; the older who seems like the stronger sibling provides as the constant throughout the 2 hour experience.
Retailing at $15 on Steam (managed to pick it up for $7.49), the unique dual stick control scheme is refreshing. Controlling the older brother with the left stick and the younger with the right isn’t as difficult as it seems and with only the left and right trigger buttons at your disposal gameplay feels intuitive and smart by throwing platforming puzzles at you that require both brothers to be controlled at the same time.
Running on the Unreal Engine, the art style of Brothers is amazing with some truly breathtaking vistas and gorgeous scenery. Along with an amazing art style, the storytelling is unique in that throughout the game not a single subtitle or vocal line is delivered, rather the games inhabitants speak in a language to “Simlish” but the story beats aren’t missed.
Though Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is a short time investment, the story itself isn’t without it’s twists and turns and leaves you with a bittersweet resolve that is something that can only be experienced.
Lovers of cult classics Journey and Bastion will thoroughly enjoy this game and those who are looking for more of an emotional experience will adore it.
This personally is in my top 5 games of 2013.
