"Most of the story missions are real-time strategy battles that find you commanding troops on a battlefield"
"although the laughs do taper off as you work your way through the game"
"It's a little short, side quests are repetitive..."
"The Legend is a little on the short side"

Just in case you guys skipped the review text and went straight to the score.

it's been said that despite minor nitpicks brutal legend is fantastic from start to finish (mix of an adventure game, beat'em up, hack 'n' slash, shoot 'em up and strategy).
getting it over uncharted 2, I want something fresh.
so glad it turned out great, after 4 years in the making it's finally here!

Jeez, kinda unfortunate the review said it was a little on the short side, for a 4 year development cycle.

That's not the case at all. The reason I only quoted the negative things is because it got a great score, and people need to be prepared for it's shortcomings also. People have to tendency to see a high score and skip the text of a review. If it had received a lower score, I would have quoted more of the positives.

Maybe, but my objective was to warn people about things you might have missed. Everyone even remotely interested in the game know that the voice work is great, the graphics are interesting, and the music is cool. What I wanted to let people know, who may just look at the score, is that the main story plays as an RTS, the side quests are repetitive, and the game is short.  I have no personal stake in the success of this game.

As much as I'm hyped for Brutal Legend I've heard some iffy things from people that got it early, and this is an IGN review and an exclusive review even.  I got the game preordered and I wouldn't be surprised if it already shipped.  I saw some streaming video and it definitely looks like it'll at least be worth it for the music & some laughs.  Seems like it might be a repetitive game though.

What really put me off the game was the fact it was an RTS.I'd really like to see a quick look of game 4 hours in.  I can't put money down unless I know what mid to end game is.

it's not a typical strategy game, I wish people weren't jumping to conclusions so quickly.
from what I've seen - yes, there are rts elements,  you make some of the units but you go all together at your enemy and you hack'n slash 'em/ use guitar solos to fight them.
there is a mix of adventure, shooting, racing here - everything blends nicely.
and tons of collectibles if you're a platformer enthusiast.

The AU review was MUCH better than the US one, so I suggest everyone read that instead.

Outside of that, the only parts that are RTS battles are the story missions but as the AU review pointed out (which the US reviews inverseley failed to mention) was that you DON'T have to play these missions as an RTS as you can just take Eddie Riggs and fight with him in the midst of the battles having to do very little micromanaging.

Either way I'm definitely getting this game as all the reviews for it have been ultra positive.

The part where it says it's short... And its focus as an RTS.

    Made my fears come true.

    My biggest gripe, its short.

With limited money and other games out there with longer single player experiences (uncharted 2, batman) my hype for this game just got knocked down a peg.

I look forward to the GB review.

T hey really need to abandon their 100 point system, 90% of their review scores are a multiple of .5, they should change to a 20 point scale.

it's a bit weird.  they said it.

Tim Schafer himself said it will take about 15 hours to get through storyline without side-quests, collecting so longevity is definitely lasting.
+ multiplayer sounds like has tons of replay value.

I don't see the appeal. Then again, I hate metal and I'm not a huge fan of Tim Schafer's style.

Meh, this game doesnt seem like such a must have.  I did enjoy the opening sequence in the demo because i hate these new metal bands and gay emo kids.  But the gameplay just doesnt speak to me and its overall replayability is a big concern.

    More reviews are up:

    MEGamers: 9.2/10 -

There are very, very few games which truly make me sit back and go “wow”. Among the slew of games that I’ve reviewed this year, there are only a couple that I really enjoyed playing, and continue to do so. Brutal Legend is one such game.

    VideoGamer: 8/10
It's undoubtedly a fun game, packed full with humour (although this does tail off towards the end), metal references, amazing encounters and memorable characters. It's the RTS sections that really let the game down for me, feeling like a good idea that hasn't quite been implemented well enough to gel with the rest of the game.

    Eurogamer: 8/10

Schafer, Double Fine, and Black haven't just created a story about roadies: they've become them, scuttling about energetically, heads down and minds focused, as they pull a handful of simple props together in order to put on an amazing show.

Yeah, it's short, took me about 6 hours. The game is definately well made, but all the gameplay mechanics are so rudimentary, that I felt like playing a game for 3 year olds, the music is ok though (I'm not into metal at all), open world kinda fails, because there are standart plain/desert/mountains terrain with slight metal cover touch, I was expecting more on that side. Ok game, but definately not "one of the best i've ever played". Oh, and funny part ends with an opening scene.

Not funny. Not a single giggle or a smile during my playthrough. Those types of "humour attemts" are more suitable for 3D cartoons. But maybe it's just me and my imageboard-twisted sense of humour.

that reviewer in the video is so boring. but this game still looks good and the review pretty much confirms what i expected the game to be.

@MB: Yeah, that "advertisement" had me scratching my head wondering  what they were aiming for.

I must admit, it is a little disconcerting to have only one outlet's review up when I can walk into Wal-Mart right now and buy it. The review seemed really shallow to me as well. For a game that was built from the ground up as a multiplayer game, having one (short) paragraph in the written review and two sentences in the video review mentioning this feature makes me question it's offerings. Even what is mentioned in both reviews is best described as a summary and falls far short of any sort of critique. Where are the other reviews?

Huh? Pretty much all the hype (not just from the media, but how it was pimped by the developers and publishers also) and official trailers were for the single player, story driven portion, the multiplayer only got attention as another bullet point very recently. It's never touted as a primarily multiplayer game, only as a story driven action adventure with various gameplay elements and Jack Black.
